To be fair, the level design is to blame. Half of 1/2GH levels were boring. What the hell they were thinking with the magic carpet race and aerial battleship sequence ?
Also the transformation unlock was almost not rewarding.

The problem the Shantae games have always had is that there are no secrets to be found. Every time I get a new ability in these games, I'll remember a strange little nook I found in an earlier level that the ability might work on. When it does, it ends up being something that will eventually move the story forward that the dialogue just outright tells you about later on. I would have suggested hiding new costumes or palette swaps for her dress, just to have a little something.

If they want to keep it the first step should be allowing Shantae to dance mid movement. Stopping and standing still for every change is painful. Maybe integrating a special bar, if you don't get damaged or constantly on the move you can instantly change forms.

Yes it got finished, a bit sort but the DLC fleshed it out a bit (still used the same levels but with different characters and story). I kickstarted it at the base level (I got the game +dlc) and was pretty pleased with the game.

That is a damn shame and a tragedy, imagine what other comics we could have about the other games especially because it is really rare to get a great artist alongside a great story writer especially in something that it does not need them… I do believe they could go the more action orientated so she could dance while she fights and the animal transformations have several moves plus add more over the top sequences those are what people remembers the most like run run Rottytops or the Sand castle and go full metroidvania.
The soundtrack is a 10, the setting is a 10, the art stile and humor is a 10 and the main character is a 12 the gameplay is the only thing holding her from being the hands down queen of the indie games.

The transformations need to be integrated into the moveset like the pirate tools. Double jump poofing you into a harpy for a moment, ground pound = elephant. jump+up = spider etc. To keep the hook in check the bellydancing is used in rhythm games to unlock new transformations/skills. They could even expand that into a battle mode for some multiplayer, and this would also allow the other girls some extra time in the spotlight as they'd be playable, and shantae could have a "dance-off" with them periodically throughout the campaign

Have you replayed it recently? Traversing the overworld is pure torture, not only does it intentionally send you to opposite sides of the world each time in order to maximize the backtracking but you have to stop and switch forms every ten steps to clear obstacles you already cleared a hundred times before, and there are monsters that seem to have been designed for the sole purpose of slowing down backtracking.

That it was a technically impressive game has nothing to do with the gameplay, which had severe flaws. And teleport squids don't excuse the horrible backtracking, specially when they require foresight and planning that you won't have on your first playthrough.

I need to stop reading these threads at this point. It's like being in a Modern Sonic thread where the appeal of 90s era Sonic is completely disregarded over lots and lots of non Sonic centric appeal like shonen or furshit pandering. Almost identical in this thread really.

I liked Risky's Revenge despite being kinda short. I think what it offers is a nice and simple kind of gaming experience almost like Kirby. The problem is that since it's like a Metroidvania, you want more Metroidvania elements instead of Metroidvania lite. I'd rather take the original elements and make something on it's own merits. And I think if Shantae ever got a 3D title before, it could have been pushed more to make more modern conventional improvements overtime. That's the one issue with 2D, people that grew up in 3D era expect more for less now. That's why even Kirby games now are getting flack and more and more people beg for some 3D reimagining to "save it". There's no winning.

I think Shantae would work better as a linear adventure, with less backtracking if you're not expecting fast travel. If you are, you gotta force the transformations into instant battle suits or something that avoid slow down on flow, and would flow better for massive backtracking, explorational gameplay. But at that point, I'd just ask for a 3D game ffs.

I suppose I was just rambling, but to make blatant; just make the 2D gameplay less about exploration if transforming too often it too annoying for "fans" or drop transforming via dancing with instant transformation that could make sense in universe like battle armor or something. Personally if you want a game with exploration at this point, 3D games is what that's for. I'm not all too keen on 2D games being for exploring that much when 3D lets that feel more natural than not.

It has a great setup for a TV show. A dopey guy for laughs, a trouble causing happy go lucky friend, few recurring villains, all kinds of monsters, a unique setting... hell, I'd watch that.

I want Shantae but the mechanics are about her getting different hair styles.
Twintails for rapid-fire attacks and so she can helicopter through the air, one big braid for slow attacks that deal massive damage, and a hime cut for stronger magic attacks.
