I also think that only looking at the latest and greatest triple A stuff misses the point of PC. Almost every independent dev publishes to PC, so there's so much weird doujinshi stuff floating around. It used to be stuff like cave story but now it's stuff like Hypnospace Outlaw and Baba is You. Stuff that would never get the spotlight on console that people are already calling personal GOTY.
Consoles used to be somewhat unique in their design, externally and internally, but know they're just watered and locked down PCs.

It had multiplayer soul, the features was on PC long before consoles. The closest I've ever felt that possibly compared was Xbox 360 online, all of its features and the type of multiplayer games it had reminded me of PC. Something that the original Xbox and the Xbox One didn't manage for some unexplainable reason.

1. Consoles usually have a cozy interface before the game starts up. Steam or your desktop don't really compare unless you make an effort to rice it up.

2. Consoles provide a guaranteed experience (at least they used to). You're not afraid you'll have to close the game after 5 minutes and tinker with shit to get it working right. Obviously this comes with the major downside of not being able to mod your games.

3. PC gaming has been the domain of western devs for decades (unless you're into PC-98 or doujin games). Western games are generally more soulless and technical, more "software" than "game."

Indies are trash, what he meant were games made by a dev studio without a backing of a giant publishing conglomerate. Industry giants like we have today are a relatively recent development, up until mid 00's or so, most studios either self-published, or made deals with publishers, but they weren't their literal property.

Maybe i'm wierd, I mean, ok, there's a difference once we go above 60, but at least for me it feels so minor, that i'd rather do locked 60fps at a higher res. I regret buying a 144hz panel, instead of buying something either bigger or ultrawide.

you probably don't even have it set up in the correct way to fully utilize the 144hz and actually have it running constantly at 60 because you're using wrong cables or haven't changed the hz settings and you haven't noticed

I'm not talking about indies, back in the 90's it was the golden age of gaming. Development wasn't yet so prohibitively expensive as it is today, and at the price point of 60$ you were GUARANTEED to make a profit.
Game equivalent of modern AAA were being made in much greater numbers, and since it was literally impossible to lose money, nevermind go broke(unless you made a bomb the likes of Bubsy 3D or something) that everybody was experimenting, new genres were born all the time and variations upon existing ones too.
Nowadays making AAA vidya doesn't cost 2-10kk$ anymore, and with budgets of 20kk$ and up, with some monsters encroaching upon 200kk$ territory, a single financial disappointment can outright nuke your company - and it did. The entire A-AA sector collapsed within 5 years, their properties bought out by what became the biggest players of today, their IP's either whored out or shot behind a barn.
Nobody's experimenting anymore because the financial risk is too big, it's all sequels infested with monetary practices to further guarantee a nice profit.
