Ironman mode

Can someone explain to me why Ironman mode is a thing in video games?

Corrupted Save Files?
Corrupted Hard Drives.
Constant emphasis in the Computer Industry to always back up your data.

So why is it that a feature that limits your ability to regulate your saves incase of corruption and restricts your backup capacity, (which you can work around anyway) is even a feature of video games today?

what does ironman mode mean in video games. im only familiar with it in runescape

In games like XCOM, you can only have one save file.

thats called ironman mode? literally every game has a different word for it, for example in hollow knight its called steelsoul and in doom 4 ultra nightmare
its just stupid shit for autists

But how did it become popular?

How did literally taking away a function of a system that prevents loss of data become a feature?

artificially lengthening the duration of a singleplayer game for those few autists who want achievements. who cares really just ignore it, most people do

two reasons
1) prevents save scumming
2) dying means the end of the game

I would love to ignore it, but there's now games like Outward that seem to make it mainstream.

also, the popularity of roguelites might have something to do with it. not really the same thing as you always make permanent progress in those games but there might be a correlation

1) It's possible to not save scum on a game without ironman.
2) Save Corruption also means the end of the game, so does a power cut.
