My only problem with HoMMV is that the maps feel very small
Played it a bit when it first came out. Haven't touched it since. I still play HoMM3 now and then though. Not sure why 5 never clicked, it just seemed 'ok'.
I think it's the game flow of 3, at least I love it along with general art style and UI. 3D in TBS games does not age graciously.
As for gameplay, V is fine. But just fine instead of stellar, it didn't quite male the same impact as 2 and 3 back in the day.
It doesn't have any meaningful innovations over 3 while being far slower and clunkier to play.
Is Heroes 5.5 mod any good? People speak good things of it but I must ask here since Yea Forums is always right.
From start to finish, visuals were meant to alure fans of other series like WH and WarCraft, and as such they completely dissconnected from the combination of fantasy and classic fairy tale style used previously
When it came to how it was handled, the artstyle is incoherent and oscillates all over the place in quality of design. Inferno is fucking amazing, Dungeon is glaring purple pile of feces. Other towns are either hit or miss, aquired taste or just mediocre at best
Tactical map is small compared to III., though pretty much comparable in size to that of II., also hexes are superior to squares
Maps are abysmal, though arguably random map generator works even better than that of III.
Balance overall is actually pretty well managed, especially with the expansion packs
Skills in skillwheel are harmonized decently, though could be handled better in some instances like Dungeon or Academy
Oh, and of course, they cut the base number of towns from 8 to 6, compared to III., though same as IV.

It's even smaller when you consider that non-humanoid units in h5 take up a whopping four squares. On top of that, they removed spells that increase/reduce movement. There is also no terrain penalty for fighting on non-native terrain. So movement is less tactical overall than it is in the previous games.

It's actually baffling that they abandoned all of these movement mechanics, if you consider how they split the speed and initiative attribute in both IV. and V. to remedy the Haste and Slow spells in III.
They really should have added separate spells for increasing movement points, instead of just increasing initiative

I liked V a lot but I only ever played it hotseat with a handful of friends. I tended to role undead and the skeleton archers seemed really OP since I'd get a ton after every battle and they stacked in huge amonts. How do other players feel about this? Was I shit, were my friends shit, is there a solid counter once someone has hundreds of skelly archers and keeps earning more after battles?

Add godrays and turn the bit more blueish/azure, rebuild the citadel and walls to be made of gray rock stone like granite and polished marble instead of sandstone and you got one of the best factions and themes in HoMM history

The presentation of campaigns feels like shit. I think the game itself is much better to actually play, but the presentation is a little janky and that does make a difference. Those cutscenes look like absolute garbage and I would have preferred the pre-rendered crap from H3 or even just straight up static scrolling text or dialogue boxes with static images.
Heroes 5 is just one of MANY victims of late 90's/early 00's polygonal graphics that just didn't age very well at all.

It's not just writing. The voice acting is atrocious, and the characters in the campaign don't even have animated mouths, yet the camera still zooms in on their faces during cutscenes. A game from 2006 not having lip movement is absurd.

It's a general downgrade from 3 on the basis of maps being small, objects taking way too much space on them and in general being too scarce

HoMM 5 Expansions and later games fundamentally did not understand the spirit of the game.
Each of the cities was an assortment of creatures vagueely themed aorund the enviroment.
The only exception beeing Haven. An "army" is an army of one creature type, not the entire stack of your Hero. Having all the units be of the same races changes the theme of the game into something more like age of wonders.
Its far less comfy and it makes armies of mixed towns, which is inevitably gonna happen as you conquer more sutff, feel realy out of places.

They hired Olivier Ledroit, one of the guys responsible for entire fucking look of Warhammer and completely ignored almost everything he done for them in favor of warcraft graphics. The only small bits of his designs can be seen in cities and character portraits
as said, vagueley themed around it, the theme of inferno was demons, that of necropolis was undead. but it still also had mummies not just military units of skeletons, its hard to discribe, but the distinction is there.
Just like Inferno didnt have Devil cavalry and devil archers, it had different kinds of demons.
