They really haven't atleast when speaking about platformers. Sunshine has just as many issues with clipping and general bugginess as Sa2 I can't tell you have many times i've clipped through slopes and moving objects in that game not to mention some of the mechanics(like the roulette part) are just downright broken, Comparing Sa1 to SM64 is about the same.

There's a fine line of "he's used to it" and "it's not as bad as people say" that comes with this kind of territory. SA1/2 simply has flaws, nothing you can deny about it, but they aren't full on game killing flaws, at worse, can hamper the flow based on what can you tolerate in games. What is he having the most problems with in the game? Is he playing through the Sonic/Shadow levels like a champ, but failing the Hunting/Mech levels?

SA1/2 just aren't perfect games, and anyone saying this have bad standards given the games that did start off rough, actually improves on their strengths and washed out the shit, while 3D era Sonic never had, mostly thanks to SEGA's incompetence. But they are not bad games to play, at worse, could be considered mediocre, and really good at best.

I like how you completely ignore Galaxy to Odyssey, while only using SA1/2 as baseline comparisons like that's the only games SEGA released since. Heroes to Galaxy, (or to be fairer to release time) Unleashed to Galaxy and Forces to Odyssey, you can clearly see how the flaws of Sonic never left the series why most of the bad of Mario 64 has long since left from Mario at this point. Mario is refined, while Sonic hasn't, and at this point, likely never will. That's the biggest difference why comparing the two is ludicrous and downright hypocritical.

I'd rank it on par with ASR, advanced 2 is better than STH1, CD is good visually and has great music for both NA and JPN releases but the level design is a nighmare.
Sonic the fighters is fine, good-ok. And as easy as Battle can be, customizing Emerl, the sprite animation and the music I would say puts it on Good tier.

I'll give you that Advance's level design throughout the series is very hit or miss. Sky Canyon from Advance 2 is a fucking shitshow of bottomless pits. I've gotten good enough at them to look past that myself though, which is why Advance 3 is my favorite 2D Modern Sonic title, although I enjoyed Mania a lot.
I think the first Sonic is a fine game, but it's clear the improvements that were made improved the game a lot. I think all the marketing around speed Sonic got probably pushed devs to emphasize speed to a degree that was just the right amount. Sonic 1 had a bit too much slow or boring zones or just parts of zones.

Premy is a strange case, in my opinion. Since his favorite is Heroes and he seems to mostly favor the games from the mid 2000s over anything post 2009 (like many fans do) I can kind of see why he would be annoyed at the Mania pandering, since it isn't what he grew up playing, but at the same time that game earned its praise. Not to mention that there isn't much Modern Sonic content for fans to be excited about (because as good as TSR looks and probably will be, most Sonic fans didn't really seem to bother with the All Stars Racing games to fully care about its existence due to those being spinoffs and crossovers and also for not being Riders games). He also kept predicting that they would confirm the Adventure remake and show movie shit at SXSW, so in some ways he basically set himself up for disappointment, like many fans do on multiple occasions.

My point is that back then people didn't actually defend broken games over boring because I guess people had higher standards for games to begin with or something. A boring game is just that, boring. Ignorable and forgettable. A broken game in your favorite series? That's heartbreaking.

And I personally find this a hard pill to swallow, but since this board is the worst at video game anything, I'm not really convinced this is a majority opinion down to the kids of today, and at worse, is an adult gamer problem they would either feel like this because they wasted money on a game like that, or would just have the mentality to just pirate it. Either way, I'd still play Lost World over 06. I couldn't believe the quality of 90s Sonic games would lead to 06 for me to accept that game 13 years ago, and I don't have much regard to feel any different now that Mania happened.

And if I had to compare, Unleashed is still a funner bad game to 06, that doesn't have broken gameplay to make it "feel fun".

Not him but I think what was attempted with the story could have been interesting. The different protagonists are more engaged in the course of events. The antagonist being two entities with one being more usual and close to the likes of a less involved Chaos that still set the stakes, and a threat that meddles with our different protagonists & their thoughts. I probably worded this very poorly, but I hope you'll understand where i'm coming from.
