Grinchfag here. The moment I saw the ring I knew it was fucking over. They weren't going to have a trailer to introduce an echo fighter all by himself, and none of the other characters made sense to introduce in a Wrestling/Boxing ring. Shit was over as soon as it started.

Because up until Brawl everyone thought Smash was just going to continue being this Nintendo-only party brawler. Snake single-handedly changed everything by being 1) a third-parter character, 2) from a franchise not even primarily associated with Nintendo, and 3) who advertised a PS3-exclusive game in his stage. And he was revealed day 1.

It was because they were unexpected. We never thought third party characters like that would get in.

I'd have to rewatch the "Everyone is Here" trailer but you're probably right. All I wanted out of a new Smash Bros. game after 4 was for everyone to return, even worthless shits like Pichu and Young Link, so getting that made my day so hard back at E3.
