Why should Steam have the monopoly on PC gaming?

Steam has done nothing with their "monopoly" besides be pro-consumer to a fault. And they earned their spot by being the best service, not by buying out exclusives or by tricking developers into supporting them with unsustainable short term revenue sharing.

Because they provide the most consumer friendly, versatile and feature loaded games platform on the market. They also don’t pay to get third party games exclusively and let the market decide on whether they want to use their platform or not.

And Epic Games is doing absolutely everything in their power to strongarm their way into a high position in the PC games industry, doing as little effort on making their platform at all comparable to the rest and just pushing to take as many games away from Steam as they possibly can.
Is Steam the best option for the consumer? God no in a perfect scenario, but reality isn't perfect. If it's not purchaseable as a standalone you can put on your desktop or in a folder, Steam is 100% the 2nd best choice from both a consumer and a developer standpoint. Blah blah features, blah blah advertising, blah blah sea of shit so your game may not ever get seen if you don't push it a bit, blah blah blah...
