This is something that annoyed me playing Sun&Moon, I can understand the first few trainers not having many, but once you get to mid-late game, there should be at least 4 or so per trainer.
I'm also just getting tired of Pokemon in general. They need to do something innovative outside of the same RPG formula, but Game Freak never will.
Sun and Moon made them visible. But only after you beat the elite four and talk to a specific npc. Then they can be viewed on the pc.

It's the only series that's allowed be a literal rehash since the 90's, introducing new mechanics and gameplay, only to drop them every generation unless it's convenient for them. Realistic ones? None. I'm pretty sure it's gonna be another SM - safe, ultra linear map, lack of content and gimmicks attempting to impress the kids.
If I had to be more optimistic, I guess the initial trailer didn't feature some new flashy gimmick or big plot. That could potentially mean that, while the region is obviously once again straight pathways, the thing they focused on might've been battling and battle facilities. They do seem to be focusing on the new gyms a lot and they kept saying these games were for the "core" crowd unlike Let's Go. That could be fun if done right, but I really don't bet on it.

I mean sure you can grind and power your way through but I remember in Gen 5 the amount of experience you got from weak pokemon kept you pretty close to the level curve. Challenge mode was pretty tough unless you abused healing items.

It's better now you mean. The problem with Ice types is that it has a million weaknesses and not enough things weak to it and it had almost no passive traits to make them desirable. Ice moves are incredible but adding an Ice typing onto a pokemon makes them objectively worse. They need at least 3 more types weak to them or 2 more resistances. Also make Hail not a shitty weather condition.

Ice statistically is super effective against more than average. Being SE against dragon, flying and ground are all really good types to be strong against. Grass has so many weaknesses that it isn't as lucrative but it allows water types to run ice moves to deal with their typical grass weakness.

Not entirely. Most of the big dragons are x4 weak to ice while fairy only deals x2. Also Fairy as an attacking typing isn't as ubiquitous and proliferated out to non-fairy types unlike ice moves which are on every fucking water type, and other pokemon like fucking nidoking.

Part of the problem is that fairies are weak to typings that aren't typically carried as coverage. Steel has basically become the new Dragon typing i.e. everything is just better once you slap a Steel typing on it. Granted Steel has always been great defensively. But now it's better offensively since the pixies have made the Dragons an endangered species meaning Bullet Punchers and Flash Cannons are now more important to get rid of them. Poison SHOULD be better but Earthquake is still everywhere and Steel invalidates Poison and therefore Poison has to remain in hiding.

Nightmare mode needs more than just feeding NPCs rare candies. GameFreak would have to completely change the way they hand out teams so NPC teams will work in symbiosis with one another. Rather than randomly throwing Pidgeys and Ratattas at them

That one. Let me say that I think Sun Moon had good ideas. But for every one good idea they immediately fuck it up with a stupid idea. Regional Variants? Fucking amazing idea! This should be standard for every entry going forward. But then they fuck it up by giving them to gen 1 mons exclusively. Totem Battles? Great idea. I love the idea of boss Pokemon who call in help and they assist them. But Z Moves exist and you can obliterate them before you get any fun out of it. Rotom also lets you get more than one. And on that token FUCK ROTOMDEX. That piece of shit is the second most irritating thing in these games. HMs are gone so no more HM slaves. But they also made ther maps super linear so you can't even take advantage of the Ride Pager.
On the topic of the cutscenes and story. I do like the idea behind it. The idea of helping to heal a broken family is much better than stopping a dinosaur who set the sky on Fire or whatever the fuck Cyrus was trying to do. But oh God the cutscenes are so obtrusive that I will never play through these games ever again. Worse almost none of the events have anything to do with you so it's hard to care unless you're invested in Lillie.

It's not so much graphics as it is art direction and world design. Xenoblade games aren't exactly graphical powerhouses but Monolith always manages to craft breathtaking worlds you want to (and for the most part are able to) explore, which is more than I can say about Pokémon
