id has been using better versions of that tech for all their games, we're at megatextures 4.0 by now. It's part of the reason DOOM runs so well. It's actually quite impressive technology now that the hardware can keep up.

I'm fairly certain this game is just an attempt by Bethesda to jump on the Far Cry/Assassins Creed/generic open worlder market, but I'm pretty certain the bubble for the genre burst long before this one was announced.

The hardware could already keep up when it got released. They had it running on iPhones back then. The problem was their use of baked lighting which bloated the file size and then trying to squeeze it into the smallest space, resulting in shit visuals.
