This and 7 are good intros yes.

I'd say no since it is a throwback to the older ones and the first 3 hours or so, most likely longer since you're new, suck balls.

Still one of my favourite games though but it's definitely a slog through the first 3 hours or so

this game references and pays tribute to the older games so much, you're enjoy it more if you played the older games first

I played the game at release and never played any of the titles before 7. It's a good game fuck the references.

First one I played to completion, and I loved it.

I bought the switch version, the combat system is a huuuuuge turn off for me. Am i alone? Should I give it another shot?

It's one of the worst unless you are 5 years old. Play an A or B tier. S tier FFs require cultivated taste.

Attached: FF Tiers.jpg (1450x1550, 411K)

What's wrong with it?
Also where are you?

Holy shit, do you sniff your own fucking farts?

I’m inside the castle area in the very beginning of the game, I just saw Steiner for the first time. I guess I perfer turn based combat to the current combat system is all

It is turn based.

Like most turn-based games, I just thought the combat was a means to an end to experience the world and story. Fun at times, but a chore when you're just trying to explore.

Does the Switch still have the option for cheats like maxing out money and abilities? You can probably brute-force it if you're interested in it beyond the actual gameplay.

Attached: 1497482667668.png (294x265, 131K)

It... is turn based?
The fight at the very start is how the system works.
Anyway play it until you beat the plant cage in the forest and then go to the worldmap and see if you can handle it. Get to Lindblum if you can hold out and then decide after the monster hunting festival if you want to drop it or not

It's not turn-based. FFI-III and X are turn-based.

Is this bait? In what way is it not turn based. It has an ATB bar same as X.

No, the first 10 hours have maybe 30 minutes of gameplay while the rest is just running from point A to B then back to A.

yeah it will definatly teach you the basics and patients.

7 and 10 are the only worthwhile games

ATB is not turn-based. Do you know what the A means? X is CTB, not ATB, which is turn-based, the first and last mainline FF since III to be turn-based.

>slog
cant say I agree. especially with the black waltz

look at this guy

I'm so confused...
finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Battle_system

Are you complaining because ATB lets you modify your turns?
Because user...
finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Stop_(ability)

It's a slog in that there's a very odd divide between the action and story until Lindblum - outside of Waltz it's kinda like whatever happens nobody cares

only fags and girls like X

X does not have an ATB bar
Your turns are pre determined based on speed and some abilities modify the speed your next turns around
ATB is when a bar has to be filled for you to act
FFX-2 is ATB

I assume they are pretending it's not turn based because time continues going if you're in the main battle menu rather than submenus.

Start with 6 or 7

>It's a slog in that there's a very odd divide between the action and story until Lindblum - outside of Waltz it's kinda like whatever happens nobody cares
I disagree I feel it kept you paying attention instead of having a bunch of dialogue. I mean it's a game so you should be playing it.

iirc you can set the bar to "wait" when your turn comes up, or at least when you are in a menu, giving you time to think about your next action

So when you summon a monster and your turn isn't taken?
Or when you swap characters

OR the fucking fact you can fucking modify how turns work?
All the fucking games are turn based

Or the definition of turn based is something other than turn based apparently

Really?
I felt like after the forest it was sort of "oh we should hurry up but like... nobody cares if we don't"

>ACKCHYUALLY

Attached: 471863.jpg (350x250, 21K)

>Do you know what the A means?
and do you know what TB means?

I'm honestly really confused.
So the argument is: ATB isn't turn based since you can modify what orders the turns go in.
Okay, I can understand that part.

But then you have shit like paralyze which is in FF1 and skips over turns. So the turn order is modified

>Really?
>I felt like after the forest it was sort of "oh we should hurry up but like... nobody cares if we don't"
you can blame Stiener and Zidane being at odds for that. That's the dynamic you are supposed to be looking at here. Zidane was the guy who takes what he can get and goes with the flow. Stiener was the soldier Now Now Now guy.
It really makes for good character to character dialogue that makes Vivi and Garnet to be the back seat drivers of the story by keeping them focused.
Plus Zidane knows Garnet and ViVi never seen a village like that, I can tell Zidane wanted them to see the sights.

Time Batlle for ATB
Turn-based Battle for CTB
See where you're retarded?
In turn-based battles, you take turns. If you do nothing, nothing happens.
In active time battles, you don't take turns. If you do nothing, your enemy still takes action.

ATB is like a timer that you can shorten.
Where as actual turn base games they literally take turns.

I love IX and it was my first Final Fantasy.

I'd say it depends on if you like replaying games, though. If you replay IX after going through the previous VIII games, you can appreciate the references and callbacks more.

If it's a one and done deal, then no, I wouldn't start with it.

>this whole chart

Dear God.

The problem I have is that the story stagnates massively.
Steiner is still "gotta be loyal to her and nice but please return!", Garnet genuinely doesn't care and ignores him. Vivi is just a lost kid. Zidane just wants to annoy Steiner and doesn't care either.

All in all it's "eh, whatever if we go back or not"

So the argument is... a turn system where you can modify who takes the turn isn't turn based at all!
Turn-based battles started in FF1
Right, I get it - so I can say, paralyze 2 enemies in FF1 and they can't get turns thus modifying the turn order so it's not turn-based as you said

But you just said early that FF1 started the turn-based system

What a dumb argument. Some actions occurring under certain battle conditions, even if there is no player input, doesn't make it "non-turn based", at least in the context of what "turn bsaed" means to most people playing final fantasy.

What was the story of this game? It was so confusing

>The problem I have is that the story stagnates massively.
>Steiner is still "gotta be loyal to her and nice but please return!", Garnet genuinely doesn't care and ignores him. Vivi is just a lost kid. Zidane just wants to annoy Steiner and doesn't care either.
>All in all it's "eh, whatever if we go back or not"
I see what the problem is, you feel the escape from the castle slows down and feels wierd after the forest. I get that but look at it this way, the reason they stop at that town in particular is to show how Alexandria is getting ready for war. This was part of the adventure. Like stumbling on a mystery.
Garnet does care but she isnt the type to voice her opinion out loud because she didnt want to tell Zidane and Stiener that Alexandria is planning for war.
Vivi is just along for the ride, you cant really tell the kid to fuck off after he helped save the princess. Plus the village was to tie vivi into the story.

I'm sure this guy has his Active Time Battle set to Active instead of Wait which is why he feels like it's not turn based and enemies can take turns whenever they want

>FF2 anywhere but D tier or even an E tier
Opinion discarded you hipster fuck. FF2 is generally considered the worst in the franchise for a reason and anyone who thinks otherwise is only saying so to be a contrarian. Besides all the ridiculous problems with the leveling, magic, and combat system the dungeons are absolutely fucking atrocious. I would take FF13's hallways over the shitfest that is that games dungeons any day. That being said I don't think FF2 is a bad game especially considering the time and platform it came out on. I don't think any of the mainline games are bad but FF2 is easily one of the weakest if not the weakest game in the entire franchise.

I am not the user before, but basically one system is ATB where you can shorten or lengthen the timer on attacks or on your attacker.
The other one simply makes them skip a turn if they are slowed or what have you.

I don't think it slows down. I just think 3 out of 4 characters genuinely have no ambition
Outside of the first two, every character had a clear personality right out of the gate.
I think my problem is that it does the tutorial section way, way too long.

For me, the tutorial should have ended after the Black Waltz fight and instead it felt like until Lindblum, I was still being heavily railroaded to carefully make sure I hit the plot triggers as needed

In FFIX even wait won't prevent actions if you are in the "main" attack / magic / skill etc menu. You need to be in one of those submenus for the turns to pause.

Literally Dragonball, Monkey tail and all.

oh the motivation.
well Zidane is on the job and really has the hots for Garnet.
Garnet being a princess trapped in the castle seeing a village for the first time is intriguing and cant go much further with out a ride.
Vivi is there because he has no where to go until he finds out about the black mages. Mind you all 3 of them know getting to lindblum is going to take a journey and couldnt really go any further with put an air ship. so why not take in the sites?

Just finished replaying FF8 since forever, and while i appreciate the story a little bit more, the presentation is soooo badly done. The dialogue between characters is so fucking weird, like it was put through a computer and this is what it came up with.

no it wasnt

story is your basic fairy tale but you have Japanese influence like the boy with a monkey tail.
It's pretty much about war and using the summons like Nukes on other kingdoms.
Only to find out it's more than that and ends up being about the Cycle of Life and Death.

that's one of the major problems with Ff8. Every one acts like a robot except squall. Like everyone takes squalls dickheadedness with out blinking. While the rest of the cast was 2 dimensional it hurt.

to add to this you seem to have an affinity with Steiner more so it makes sense why you wouldnt really take in the others motivations much further.

Do not listen to this fan base, it's terrible. Just start with what seems the most interesting to you.

it definitely felt like it had a dragonball feel but the aesthetics were waaay too different

Attached: c144e68a0383fc3f15d8bc4a89d949a4.jpg (394x586, 59K)

ATB id when physical time has to pass for you to be able to act as opposed to "your speed is 15 you attack before the goblin but the white mage comes after because their speed is 8"
Enemies will continue to act if you sit idle on the base menu even in wait mode in ATB games
In turn based they arent allowed to do anything until you do

Yeah, it's great. The mechanics are very simple and it's just overall a really fucking good game.

This better be bait.

I remember liking the early parts in the city, haven't played it since release though.

What's your favorite FF?

>mfw ffix invented ssj4 before GT

Attached: F9iB0v5.jpg (400x300, 18K)

Just to be clear I was calling the fan base terrible, not IX.

GT ended in 97 user

shit I remembered ffix being older

Attached: 1389721497587.png (640x360, 183K)

ah much better

It's my favourite but I wouldn't recommend it as an introduction. IX benefits a lot from familiarity with the series. Go VII or X.

This had to be bait

Attached: image.png.083df8ab85a3486c69ffca0c22264a71.png (433x759, 481K)

Fair enough.

the only things I can seem to agree with are FF13 and FF15 being at the bottom

you just gave him the opposite reason to not play 9

Those little homages are really fucking irrelevant.

isnt that the point of Homage it's just to make a refrences that's all.

Attached: Cattura12.png (982x559, 667K)

>Literally Dragonball, Monkey tail and all.
That's like saying that MuvLuv alternative is literally Mars of Destruction

they're all shit

you have to be a literal child in the 90s to find any of these games enjoyable

Great first disc, passable second, then 20 hours of fucking nothing before an abortion of an ending.

8/10 ok I gues.

start with 15

It's a good FF game but why were the female soldiers bare assed?

Attached: alexandrian_soldier.png (811x346, 271K)

Why wouldn't they be?

>S-Tier

>10
>8

Troll or huge faggot. Either way into the trash it goes!

it was that or look like dump tea kettles.

>X. Worthwhile.

>hurr but you won’t get the references

Attached: DCE5CAC8-4D22-4787-9967-8E50F927717E.gif (800x800, 230K)

I think maybe he meant 'S Tier' for 'Shit Tier'

because alexandrians are men of culture

Attached: ooh_soft.jpg (875x914, 199K)

2 is great fuck you

so soft

!!! Hey!!!

you dont have to lie here user.

zidane knows what’s good

Attached: 3724DE7A-0DB5-4AF0-A9A8-E99EAA5118FA.jpg (206x123, 14K)

Which is a shame since Steiner gets some good ass development and character moments in the first half of disc 2, then falls to the wayside. At least he gets to bang Beatrix

I wouldnt say that. I mean he has great development through out the disc 1 and 2. the only issue is once Eiko comes a long she takes up a lot of the players attention.

Because reference to early Final Fantasies (mostly Celes).

I would go with very good. It's the only Final Fantasy where there's no dismay in battle and everything is joyous. You hit them? Great! You cast a spell on them? Great! They hit you? Great! They kill you? Great!
