Level design would be fucking trash. Even if it was an open landscape but the story missions were instanced away into actual good level design, the net gain would be in the negatives because of all the shitty travel and padding. They already make 20-25 hour long games without being open world.

I think the combat would take a hit for needing to work in much wider spaces, where if you just copy paste DaS3 you would just kite like madness. The best possible scenario for this game is a brand new combat system with new movement to make archery and magic better. Something like Dogma, but magic in that game tends to be immobile.

It's one of those series that was pushed as being "mature" for "mature" readers such as myself while also being "nerdy" enough that normie thots could tell people how nerdy they were for having read a mediocre fantasy book. It also has lots and lots of sex for no particular reason so bitches love it.
It's basically a fantasy soap opera.

I honestly think the books are pretty great, infinitely endless wait for the next book aside.

The TV version is what struck mainstream attention though, inevitably putting all of their eggs into the violent shock value and sex appeal side of things.

Do you have better series to recommend then? Whenever I look for anything character focused in fantasy it's either about a bland self-insert archetype protagonist, or a gratingly painful Mary Sue like Kvothe or Locke Lamora.

The entire genre is pretty devoid of interesting modern content. Sanderson is the best currently active writer, but that's not a compliment, Sanderson is awful.
Check out The Red Queen by Alec Hutson, it's one of the better self published works. It's archetypal, but Hutson decided to take inspiration more from Robert Howard than Tolkien, and it goes in a pretty fun direction.
There's also Wheel of Time, which while basically being an 80's shonen anime, manages to be a fantastic ride for all of its flaws.
The Farseer trilogy and its sequel are pretty good if you can handle tragedies. There's actually 3 trilogies in the series, but the third one is awful.
The Codex Alera series is also an entertaining ride if you're willing to put up with a wacky premise. Someone bet Jim Butcher he couldn't write a book about Roman Legionaires with Pokemon, so he basically said "hold my beer" and wrote 6.

I started reading GoT, got about halfway through, and the writing itself is great. He has talent. But the plot and the characters are dull and stupid. He goes for 'shades of grey' morality, but you can't have moral ambiguity when the first thing a character does is try to murder a child to hide incest. That's a ridiculous caricature of a villain. And Ned Stark is the most irritatingly useless protagonist ever. He does literally nothing for the whole story, hell the whole reason he gets involved in shit was to find out how his friend died, which has nothing to do with the plot. Same with the dwarf. We're told the dwarf is cunning but we never see it happen. He doesn't do anything. Nobody does anything important. Characters get killed off willy-nilly for the sake of cheap drama, but the end result is that you don't get attached to any of the characters and you don't give a damn about what any of them are doing.

The quality of his writing takes a dramatic dive after the first book. The first book wasn't meant to be fantasy, it was meant to be stand alone historical fiction based on the War of Roses, but his editor and publishers shot it down because nobody buys Historical fiction. He re-wrote it as a Fantasy series, and took the map and literally just turned it upside down changed names. The big wall is literally just Hadrians wall.

Why? Everyone I've talked to says he's one of the best characters and becomes very likable. I don't see how that's possible. He tried to murder a child. It wasn't like he was forced to either, that was his first solution to a problem and he didn't hesitate. That character is immediately irredeemable in my eyes. If you're going to have shades of grey morality then there has to be certain lines that characters don't cross, no matter how close they get. There are some things that people can do that mean they're sick and evil inside, and no amount of puppies they save afterward will ever change that.

They do, but In this case it's relatively forgivable. Robert Jordan didn't write them - he dictated them to his assistant from a hospital bed because he was dying and didn't want to leave the series unfinished. Eventually Sanderson ended up finishing the series and his books are generally considered to be worse than average, partially because he butchers several character (most notably Berelaine), flanderizes Mat, and completely forgets one character even exists. It's definitely worth reading at least once though, but with that being said you won't really pick up on the entire plot the first time through.

The only later book that I really sympathize with the complaints over was Feast For Crows, and that's mainly because there was a massive wait for it only for it to not focus on hardly any of the major characters and cliffhangers that the preceding book ended on.

I feel like the more recent paper/craft styled games from nintendo look great, but i feel like they are just pushing the theme into 1 direction a bit too much and I feel like its limiting them.

Yoshi's Yarn World for example has cool interactions because of the yarn world, but I feel like it also comes off as extremely over-the-top childish.
The earlier paper marios did it great. It had that feel of a crafted world, but it didn't use the crafted limitations alone to present it and it struck a nice middleway between papercraft as inspiration and cool 2d graphics.
It's like they went "people like the artstyle? lets drop everything else that made it good as well and focus fully on that"
I get that designers nowadays want to make everything ingame associatable or explainable in the world through that worlds laws but sometimes it just comes at the cost of a good designed style and presentation and therefore lose the flare that made the others so good.
