my own speculation, it's my own idea based on the very few things we've seen.

The reason why Pirate's Curse steps out a leg up isn't just controls.
There's an inherent problem with "core" Shanate. Either as a Metroidvania (1, RR), or level based (HGH), the way transformations work creates a very awkward stop and go form of accessing the abilities you obtain. And because abilities themselves only have a handful of moves for each one, it's often rare you have a reason to stay in one over shantae other than to clear a roadblock of some form.

To elaborate a little.
Monkey, you occasionally stick in for stretches of time when having to traverse areas you've already gone through to try to make the most of slightly heighten speeds and smaller hitbox.
Harpy of course stands as the late-game "just fuckin fly around and try to find shit" ability.
But unless it was needed, you basically avoid going to Mermaid, Crab, Bat, Elephant, or god forbid fucking Mouse.
The transformations are very... superflous to general level design and act more as extravagant keys. They aren't an organic part of Shantae's whip & magic moveset. Compare it to the pirate tools, your typical Metroid arsenal, or fucking Bunny Must Die's upgrades.

Yeah I really want them to find a more graceful way to implement transformations. I LOVED Pirate's Curse, but it really feels awkward when the best game in the series is the one that threw the formula away.

It has its moments. Won't pretend the fanservice isn't part of the appeal, but it's still just a bonus.

I think the problem comes from how there's nothing wrong with needing to stop and dance, especially when transformations have been getting quicker, but that the games keep moving towards trying to be speedrun oriented to make up for how short they can be.

It was fine when you're starting the game and you're already slowing down for puzzles, platforming, or to fight enemies, but Pirate's Curse was really fast and you literally plowed through areas.

But then that digs into a bigger problem on the whole.
The GBC game was decently lengthy (especially for the time) to be a more traditional adventure and the transformations played decently off it.
Pirate's Curse, while more contained and level based, was so more geared with inherent movement options that it becomes such a ridiculously good speed game.
RR and HGH both sit in this middle ground of not quite getting either. RR being at least contained enough to just the 3 transformations and being a metroidvania in map structure keeps it more solid.

Either focus on a small pool of fleshed out transformations that are worthwhile alternatives to normal Shantae, or make them less stop and go so it doesn't break gameplay flow to use for short bursts.
