It was a major cliffhanger for sure, and there will probably be another story patch after all, but fuck you, that foreshadowing is absolute goat.

The closest these people have come to literature is reading the subs for shitty slice of life animes. There's very few cases where a deus ex machina is good writing and this isn't one of them.

It was pretty clear from the trailer that that fight didn't mean much.

It's a shame G'raha uses the worst face. They should really give him his own model if they're going to make him so important to the plot.

I just have to say, I love how they're incorporating more story telling mid-battle now, like how they used to do it with the SNES Final Fantasies. Like how Lyse and Yugiri are weakened at the end because you saw them expending all of that energy during the battle to get Hien away from harm.

That was very very lackluster compared to ARR and HWs endings. No real big finale, no showing Estinien saving us, and just more dragged out plot points. I'm pretty disappointed that was it. ARR had a way bigger personal impact and HW ended with the big battle and the sacrifice of our friend. This just kinda happens even though the stakes were way high.

Also they should have mentioned/shown Estinien was on the way/present to help out the Alliance and he just makes for us when he hears we're facing Zenos, so it's not an entire asspull that he bails us out. And having that be offscreen was, once again, a crime.

The way the cinematic/buildup showed it I was expecting a lot more out of our battle with "Zenos", but it kinda just happens. The part before the WoL got there was cool but the fight definitely peaked early.

Overall I don't even think this was worth delaying. There was like 30 minutes of new stuff that just kinda ends? Stormblood has been the expansion of "Just about cool but then takes a step back or falls short" (even if you can see what it's trying to do) to me and this cements it.

I hope Shadowbringers MSQ is better than this. This patch and the talk Yoshi's had about them being under the gun to get ShB ready to ship has got me worried they are going to cut corners/come up short again.

is the dps check for the zenos battle a little tight for a healer or am i missing something? i'm ilvl 372 and it seems like i just don't have enough juice. i dps the swords as soon as they appear but he gets his cast just as i'm finishing off the last sword. could it be because i'm using a ilvl 365 weapon? if memory serves i think there was a previous story battle where i had to switch to dps too. maybe i should forgo combust 2 since they have little health. previous expansion i would of been near max ilvl but this one i mostly checked out because i was burned out on ilvl resets. i went ast because my highest dps is like ilvl 350 or so.

That MSQ ending was pretty bland. Nothing will ever come close to ARR's ending.

I'm honestly disappointed - not by the cliffhanger per se, but for the fact that the Shadowbringers trailer has done a better job telling us anything that the story itself.
The only good part was seeing all of our elf husbands (and our former elven father-in-law) saving our ass and talking to us.

The rest? Let's list it:
- Showdown against Zenos: expected and depicted in the trailer (the Hien part was nice-ish, to be fair)
- Mysterious figure who is totally not Gra'ha Tia in his weird circle with the shards: trailer
- "Something something crystal tower": expected

- Varis restarting production of the Black Rose: though we know there are Ascian shenanigans going on, Varis is still very focused on conquest by warfare and we all knew that. Also, from the trailer, fanfest and so, we had already heard that the conflict with Garlemald will continue on even while we're at the First. And Varis is not even remotely nice even though he dislikes Ascians as much as we do (and let's remind ourselves that he went full nazi on the previous section of MSQ, so there's that). So, well, also somewhat expected.

TL;DR: if they just inserted Yoshi-P's character with a sly smile saying "PLEASE LOOK FORWARD TO IT", it would have been somehow more honest than what we got.

And yes, I'm a bit mad.

I'm very disappointed, so much so that I couldn't believe it when the end credits were rolling. I feel like the plot points have been dragged out to the point where I would want more resolution or payoff before going into a new expansion. The MSQ in 4.56 took me 30 minutes to complete, involved an offscreen save from a character that hasn't been in the story for 2 years and then proceeded to leave a flat ambiguous ending.
I liked the (spooky) Zenos tying up of loose ends even if they've been teasing that as something else for several patches.

There are still plenty of characters with loose ends and the major plotlines of everything past Doma have gone practically nowhere.

I mostly play for the story and am happy to sub £20 every quarter or w/e it is to have some nice continuation. I'm not getting that atm. This has left me feeling like the past 9 months have just been filler to encourage me to buy the new expansion to get actual content and that's a bit too shallow for my taste.

I think the game's scope is just too wide for them to produce good content at this point. Every time they add some long term system they have to maintain, it's a tiny bit of maintenance that has to draw resources from somewhere else. We're going to have more jobs than ever before, so you can bet once again that almost all are going to be phoned in minus the two or three that get actual writers, like DRK in SB. Or they over commit to stupid shit like Eureka so we get less dungeons and side plots. Or they're too locked in to adding a set number of zones each expansion, so when they can't milk Ala Mhigo enough, they half ass Othard and neither area can live up to expectations.

I dunno. I want to just enjoy the game but I can really start to feel the decline with Stormblood.

I think they should probably rethink splitting the last story patch in two; personally I’m fine with having it all release at once and wait a few months til the expansion, especially if it’s as short as 4.56 was.

I think partially why it’s unsatisfying is we still don’t have a clear idea what’s going to happen in Shadowbringers, and how The First connects with Garlemald. I mean the Enigmatic Figure literally tells us the war doesn’t matter, yet the story cliffhangers are about Black Rose and the original Zenos...and also CT. It just doesn’t quite all connect so it mostly feels unsatisfying.

That being said, now with the full ShB cinematic and the VAs in the credits we can finally put the “is the voice Alphinaud or Arbert” debate to rest

The role-play fight as Hien was so dull, I was just waiting for it to end. Why are we just spamming 1 button for instant damage while keeping a dot up, could they not give us more abilities? Why even have that heal ability, that barely heals you, on a 2 min CD when Yugiri and Lyse save your ass anyways with their heal with a much higher potency? At least make the fight exciting to make up for the fact that this part tells you absolutely NOTHING new about what's coming...

I expected to at least go to the Crystal Tower to find out what was there, but they didn't even give us that :/

It's far easier to add DPS classes because they're all just different button combinations to deal damage. You just need to think up a gauge to manage and 1 or 2 utility abilities to throw out. Tanks and healers actually need to differ from one another since their damage rotations are incredibly linear and they share a similar toolkit. Given the design of the game, their options are limited.

For example, I'm still not even sure what Gunbreaker is meant to accomplish. Its description makes it sound like it's the bastard child of current DRK, but a Ammo button instead of Dark Arts. They also said it doesn't actually shoot, so there goes the idea of it have a Ranged DPS stance. Otherwise, there's only so many ways you can create static -damage% abilities before you consider the role a botched DPS.

Healers are in an even worse situation since they share even more tools and they can't come up anything other than Shields/Regen between the three of them. Of course, other types of healers exist in MMOs, but they don't really work here because of how rigid the gameplay is. I've asked in these threads before how people expect DNC to work as a healer, and barely anyone could up with anything other than Mudra-heals or melee healer. The latter could "work", but only in the sense that its gimmick would make it too situational good/bad depending on fight mechanics. And, unfortunately, they just don't do niche designs in this game; everything with a similar label has to have the same tools/viability, or raiders/DF-shitters start to panic. I mean, they already do, even though the actual performance difference between each jobs is laughably minuscule compared to other games.

Bottom line, they worked themselves into a corner: where it's far easier to come up with a different button order to a DPS rotation than justify a different way to keep the party alive.

This patch gets like a D in my book.
The amount of content was really disappointing. They pitched the two parts of this patch as whole MSQ patches akin to the rest of the 4.x series. It was only a half hour of content, and not because they didn't want to stretch out a bunch of nothing,>! we didn't even check in with Hien, Lyse, or Yugiri to see if they were okay.!< There was also the fact that the >! stolen Elezen body containing what we suspect to be Zenos' soul was there at the final battle with EliZenos!

It's massively disappointing. We waited all that time for...this? Like why was it even in two parts? Part 2 was half an hour. I went in expecting some sort of grand finale and got almost nothing added. I think everyone was expecting it to at the very least to get us closer to what's going on in the trailer. If I hadn't watched fanfest I wouldn't even know where this expansion was going. ARR and HW both ended with a clear lead in to the next part of the story that left me pumped. This led to me yelling "that was IT?" when the credits started to roll. The credits were seriously longer then the entire MSQ and that's a problem

I think the biggest problem is there isn't a lot they can do to move the plot forward without, you know, the major thing happening at the tower that transports us to the first. It basically ends where the expansion begins. It isn't like HW had a much better end.

I would have expected her to fill the role that Tataru did here, because she'd piece together "the archons are on the First" more believably than Tataru just kind of meandering into it.

She's not wrong that we'll need them though - albeit not for Garlemald reasons (though we are implementing Thancred's plan there), but because we know there's weird aether thinning stuff going on and WoL sure isn't the one to figure that stuff out.
What we don't know, and what I guess is about to be a very big deal, is how exactly Black Rose is going to react to it. We can't particularly do a whole lot to stop Varis from using the gas, so if Rose + aether = very bad then our only option is to deal with the latter, presumably via balancing the First, which would fit the narrative that continuing to muck around in this war is pretty pointless. Though I'd love to know how crystal guy knows all this.

If that's the thrust of it, it would be nice for us to know more of the picture as characters and not just as players who get to see extra cutscenes, but I guess eventually Solus is going to go on some spiel and tell us everything because evil villain laying out their scheme tropes. Things feel a tad convenient in general right now (beyond just plot device Estinien) but we'll see.

I'll have to admit, I found most of it disappointing. Yes, they avoided pointlessly killing anyone off, including Elidibus, but his performance was a bit dull, and so was everyone else's. It confirmed, as suspected, unfortunately, that "G'raha" (the guy who looks like him) was the mysterious voice, killing off any possibility of interaction with Zodiark at this stage at least - let's hope becoming WoD at least brings that back on the table later on.

The only interesting thing here was ending on the note that Varis may be possessed by Solus - he was throwing too much bait, using Solus's own lines to Varis, and the face at the end... Odd, then, that an Ascian Overlord can hide himself from another one. It does suggest, if true, that Solus may be working at odds with Elidibus, though. The only thing I enjoyed was seeing him combine Zenos's powers with his own.

Honestly that DPS check is tight; I have a i393 SCH, and I only managed to down the last sword at 97% of the enrage bar. Admittedly I wasn't going all-out, but I would have assumed, given that the last dungeon of the game only gives i375 gear, that my own ilevel would make it easier.

What ive been viewing SB as is finishing story lines thats been going on in Eorzea and Othard since 1.0, Ala Mhigo and Doma, then setting the stage for something far grander in scale. Currently we have an unknown voice, now figure, speaking to us from the first shard... but Hydaelyn sent Minfilia to absorb the light from that shard, what went wrong? We have a new Ascian controlling Varis and furthering the war between Eorzea and Garlemald as well as hiding what hes doing in plain sight of Elidibus, but why hide it arent they all working towards the same goal? Our friends are now mostly in a coma due to someone force we have yet to see, obviously the figure we saw in todays patch, but why are they pulling the Scions there and not just us?
I believe the idea behind the ending is to be more subtle and its giving us more questions then answers leading into the 5.0 story. I for one cant wait to see what the story has to offer in the first shard and what we will have to deal with when, if?, we get back to the source.

They should have ended with black rose being released, poisoning both sides and massive deaths. In the midst, we fight and kill Elidizenos as per the trailer.
But by doing so, we set in motion a chain of domino events that echo what happened with the WoD and how shit hit the fan for them after they defeated all their Ascians.

We tipped the balance too far on the source--THEN we get spirited away to the first, leaving our allies to handle the aftermath. That's what I thought by twin calamities. We fucked shit up on the source by killing Elidibis while having to now clean up the first's mess.

Like end it on a cliffhanger again but outdo ARR's.

Also why didn't we get to see Estinien fight Zenos? We previously had Lasayle VS Ravana and Lasayle VS Garleans, Omega vs Shinryu

.... Couldn't we get an epic Estinien VS Zenos? Estinien is immensely powerful now, probably surpassing us, for having absorbed so much of Nidhogg's aether, and one shotting those cannons in Gyr Albania. Guess we will have to wait till 5.0.

How did Shadowbringers manage to go from being the best looking and most exciting expansion to being absolutely dead hype so quickly? Not even Stormblood had this much of a problem and it didn't look as promising as Shadowbringers did.

Most likely its just the squadron system in the open world and instances but with named NPCs like in ff11, they havent shown it ingame yet. In ff11 you just ask the npc about the trust system and you spawn a copy of them so don't expect anything degenerate out of it

The JP fan fest they fell flat on their faces and this patch being meh isn't helping.

It's really surprising to me that they'd let the JP Fan Fest be so horrible since they often seem to favor JP otherwise.

They could have done more to at least let on where we're going, how we're getting there, anything. They ended the story like it's still a big secret that we're going to the First, when it's literally spoiled by the expansion trailer and fanfest. There was no climax, no exposition, no plot progression, nothing.

ARR ends with a huge upheaval of the story's status quo. All your friends are missing and their status is unknown. You yourself have been branded a traitor, technically exiled from Ul'dah and forced into a corner and Ishgard is the only place left to turn. You desperately want to see what happens next.

Heavensward ends with the death of a Scion, a cataclysmic battle between Shinryu and Omega, the reveal of Lyse, and a clear setup for the next step in your journey. It's not quite as gripping as the lead-in to Heavensward, but you have a clear goal and a clear path, you want to see where it goes.

End of Stormblood, you fight Elidibus-Zenos, but no one dies and you are saved off-camera at the last minute. They don't even tell you what happened to the comrades you fought with. Elezen-Zenos appears in a "meanwhile" cutscene and apparently knows you'll be fucking off somewhere else, so he's just going to wait for you to get back. You finally meet the guy who's been chattering in your head, but he doesn't say who he his, what he wants, what he's doing, what happened to the scions, nothing. You get nothing but the instruction to visit the Crystal Tower, and that's it, that's the end of the expansion. That's super pathetic, you gotta give people SOME kind of interesting lead. There's any number of things they could have done to at least give some enticement for what happens next.

Yeah I was hyped at the fanfest, but now I'm actually worried. I feel kind of pissed from being scammed by this pointless story part after all the buildup, they really, really failed to establish the stakes of -why- we should give a shit about the first shard over fighting the war.

If this is a sign of things to come then I'm very concerned. The fact they're clearly under immense time pressure and are developing down to the wire (even the trailer isn't technically finished) bodes ill.

The trust system is currently only for Shadowbringers dungeons. My guess is that they only scripted the AI enough for those dungeons and the main purpose for them is to let people progress in the MSQ immediately without having to wait in queue.

This really sucked, especially as a expansion ending patch.

I started playing again and wanted to level a bit through Heaven on High, but apparently I need to do PotD up to 50F to unlock it.

Ala Mhigo parts: 3/10. I was expecting more, since Lyse was tolerable at the start and the first area you visit in Gyr Abania looks nice, but then you realize everything basically looks like the same outside of that area and Lyse sucks and nothing is good.

Doma Parts: 9/10. The Ruby Sea gave me a poor impression of the place, but Yanxia is alright and the Azim Steppe is great. I am biased though as I am a hopeless waifufag and my waifu, Yugiri, is in Doma.

Overall: 7/10. Patch content only picks up at 4.3, but I am hopeless, so more Yugiri and less Lyse was nice.

In general Stormblood sucked. Heavensward shat all over it and Shadowbringers can't be worse than SB because the music, trailer, and plot is already looking 10x better.

It's easy as fuck, just level a class through it. Don't bother trying solo you'll take forever if you don't have 99/99 and even then it takes way longer solo than in a party.

Shadowbringers still looks great though. For me it looks far more "Final Fantasy" that Stormblood ever did.

The whole theme of "Light isnt necessarily good / Dark isnt necessarily bad" is one thats been an FF staple and it looks like its going to be presented in a great way.

For completing the quest, you get the /makeitrain emote, and unlock new items from the 3 beast tribe vendors.

Now this is something that could work really well or could fall flat on its face

If the First Shard is treated like just another area that you can travel to and is accessible and constantly relevant to the overall game then it will be absolutely fine. If its just a place you go to; has no relevance to the main world; is just a place you fix and then leave again at the end then it will be terrible.

I imagine it will be the former. They have shown throughout the game and expansions that they are pretty good at weaving in old content to new scenarios.

You can't visit congested worlds. But once you get in you can stay as long as you want until maintenance sends you back to your home world.

For as long as you want, anytime you want, so long as the servers aren't shitting the bed. There are restrictions, though. Cannot have a house or apartment on a server that isn't your own. You can buy from the marketboard, but have to be on your own server to use retainers.

Well we'll clearly be getting lots of exposition about the light/dark conflict so it'll definitely tie into the game's overarching plot to some extent, but whether the First itself will be a lasting/important part of the story is anyone's guess. They haven't yet established why it's so important and crucial that we go there, which is pretty shit considering that's supposed to be the whole motivation to get the expansion.

Everyone assumed this would be the Garlemald expansion. Everyone assumed the fight against Garlemald would be tied in with the Warrior of Darkness stuff, which sounded great. The story has been building to it for fucking years and just in the last couple of patches it's starting to reach its crescendo. Then right at the last minute, at the absolute climax of the conflict, with all our motivations and goals set up, the clear point where our path forward in the story is established... it's revealed that everything is being put on hold and we're going on this extended detour for reasons that are left unexplained. To call it a letdown is an understatement. It's a bait-and-switch so sudden as to be dizzying.

Some people abused ungarmax, teleport hacks, or using PvP actions in PVE exploit to clear.

To balance the economy between servers, I guess? If you can buy shit from the 3rd world server, then your server has to compete with the new prices.
