What's the consensus on videogames causing addiction? The world seems very split on this right now. Many former gamers have fixed their lives by dropping vidya, but most scientists say they're excellent for your brain - as good as reading in some cases.

Obviously doesn't cause physical addiction, the only directly harmful kind of addiction.

>vidya is good for your brain
sauce?

I'm ashamed to admit that I blow cartridges for the money I need to buy UMDs that I can grind up and inject directly into my scrotum.

So would you say it's a compulsion?

i mean i guess it's just like saying drinking wine occasionally is good for you but don't go fucking overboard with it

What exactly defines addiction?
Is it the dropping of more conventional, perhaps essential life tasks for the subject one may be addicted to? Or is it moreso that, but it is also an active detriment to the person's own life?
Let's consider that a wealthy person decides to play Vidya for the rest of his life & not much else, using the funds he either has earned or was given at birth to do so. Vidya isn't really detrimental to his means of survival anymore, so is it an addiction? Is this unconventional choice of life enough to be defined as an illness?

Drinking wine is not good for you in any amount you gullible fuck.

Science disagrees. Between a random shithead user and the entire corpus of human knowledge, I know whom I'm going to trust. Fucking clown.

I've realized I don't have a video game addiction, I have a "literally anything that isn't the thing I need to get done" addiction

I don't think videogames, themselves, are the cause of the addiction.

For people who truly have a problem with this it is because they are using videogames as an outlet for other issues.
Videogames, and their accessory communities, are a good way to socially isolate yourself without actually "feeling" to isolated. It is a safety blanket that means you never have to risk much.

If you took videogames away from these people they will just find another outlet for their stagnation.

I always thought game addiction was bullshit but people I literally know have turned into husks of humans and play for 18 hours a day.

I love games more than anything, but I've generally had my fill after a couple of hours, except last weekend where I spent all day at the arcade.

(Sound Voltex V just came out, and we got the Luigis Mansion and House of the Dead Scarlett Dawn cabs. Amazing spectacle games.)

I just assumed it was a "listen you old fucker you watch Netflix all day why are you so assmad I play games for 3 hours" deal but after watching real people fall apart I'm fine with admitting it's a issue.

I'd very happily drop my video game addiction if I could replace it with literally anything else.
I don't play games because I'm addicted, I play games because I have nothing better to do.

Retard.

The "issue" is wider than videogames and that's why its bullshit.
People are trying to target videogames because they want an instant-solve for the problem. Say vidya causes addiction? Bam problem solved.

Nope, not how any of that works.

Mong.

You could try learning a skill user

literally the same as any kind of addiction. a game is designed to reward you in a specific way and you get dopamine release. certainly there isn't a chemical dependency but because there isn't a chemical dependency you can deny that habit and replace it with a more productive one.
but games are comfy and don't cost any money when you pirate them

It depends on each individual. Some people get addicted to eating glass. Games will be addicting to some people, and they won't be to others.

drinking wine is good for you, but the amount before it stops being good for you is a very small amount. your grandparents drinking a glass of wine a day is not really that healthy.

Just get a job.once you realize what your time is worth you'll start putting off Vidya for more productive things or at the very least for time to rest.

>participating in the rat race
No thanks.
