I'm assuming you're talking about Morrowind and while I can see it being acceptable from a RP perspective, using spears early on is good for just about every character and one of the best ways to keep maxing out endure gains.
The lack of feet and good head armor always bites you in the ass later on, though. I'm more of a fan of either Orc for melee, assuming vanilla.

How did people endure the magicka regen in that game?
Magicka recovery alchemy items are rare and expensive early on, with dremora hearts becoming common only when you're far stronger anyway. Plus alchemy takes a lot of attempts to level it before the int gain snowballs. I felt forced to go melee and ranged with just a bit of support spells.

Atronach birthsign gives you a fuck ton of mana to use, and you can actually regen your mana by paying 10g to a shrine. Since shrine blessings are technically just casting a spell on you, spell absorption kicks in and regens all your mana.
