It's a very good game, you should get it.
Yeah, it's good.
Nice characters, good story, the combat doesn't get in the way of fun, and it's actually good unlike some other JRPGs.
Progression diverges from the usual "Get to the new city, buy max level stuff" but even if it might look like it, there's little grind unless you want to go extremely autistical with upgrades in the late game.
The only real problem is the pacing, as with all Falcom games the story only gets good after a while.
It's more than good, it's fantastic.
It's good, especially for the sale price. PS4 version is without doubt the best version to get, so it's a no-brainer. Just get it.
It's my favorite game from 2018
I don't have a ps4 or a good PC. Worth playing on vita or will tht ruin my experience?
Can we agree that Tears/Sorrow of Dana would have sounded better?
no, too on the nose
That sounds way too blunt and negative.
The PS4/Switch/PC versions have extra content and generally run better, as those are ports that came later from the original Vita version. But hey, you could still have fun with it.
How about consistent Latin like
Lacrima Danae
>replace weird uncommon word with boring straightforward word
If you only have access to a Vita, then go for it - a lot better than nothing.
It's just as the others said, the other versions are superior.
If I play on vita could I play just the extra stuff someday on PC or would I need to replay the whole game?
I don't speak Latin. but if that is correct Latin, then I guess it would have been better, especially because for the sequel they went with a full Latin title (Monstrum Nox, and not Monstrum of the Night or something similar). It would be more consistent with the sequel too.
You would need to replay the whole game.
Don't know about that, but if you ever happen on a PS4 later on, you can upload your Vita cross saves to PS4 cloud storage, that much I can offer you advice on.
A good chunk of the extra content comes in the second half
EU or something? Still shows full price on NA.
here, this I didn't know: So disregard it, I guess you don't actually have to replay everything if you have a save from around the middle?
Yes eu
Try it, it's worth it.
And if you like it, try the rest of the series, particularly Felghana and Origin.
Pic related is kind of out of date, but generally still applies.
Here's an updated version
Damn. Was looking to pick this up on sale, and it doesn’t help that there are no cheap 2nd hand copies. I picked up Tokyo Xanadu for $10 the other week, so I’ll play that when I’m done with Cold Steel 1. It’s been pretty fun.
Hmm, well Oath and Origin were designed to be run on 2005-2006 era PCs/toasters, so those games you'll definitely want to look out for. I don't think Chronicles should be that intensive as well, considering its sprite aesthetics. Good luck, prospective adventurefriend.
Thanks.
>PCE is best for Dawn and Wanderers
That's kind of surprising, is there a particular reason for that?
Favorite Ys game, I loved the fuck out of it at full price and definitely recommend if it's on sale.
Celceta can lag. Certainly it behaves far worse than Napishtim-style games.
Dana does lag on same system, and does this alot even in starting areas. It may be fine for some, but I believe action games like Ys are ones that are closest to "this should be played at most FPS possible".
Well, those are the versions that are the most popular and prominent, no doubt in part thanks to their amazing soundtracks. They were revolutionary back in the old days and inspired the soundtracks to many JRPGs and video games in general afterwards. You may not know, but Ys practically invented and elevated the video game music industry with its music, especially the PCE kind:

No, I'm very much aware of the series history, I'm just curious as to why the PCE versions specifically are considered best. I guess having the best music is as good a reason as any.
I mean, they had that kino PC-era anime 90's spritework feel as well as voice acting back then. They're probably the most fleshed out versions of the games, considering these aspects.
I liked the PCE version of Popful Mail for much the same reason, the animation and voice acting was really nice, better than the SCD version in many respects. Also nice to have the weird side-bump gameplay but with the camera centered on Mail instead of being slightly off-center like in the other versions.
I still like the SFC version best, though. It plays like a more polished version of Wanderers with a lot of the inane grinding taken out.
I hope Falcom revive Mail at some point, maybe not necessarily with modern Ys gameplay but something in that vein anyway.
Bretty gud taste, my man. I mean Falcom still remembers the game exists, at least. That's more than what other RPG series from other companies get these days.
twitter.com
Hah, it's even the same Mail pic from the SFC cover. That's neat. Maybe they'll do something soon, that'd be awesome.
I'm actually going to be applying to them soon, can't imagine I'll get a job there but if I do working on a new Mail game would be pretty much the best thing ever. Here's hoping.
Aw shit bro, now that's something real adventurous of you! What position are you applying for? If you do manage to get in, think you could get us some info on that inevitably kino Ys V remake as well?
Programmer. My Japanese is (hopefully) good enough to get me through an interview, dunno about the rest.
>think you could get us some info on that inevitably kino Ys V remake as well?
I mean if I can get away with it without getting in trouble or causing it, I'll do what I can. Assuming I get in, anyway.
How is it compared to DQ11?
Well, if Adol's adventure autism has taught me anything, it's that if nothing's ventured, nothing's gained. Good luck, man.
If you like dq you will hate ys
Ys and DQ are practically two different genres even from their very beginnings, dude. All I can say is that if you like ARPGs, killer music, and adventure, then you'll most likely like Ys VIII.
Thanks, I'll need it!
Only played and beat the first one and played some of the second before I just kind of stopped. Also have oath and ark of naphishtim. Might as well just jump right into those and wait for 7 and the other vita port one to go on sale because they look like the old ps2 jrpgs I used to like to play back in the good ol days.
It's decent, the story and characters are really generic and the game is ugly as shit, but the combat is fun and the soundtrack is pretty good.
Switch or PC for this game? I've played most of the others I've just been holding off on this one since I don't have a PS4.
extremely good.
I'd say go for Switch unless you have a really good PC
PC version seems to run like shit and has lots of crashes. Not sure if it´s still true.
Pretty good OP. Its my first Ys game and I got hooked to the series because of it
You are fucked either way, PC version had issues which I don't know are fixed or not, and the Switch version is 30fps, while every other version (except Vita) is 60. For an action game, that is a big deal, that's why I didn't go with the Switch version over the PS4. Otherwise the portability would be nice, but not at the cost of frame rate.
switch
the PC port is pretty shitty somehow, and docked switch is pretty good, while handheld is passable.
also , but im pretty used to the 30fps by now (having played most of em on psp/vita), so if frame rate doesnt bother you much, go for it
How often does Ys get sales on Steam/GOG? I got Ys origins from the Steam sale last week but wasn't sure how I'd like the gameplay, which I'm enjoying a ton. Regret not getting the others that were on sale at the time.
Just buy a PS4.
They go on sale fairly often, keep an eye on Humble too, since it goes on sale on there a lot.
Alright, guess I'll do the switch thing, thanks friends.
in my experience, every 3-4 month-ish
pretty steep sale too
if you like origin, ark and oath will be right up your alley, while 7, celceta spice it up a bit with parties, and 8 is the weird child of both the party-based 7 and jumpy oath. The story progression is great and refreshingly new too
>goes from shitty tsundere to best girl in one scene
what the fuck bros?
It's fantastic, though I'd personally recommend playing the rest of the series first so you can see the gameplay of the series evolve over time and you'd be able to get the handful of references to the previous games if you can play them.
Sorry, I'm just really new in JRPGs. I have completed DQ11 and really liked it, so I look for something similar
you mean goes from best girl... to best girl?
What's with the mandatory character tropes of the series from 7 onward?
>Orange haired girl who use piercing weap and is obviously into Adol (to be fair, who dont)
>Definitely-not-Dogi, with crush weap
>Loli with weird hammer and techs
>an Egdelord with piercing weap
>tan OP as fuck female character who joins last (and ofc bladed weap)
For me, it's tower of the shadow of death. the best Ys track.
youtube.com
>an Egdelord with piercing weap
Hummel's not an edgelord, he's just your average everyday autistic mailman who is also based
>that funk
Top-tier taste. But for me, it's Subterranean Canal.
youtube.com
It's been a while since I've played Celceta but I don't remember Karna being into Adol, she was sorta naive. Besides the village chief giving adol explicit permission to fuck her there wasn't really romantic tones in Celceta for Adol.
I dunno, but Karna is pretty intimate with him, naive and all. And there's that servant of god girl (Leeza?) too.
Well its not like Adol cares tho. He only has ADVENTURE and his sweetheart Feena in mind
The game is full of running gags and tropes man, like how Adol always crashes at sea and loses all his equipment. 7 and 8 was esp hilarious in that regard.
>yo Adol use your legendary weap to fight the giant sea monster!
>proceed to lose it at sea and have to scrap for a rusty sword instead
>Went on a doomed cruise just to deliver a jar of pickles and ship construction plans
Based autist
PCE is the only version for Dawn. There's also the other version of YSIV for the SNES but that's an almost completely different game and nowhere near as good.
>for me, it's Subterranean Canal.
Ys I & II music is almost like cheating, so have these:
youtube.com
youtube.com
And an underrated track from Origin:
youtube.com
But that's not Tension
youtube.com
>feenafags
>Adol caring for the romantic trivialities of anime thots when he could be going on adventures instead
This is as lewd as it gets in Ys, people.
Excellent taste, user. But for me it's Palace of Salmon youtube.com
YS IX scans are out lads, and Adol's design is getting more and more ridiculous
>implying Dana isn't just bootleg Feena
I saw them, looks like we're getting Clawdol kino once more.
Why couldn't I save Dana bros? Its not fair
>implying he doesn't use them as his personal onaholes
Did they finally show him? All I've seen so far is from those 20 or so seconds of footage they showed a few days ago.
>Full and proper 3d vertical map
>Honming claw
wait a minute
There's a thread up bro
I'm fucking blind. Thanks, user.
Game is garbage based on the demo.
