I used to be really into the Warcraft setting and lore even though it wasn't particularly anything special, and can still dive right back into the old stuff and love it, but god damn there is nothing enjoyable about the new stuff. All this dumb faction war shit in a game so old and resilient to meaningful change that none of it can ever actually amount to anything just feels awful, and now the Alliance has werewolves and void elves running around and pandas are everywhere instead of just a cool one-off thing that is special because of its rarity and exoticism. The world map looks retarded because they've had to cram so much into it. Night Elves lost literally every single fucking cool aspect to them in an attempt to appeal to "fans" who never even played WC3 but still think they know what Tyrande is like and that Blizzard had been handling her wrong the whole time. Now Malfurion is a weak worthless cuck and Tyrande pulled some fresh new lore bullshit out of nowhere instead of building on what was already there. God damn it's so depressing to see Warcraft continuously sink to new lows year by year.

Vanilla beats out TBC on community factor by a large margin simply because no cross-realm BGs until the very end. That was really the first big dive in server quality. The only thing that would destroy a server up till then was a mass server transfer exodus.

The models were starting to show their age. Nagrand is thematically very nice, but small. Quel'Danas isle was kino. All other zones were average at best.

Meanwhile Warth had the Storm Peaks.

Storm Peaks were a real cunt to travel around. TBC gave us Eversong and Ghostlands, though. The best leveling zones ever.

meanwhile Northend had at least two zones which felt like they were placed on wrong continent, Sholazar and Grizzly Hills (and probably Howling Fjord, don't get me wrong last 2 of them are cool as fuck, but I really expected much more ice, snow and thundra).

Warcraft lore used to be quite cliche, but with a unique spin and a lot of polishing. Yes, it's the same old tropes, but the attention to details in the delivery and the quality of dialogues/aesthetics made up for it.

The first zone was nice but uniformally orange
The big swamp was just so much wasted potential (why the heck is Vashj draining it).
Nagrand and Terrokar were okay, although the bird race and the Auchenaï were underused
Netherend and the valley with the black temple were nice, though I think the valley was a bit too uniformally black

Yeah, agree, a lot of stuff was underused or lack of writting (seriously, fuck TBC for what they did with Illidan trio)

I play wc2 when I was 8 or something. I know the whole "orcs enslaved dragons/deathwing helped them" lore, I just remember that zone as a bunch of differently-coloured strips of lands seperated with big spikes. It didn't feel right to me.
The Illidan trio got butchered. Vashj does nothing, Kael becomes a bitchy demon femboy (although it was foreshadowed at the end of tft Blood Elf campaign), and Illidan himself should have died on Northrend.
On another note, I just can't imagine so many people played wow without realising wc3 exists. I miss when the MMO was still inspired by the RTS.
