And thing was, when he did the assembling, he added shadows, and made the entries "feel" like they were a part of the background. That is very different from taking a windows xp wallpaper and adding pictures on it using MSpaint

Kujalla hasn't delivered for a while, I assume he's busy with actual real life stuff. There's plenty of other artists capable of drawing a decent background, but nobody can give you a background it there's no consensus on the collab theme yet. Asking the thread for the theme is the logical thing to do. If the thread isn't asked some autist will jump the gun and start shitposting against collab and complaining why didn't artists ask the thread what to do. Summer and Halloween collabs were great, Christmas one was a shitstorm with pushing two different collabs because someone didn't like the other one but it still turned out alright. So now shut up with shitposting and give ideas, I want the collab and if it's necessary I'll draw the damn background no matter how much I suck at it.

That's kind of the approach collabs have been. But, if I'm udnerstanding "exquisite corpse", you'd have situations where an artist tries to reserve a spot or sequence, only to either not deliver for that spot, or change their mind. So yes, its a pain in the ass to manage, and its easier to just keep it free-form, with a basic theme. And the guy organizing it figures out which image will go where.
