>almost TWENTY (20) years old
>still the best tactical shooter ever made
What went so right?
Almost TWENTY (20) years old
I'm still pissed off Bohemian took it down from GOG.com.
It's five dollars, one dollar on sale. What's bad about it being on Steam? You can just pirate it anyway, if you really don't want to use Steam.
It was never on gog. your thinking about Arma 1 which is different game.
Arma: Cold War Assault is the same game.
>What's bad about it being on Steam?
I don't like being forced to use a client.
It's about.. how it is called? Ah, freedom of choice.
No it's not man. I have the game from gog and it's not Arma: Cold War.
It was ARMA: Armed Assault.
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising was better
It's a damn shame that NPC AI was steadily increased in difficulty as patches were released, some of the levels in campaign are brutal now thanks to it
That being said, ARMA 1 as an introduction to the arma series is still an excellent 10/10 game that captures its setting in time and place so perfectly it's infinitely enjoyable
If you want to dip your toes into what arma can be, play arma 1 for a while
>What went so right?
It's a cold war gone hot scenario military sandbox set in the 80s, when American military aesthetic was at its peak.
I'm talking about Arma Cold War Assault on Steam. It is the exact same game, just rereleased as an official Arma title.
People like you are why tactical shooters are dead outside of Arma, and Arma's dying too (as evidenced by the casualization of Arma 3).
I think modern military aesthetics in general just peaked in the 80s
Then enjoy sitting back and being unable to enjoy games these days
Elitism is a double-edged sword, you can act better for not having it but you're literally walking out of the playground because the equipment was made purple
they made a campaign that wasn't shit, that's literally it.
ARMA 2 and 3 with the same campaign and cold war packs really show how much the base games lack in that regard. OFP wasn't really a shinning example of subtle, smart writing(or voice acting, for that matter) but it actually complimented the game because you were a shit-kicking private and the narrative AND the gameplay of the game opened up to you together. The missions appreciated that you started off bad at the game and you were transitioning from a "gamey" war to "real" war and even the missions that were just a regular patrol felt like serious shit.
Games like this NEED to introduce themselves like that, make you kick off as a newbie and not as a super elite blackops operator glow in the dark giga nigga. OFP did that, and also made it compelling by following the spikes in difficulty with the beats of the story, how you were right on fucked and left behind on your own just like the rebels, and how when you finally got the vehicles and gear you needed and could turn the tables on the enemy the power trip actually felt like a reward.
it's not about elitism. steam forces updates that breaks mods. this in turn breaks missions. arma needs mods because blowhemia can't make good base content to save their lives. they have to make shit up because of licensing or something.
true true
>jeep doesn't start with G, you meathead!
>gog release date: 2008
damn gog is older than i thought
what the FUCK happened to tatical shooters. They were everywhere in the late 90's to early 2000's
Now they are virtually non-existent
Well, I hope you like the future in which Epic Games Store rules PC gaming.
Wrong Delta Force 2 is the best.
ok, ok, ok, it's not jeep, it's grass
Reminder that Rainbow Six Siege is considered a "tactical shooter" in 2019. If it ever comes out, Ready or Not is probably going to be a lot more casual and forgiving than old Rainbow Six/SWAT/Ghost Recon.
publishers figured out that the gaming populace preferred brainlet shit like kill streaks and instant respawn playgrounds where the points are made up and nothing matters.
>talking of scared, what's that stink? You filled your shorts, Kozlowski?
Literally too hard/boring for normies that need explosions in their face every 30 seconds or else they drop the game.
Not even comparable. In Delta Force, you're a lone wolf ultra badass super seekrit special operative. NATO took interest in VBS for a reason.
>I don't know, Fowley. Here, wanna take a look?
Name one memorable quote from Arma: Armed Assault/Arma 2/Arma 3.
Man Swat 4 was already pretty watered down from Swat 3 back then, games CAN be streamlined and still be good. If it's got the god tier gunplay of say, Insurgency Sandstorm and AI good enough to fuck you up it'll do alright.
You said tactical shooters in general not team based tactical shooters also i don't give a shit about muh realism.
>tfw friend continuously begs me to play Ghost Recon Wildlands
>tfw never want to because every time I play it, I'm reminded of the dead carcass Ubisoft is propping up with the Ghost Recon name
>friend doesn't understand, thinks the game is fantastic.
>the only other Ghost Recon game he ever played was Ghost Recon Future Soldier
>tfw just want to go back to Original Ghost Recon
>i don't give a shit about muh realism
What exactly appeals to you about tactical shooters then? I'm genuinely asking. I guess it would explain your shit taste.
Strategy games, shooters, simulators, racers, everything was at its peak before the damn 6th console generation.
Having low HP and big maps doesn't make your game a "tactical shooter". If it's not team based, what actual tactics can you employ?
>3 o clock, enemy, shilka, 200
>Oh no... 6 is down
>damn 7 is down
>3 is down
>damn 4 is down (the RPG guy)
>1 is down
>this is 2 taking command, ill say again, 2 taking command, out
>5 is down
>Oh no... 5 is down
>try to run to the RPG to get it
>2 is down
>BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT
>war is bad man, serously: A war general from WW2
>start over from zero after an hour of gameplay because you needed to kill that fucking shilka to reach the checkpoint save
this is why you always steal the smoke grenades, they actually WORK.
>start over from zero after an hour of gameplay because you needed to kill that fucking shilka to reach the checkpoint save
shift, - on the numpad, then type savegame
You're wasting your time, they're a Valvefag.
It's just a game me and my friends played and enjoyed back in the day maybe you should try making some friends.
>trick friends into playing Ghost Recon multiple times over the years
>wtf where are the weapon models??? i'm out
d-don't go...
@455819338
2/10
Yeah, this must be the first time I actually found an actual Steamtard (not the poster you're repling to, by the way).
im in the same boat lad, to be fair wildlands is pretty fun to fuck around in with mates. Just make sure you put it on the highest difficulty
>never used it ever
Fuck my life... But thank you.
You can only save once, and its for the last quarter, not for the start of that shitfest.
I remember that from the mission you do with Mike Wazowski (james gustovski) on the mountain and then go with tanks, but because of that shilka your tanks end up ded and your repair trucks destroyed, i ended up against 1 shilka and 2 T80's with a tank that couldnt move but could fire.
Ended up stealing an enemy RPG because tank crew dosent carry any, neither the guys on the truck, and the shilka blew up the bodies so far that i couldnt find the infantry that were with us.
>it's not about elitism. steam forces updates that breaks mods
>implying they're going to release a game breaking update for a twenty year old game
Are you retarded or just baiting?
>You can only save once
Unless you pause the game and press shift, - on the numpad, then type savegame. This way you can save as many times as you like.
i'm talking about modern arma you dumb faggot.
bohemia changes meaningless shit all the time that breaks what little worthwhile content there is for the game.
do you not know what a mod is?
all the suffering for not knowing that.
FUCK
>playing Arma 3
You brought it on yourself.
OPF has some fucking awesome music and the atmosphere was butt-clenchingly tight at times
>PAPA_BEAR: "PAPA BEAR HERE - PRIORITY. I REPEAT, PRIORITY. MORTON IS UNDER HEAVY FIRE. WE'RE FALLING BACK. EVAC ZONE OVERRUN. OUT."
>PAPA_BEAR: "WE'RE OUTTA TIME. FINAL EVAC FLIGHT LEAVING NOW. SORRY GUYS... OUT."
>PAPA_BEAR: "ALL REMAINING UNITS, THIS IS PAPA BEAR. WE'VE GOT A NEW EVAC POINT FOR YOU - AT Ea 64. OUT."
>PAPA_BEAR: "PAPA BEAR TO ANYONE LEFT ON EVERON - TRY TO GET TO THE EVAC POINT AT Ea 64. WE'RE SENDING IN A RESCUE TEAM. OUT"
>PAPA_BEAR: "ANYONE LEFT ON EVERON. REPEAT. ALL REMAINING TROOPS ON EVERON. TRY TO GET TO THE EVAC POINT AT Ea 64. GOOD LUCK. GOD BE WITH YOU."

I'm glad to see a thread about best game of all time, at least to me here.
OFP is such a fucking beast of a simulator military shooter game that has it all. The campaign is fucking masterpiece, the execution, atmosphere, soundtrack, missions, game and gunplay, everything is just top notch.
Something that the later ARMA games did not capture at all.
Whilst OFP holds dear spot to me in my heart, ARMA 1 was fine, 2 I ignored and 3 I couldn't find interest at all to get around playing it.
They just lost that vision that made OFP the best..
Also, sniping vehicles with LAW launcher from half a kilometer away was super fun.
After Montignac/Strange Meeting was fucking /k/ino.
>They just lost that vision that made OFP the best
Check out the Cold War Rearmed mod for Arma 2. Ports over the Cold War Crisis and Resistance campaigns, all the islands, and has some pretty good 80's units made from scratch. It's basically the only way I can play Arma 2.
i agree but good luck maintaining interest in arma 2 for enough people to have 20-30 person missions in 2019. That's the sweet spot imo. Any less and you don't have enough people for a platoon. Much more and you have too many teams and shit gets bogged down and mission design becomes less flexible/granular.
Old game, gud. New game, bad.
Thanks, I will.
>best
>overrated as shit campaign that plays more like your random mission pack on armaholic
it's the second best in the series but only because it doesn't have much competition, the campaign is nothing special and the content itself without modding is kinda lacking, even with the Resistance xpac
>only got into it with 3 and a little bit of 2
>now can't stand to go back to even more awkward controls than ArmA 3 already has
I wish someone would port the other campaigns over to 3. You even already have all the assets in the CUP mods.
Grass?
It's gun, isn't it, I saw you looking at it.
too much effort to recreate all the scripts
It's a genre that only works on PC and when consoles became completely dominant in the 00's all the PC exclusive genres died with it.
These days the mere thought of developing a game that's PC exclusive makes major publishers recoil in disgust because PC gamers have been pretty okay with console sloppy seconds at this point.
Surely after 10-20 years we can take the mission files and copy them over. I know they're still using the same scripting language from at least Cold War Assault based on what I've seen on the wiki
I think your a little confuse there fren
>playing OFP with Yea Forums back in 2012 for a month straight every night with impressively autistic amount of mods
rip Yea Forumsirgindown
dude i'm still in Yea Forumsirgin down
sadly i can't really game in organized stuff anymore due to being stuck with a very shit PC and very unforgiving hours, but i'm all for bringing it back.
Just pirate it then.
ALL
FORM LINE
>>impressively autistic amount of mods
Happen to have a list? Or just any worth recommending these days?
I remember WGL being the shit back in the day but I haven't really looked at the OFP mod scene for a good decade or so
Arma 3 had a pretty long campaign but no scenarios.
I missed scenarios
The showcases aren't half bad
>EW
pure tactical shooter kino
HOORAH MARINE
LETS FUCK EACH OTHER IN THE BUNKS RIGHT NEXT TO THE CORPSE OF ONE OF OUR SQUAD MEMBER WHO COULDN'T KEEP HIS PTSD AND RAMPANT DEPRESSION IN CHECK AND BLEW IS BRAINS OUT
this
>download 40k for Arma 3
>jarring asf because the maps don't fit the setting
>lags like shit too
It'd probably work better as a battlefront mod, someone get on this.
