The game doesn't tell you that you can use the drill at a diagonal angle by pressing left/right.

If you rush like 3 hours, but that doesn't account for deaths. Probably like 6, don't forget to get all the emblems from the MA pilots for the good ending. Meeting the requirements for the good ending adds like an hour and a half.

Yes. You start the side quests by talking to the pilot once the boss mutant on their planet is dead.
