SEGA was a failing company of verge of collapse during the Dreamcast days. SGEA now is more financially secure than they’ve ever been. SEGA is objectively better off now. I do miss their hardware though and they always got their hardware out way before Nintendo.
>MegaDrive in 1988
>SFC isn’t out till 2 years later
>SEGA fans enjoying 16bit while Nintendo fans are still playing 8bit stuff
>Dreamcast a 128bit system launches just 2 years after N64 and graphically blows it away

Sega's games just weren't as good.

Sega's focus is just more narrow than it was in the 90's and early 2000's. They've figured out what franchises bring in the most money, such as Sonic and Yakuza, but at the same time a lot of their otherwise good IPs are kinda left on the wayside. That said I think they've improved since their slump that started to hinder them in the mid-2000's (Although a lot of that could be blamed on the Sonic series), and I'm glad to see them give VC another shot recently.
Cameron Lewis
did they really figure that shit out? they threw away bayonetta 2
David Collins
>get 2 keyboards for free
>PSO doesnt allow to play with them, just to write
Why
Jack Reyes
Funny that despite all the shit going on with Sega we still got good games early 2000s and a couple of good games on Xbox. Hell, even a bunch of ports for every console like SoA Legends
Julian Lewis
SEGA's issue was they only had one A list title.
They would crank out a bunch of B lists to keep them afloat, but Sonic was their money maker. So when Saturn never got a Sonic, it was doomed.
Nintendo, meanwhile, would only come out with one big game or so a year, but it would be a quality ass game. No Mario? They had Zelda, DK, Kirby, Pokemon, Star Fox, and Metroid.
SEGA obly really had Sonic
Charles Robinson
>love the aesthetic
>hate the gameplay
what do I do
Andrew Hall
Ok, more or less. The timeframe I was thinking of was a little past Bayonetta 2 but they did kinda drop the ball on not publishing that.
At least it came out.
Robert Bennett
Save art and don't play it

Play Phantasty Star Universe instead.

There was Virtua Fighter, which never got really popular in the west. I mean a console seller.
Something like SoR was pretty popular, but they stopped making them the moment Saturn happens. Shenmue was supposed to be the killer thing, but it was too late
Carter Kelly
how the fuck do you play pso these days?
I could emulate it on dolphin but its just not as fun alone

Yeah kinda.
Back in the day they were very popular in the arcade. Sega knew how to get your quarters. Meanwhile on the consoles, if you need a game to last more than 5 minutes, they barely acknowledged the necessity.

Evan Evans
yeah, it would be worth it
Jaxson Stewart
Sega is still collecting money on Bayonetta 2 since they own the IP. Platinum makes the game, Nintendo funds/publishes it, and Sega makes money by doing nothing. Not a bad deal.
Benjamin Howard
xbox is shit, smash is overrated and sonic isn't even that good in smash
Id take it in a heartbeat if it meant sega pumped out more content, but I still dont regret having my gamecube as things are
Jackson Martin
Man, I really like that keyboard desu
Matthew Sanders
>but Sonic was their money maker
>SEGA obly really had Sonic
That's completely wrong. Sega didn't need sonic to make money, their main source of profit have alway been the arcade. Daytona USA made more profit for Sega than any sonic game out there.
What made the saturn fail was SoA's advertising and the fact that there were more lazy and mediocre console ports of PC titles than actually good releases. In contrast, the Saturn did well in Japan, thanks to their advertising campaign and games like Virtua Fighter 2. Hell, that was the only console gen where a Sega console was more popular than a Nintendo one there. On the other hand they did shoot themselve in the leg by stopping the saturn's production while it was still popular, and they messed up the dreamcast launch by not being able to supply enough units to satisfy all pre-orders on launch day thanks to chip shortages.
The keyboard is nice, despite being rubber dome.
Jeremiah Scott
Ive played pso a bunch up to about very hard
what force is best for late game, character descriptions say they are ok with weapons but im pretty sure thats bullshit?
Adam Nelson
I've been a Sega fan since I was a little kid and I still am today despite Sega making some dumb decisions. Mainly because Sega does actually care about it's fans for the most part and is willing to improve themselves. That video they put out a couple years ago talking about how they lost sight of making fun games and wanting to recapture the magic of their old games from the 90s keeps my faith in them going.
You can see that now with some old IPs they've brought back lately. Virtual On got a new game after 13 years, Shenmue 3 is happening (yes Sega isn't developing or funding it but they could've said 'no' to Yu Suzuki) Sakura Taisen is finally getting a new game after almost 15 years, Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a return to what made the original game so great, and Streets of Rage 4 is happening. Sega isn't such a bad company really if they're willing to admit their mistakes and try to do better.
Hunter Kelly
>In contrast, the Saturn did well in Japan, thanks to their advertising campaign and games like Virtua Fighter 2. Hell, that was the only console gen where a Sega console was more popular than a Nintendo one there.
This. The Sega Saturn was more popular in Japan than the N64. The N64 didn't perform very well in it's homeland.
Jayden Hall
Phantasy Star switch english port FUCKING WHEN

Lot of their major talent is gone. It's sad. I wish Yuji Naka had stayed with Sonic Team and never left. Maybe we'd have more consistently good games in the franchise. I follow him on Twitter and he still talking about Sega and Sonic every now and then. I think if Sega were to ask him to come back and direct a new game or something he'd be happy to. They even had him voice the principal in the Sega Hard Girls anime so they're on good terms with him. youtube.com
Jace Allen
Time to learn Japanese user.
Levi Harris
Just typed in "lcd monitor white" into google and it brought up the exact monitor as in the op.
Levi Bennett
That's weird because when I was searching for white monitors all that came up was CRT shit.
Jackson Wilson
I enjoy pso2 please Sega give the series another chance maybe pso2's combat with pso1's aesthetic please Sega I've spent a lot of money on your japanese game please just give me anything i just want to play as a true HUcast again Sega that's all I want
Isaac Roberts
CASTs are cool.

what the fuck did they do to the cute robutts

Nothing.
Never happening sadly but that would be nice. I'll deal with a PSO3 that resets the power creep of modern PSO2.
Jace James
Did you not play PSO1? Some CAST bodies had flesh tones to them.
Anthony Ortiz
PSO had good UI icons.
Brandon Howard
was there anything to do besdies kill stuff and feed your mag? cuz that's all I did till lvl 100
Henry Ortiz
What's the structural advantage to giving a robot girls tits and muscular definition?
Jonathan Peterson
Not really, it was a simple game considering it was the first of its series. Only now with pso2 is there really more of the "side activities" away from grinding, but even then it's very limited.
Benjamin Howard
No. Get loot and maybe socialize with people in some limited aspect.
PSO2 lobby is comfortable.
Caleb Martinez
Some CASTs, not all of them, have metal/synthetic skin. Kind of like Aigis from Persona. You can usually see something "off" about them, like seam lines on their joints or cheeks, or their eyes look fake, almost like they're made of glass or something.
Noah Watson
best girl
I'm still sitting here waiting for a new NiGHTS, I was pretty bummed out that on the survey it wasn't one of the selectable games for "games you want to see more of in the future"
But hey I wouldn't say no to a new jet set or even Altered fucking beast
Benjamin Long
Did any of the games before 2 have the house building shit? I really love that. Feels kind of like renting an apartment in a huge city while you make ends meet killing aliens.
Angel Diaz
dae think PSO2 is soulless XD
William Brooks
>get excited and decide to play PSO2 after seeing this thread
>maintenance
shit
Aaron Ramirez
Don't think so.
>Feels kind of like renting an apartment in a huge city
Any screens showing this off feeling? I used a room literally twice in PSO2 and IIRC my window was just space.
Robert Hughes
>side activities away from grinding
Is there grind still in PSO2? When I returned after Beta/release last year, it was all waiting for 12 hours until an event quest pops up for 1 hour and spamming it. It's just gimmick quests now that are listed on an event schedule, otherwise you afk dance in the game or never log in.
Mason Miller
You can see a cityscape out the window. This is some fancy bigass suite and not the default one, but here you go.
Ayden Brooks
People shit on what PSO2 has become and while it does kind of suck, after this many years, I don't know what the alternative is. Some of the level and monster types could be less garbage and the absurd power creep has made the game worse but I feel like most long running games suffer similar issues.
PSO1 wouldn't be amazing if it was running for 7+ years either.
John Wood
PSO2 is hitting Episode 6 now. The others never went that high, right?
Samuel Perry
No. PSO2 has had way more content. Even if much of it has been poo.
Luke Anderson
it was 32-bit
Adam Stewart
What's your name gonna be user I'll add you
Isaac Powell
Can someone just FUKKNG rip the character models and post them online somewhere ahhhhhhh
William Thompson

Jace Green
aesthetic as fuuarrk
Jason Long
>a consoles longevity and success was solely based on a fighting game
>while its rival had many great multi-plats and couldnt outperform it
>in its own homeland
sounds fucking surreal just typing it out
Henry Hernandez
And in PSU they had fleshy bodies as well.
Assuming 2 is chronologically after PSU and PSO1, then the tech has advanced and newer CASTs are becoming more human like
Asher Clark
Actually yeah why has no one ripped stuff from PSO yet
Jonathan Baker
I think the lack of RPGs is what really hurt the N64's popularity in Japan. Not to mention next to zero arcade ports.
Jackson Anderson
m8
Ryan Torres
He meant that the OP pic had PAL dreamcast console but the rest of the setup and games are JAP region, brainlet.
Landon Hughes
>I think the lack of RPGs is what really hurt the N64's popularity in Japan
im not sure, because if virtua was able to beat n64 by a long shot, then nintendo should have been able to surpass the saturn with their own flagships, i guess rpgs had a role in their shit sales?
Jeremiah Wood
why were the 6th gen consoles the most aesthetically pleasing consoles with the most weird and aesthetic games?
god i miss that feeling
nowadays all games play, feel and look the same
Jacob Nelson
Someone go post on an obscure game asset ripping forum and beg for PSO models for me.
>nowadays all games play, feel and look the same
Stop being blinded by nostalgia.
Colton Wood
>why were the 6th gen consoles the most aesthetically pleasing consoles with the most weird and aesthetic games?
maybe because companies actually wanted to be different
>MUH NULLSTALGIA
not an argument faggot
Wyatt Morales
>majority of games use Unity, Unreal Engine 4, or the oddball that uses CryEngine
there's a reason why all games look and feel the same
Zachary Thomas
Yup, I mean nowadays we have such varied looking games on the amazing UE4, especially when they use default shading and assets from it.
Nicholas Foster
I found a post on Reddit about ripping PSO models but I think it's mainly for Blue Burst
Eli Jackson
About ripping or providing the rips....
Diversify what you're playing. You might have an argument that the most mainstream games aren't whacky Dreamcast-era Space Channel 5 games or whatever but there's enough PC indie shit that looks unique.
Austin Collins
>Stop being blinded by nostalgia
im a literal zoomer i dont feel nostalgic to them
how can you even deny that all video games nowadays are trying to go for the for the most realistic graphics and for an open world setting with a casualized gameplay and mechanics
its like theyre all following the same formula that has worked for them and people just keep consuming that shit without a thought
its all really just depressing
David Hall
Am I wrong when I think PSO, while having some anime aesthetics, was at least gritty and grounded enough to take seriously while PSO2 was a flaming pile of modern anime inspired garbage?
God I could kill for a PSO1.5 that only expands the PSO combat system without using dumb anime photon arts as a gameplay crutch like PSZ, PSU, and PSO2 does. I really don't want to do this comparison, but maybe something more Souls like.
Christian Moore
Then you're also retarded.
You go to Italy, park at McDonalds and complain that Italian food is the same as anywhere else in the world.
>Food
>Analogies
There are unique games and interesting games made all the time. You're just willingly ignoring them in favor of the MountainDewritos shit that shows up on your doorstep every day.
Hunter Flores
>Am I wrong when I think PSO, while having some anime aesthetics, was at least gritty and grounded enough to take seriously while PSO2 was a flaming pile of modern anime inspired garbage?
Yes, you are.
Here's an example of your old, gritty and grounded anime. And don't make me pull Doreamon out.
Bentley Sanders
Excuse me but where the fuck did I say that the anime aesthetics where what made it gritty and grounded?
But you are right in that PSO2s color palette is bright vomit compared to PSOs color palette.
Cooper Rogers
>how can you even deny that all video games nowadays
>its like theyre all following the same formula
Again I'd say you have a point if you said "many" or something but you need to look around more. Shenmue didn't look like Crazy Taxi and not every modern game is The Last of Us or whatever.
Owen Bell
No, because PSO was also inspired by the then current anime just like how PSO2 is a product of it's own time.
John Ross
Sega is at their worst this gen than any other before it shit for brains
Ryder Flores
PSO is 100% anime, just like Final Fantasy games.
You're just throwing around pointless idiotic buzzwords you learned on Facebook to go "It is anime, but it isn't because I like it so shut up. Everything I like is gritty and mature and grounded and everything else is childish, vomit inducing and anime garbage."
See
Mason Martin
>PSO2fags white knighting what the series has become almost a decade later
You are full of shit, it is not 100% anime. It can't possible by 100% anime, otherwise the sequels wouldn't be noticeably less aesthetic.
If you are talking about "PSO but anime" then you're talking about PSZ. And PSO2 went even further beyond fucking PSU, which was anime as hell.
Landon Russell
Are you retarded?
It's not NES/SNES/Genesis. Devs didn't account CRT specific things into developing games for Dreamcast.
Luke Richardson
This pic pleases my eye holes
Mason Wilson
Tricktrack is one of my favorite musics from PSO
>grew up playing the old rpgs
>mfw hearing tricktrack for the first time
Isaiah Watson
No, once I heard it was going to play like PSO I kind of lost interest. PSO is great but I was hoping they were going back to the old school rpgs with Nova. Is it fully in english? I might check it out.
Owen White
I'm working on playing the two PSP games before I go into Nova, sadly, or I'd definitely join you
Angel Young
The PSP PS games are some of the shittiest things I’ve ever played.
Colton Baker
Sega’s hardware has always been underrated (except maybe Saturn which was genuinely pretty bad) but the Dreamcast wasn’t actually a 128-bit system. The same misleading definition which would declare it a 128-bit system could also be used to label the N64 a 128-bit system.
But no matter because the Dreamcast’s GPU was truly a brilliant piece of engineering. Basically the N64 had a very powerful GPU for the time but its z-buffer technique ate up memory bandwidth like a motherfucker which slowed shit right down. Dreamcast’s GPU solves this issue with a genius technique called tile based deferred rendering which is why it is so much more powerful than N64 despite being released only 2 and a half years later.
Oliver Cooper
Stadia.
Joseph Davis
>tfw have had a strange urge to develop a game for the dreamcast lately
>no idea where to even begin to start, considering i don't even know the basics of coding
why is my brain retarded, and where would i begin
Wyatt Long
are you fucking stupid or something?
Caleb Hall
Not him but he’s sort of right. Dreamcast supports progressive scan which is flatscreen friendly.
Cooper Bennett
>128bit
David Ward
There is no reason, PSO2 despite being trash is the most successful entry in the series.
Justin Cooper
Dreamcast supports 480 progressive scan and cleans up and looks gorgeous on LCD.
Eli Scott
Nolan Hernandez
Except they made the best RPGs like Phantasy Star and Shining Force. God I miss playing those games. Why did Sega had to give us the middle finger?
Xavier Sanders
Why did they went from cool looking characters design in the first couple PSO then changed into teenagers wearing edgy clothing?
Brandon Fisher
Because the game has been going for almost a decade and they need outfits for otaku with bad taste to pay for.
Vanilla PSO2 gear isn't that different than PSO.
Christian Hughes
I had both the keyboard and the game but didn't had internet back then. So I played it all by myself for months. I had to grind for 20h to beat the first boss. I became so over leveled I pretty much one shotted the first and the second bosses.
Aiden Williams
Correct. They were much better.
>Playing outrun in 1986
Pretty good
