As is always the case, it's a money thing.

By making a faithful adaptation they would have to credit and give money to everyone involved in the original project, since they would be following it precisely.
By making up a new story of their own just based on the property, they get to only pay for the rights and then stack on a whole new set of people that will get paid based on this new adaptation (potentially in perpetuity if the new adaptation turns into a franchise).

Basically, there's financial incentive to simply purchase the property rights and then do your own thing.

a faithful adaptation costs too much money, better to just make a shitty zombie movie, cast some female actors and claim it's a feminist triumph or something
