I’ve been following the devs twitter for years now and following the game it has always looked pretty decent. I just checked into his twitter this morning for the first time in months, wondering if it would ever actually come out and then an hour later Ninty uploaded a trailer. Looks like it might actually be better than I thought. The only other project Yacht Club has backed was the Gunvolt pack, so I trust their judgement.

Shovel Knight borrows most of its ideas while also fundamentally not understanding how to use them. If a Mega Man game came out that was that linear and had that poor of sub weapon balance it would be torn to shreds.

Probably better than The Messenger, which seemed good with the sprite shifting and the good music, but then it had really bad comedy and "dude it's a Metroidvania now" as a twist.

Crazy how Yacht Club was so successful that they're getting into publishing now. Good for them. King of Cards hopefully drops in Summer so I can blitz through it and start awaiting their next game.

Nothing wrong with death pits in a Metroidvania, the problem with it was that the back tracking felt tedious and like padding instead of fun and exciting. Some of the portals were pretty interesting, but it would have benefited more of they took the extra content and just made like 4 extra levels out of them.

The problem with the bottomless pits is that you don't know if it's a bottomless pit or a new area. You have to open the map every time. Major flaw in my opinion, especially since your toe touching the bounding box of the screen is when you die, you can't even double jump out of it or cling to the wall there.

the song in the trailer was excellent. it does sound like it could be Jake Kaufman's work.

If the pits have black at the edge then it's a bottomless pit.
