This doesn't make the 5th better, I played all 4 before and find most of OP's criticisms right. This only resolves the complaint about the story, which anyway has always been mediocre and barely worth paying attention to.

The only good thing DMC has going for it story-wise is absolute balls to the walls cuhrazy and anger = power. It's not anything to write home about and the story is more of a device to justify the existence of the game itself. That said, I enjoy the story immensely just because I love the characters and everything plays out like an anime.

Sure but the defenders need to stop pretending like knowing the story of the first 4 would entirely change OP's experience. I find that the gameplay is just not as rewarding or enjoyable as DMC 3 and Bayonetta, the atmosphere isn't as interesting as DMC 1 or Bayo. That said, I get easily bored of these games nowadays so I guess if I really liked the genre I would see it as satisfactory.

I liked Bayonetta 1 and 2 a lot, especially since I only played them after DmC came out and felt like the death of the franchise for me, but I've been hearing this a lot lately and it baffles me.
I mean, I guess you can say that on Easy or Normal, DMC5 lets you button mash to win, but Bayo does the same thing except with one more aspect that trivializes the game even more.

Taste in atmosphere and environments is subjective, but sure, I can give you that considering DMC1's atmosphere was top notch. But I can't see how you would think the gameplay itself is not as rewarding or enjoyable as DMC3 unless you're one of those super DMC3 players who know the game inside out and prefer the little quirks in that engine. And seeing as you like Bayonetta better, I sincerely doubt that.

This. I own the first Bayonetta and haven't finished it because it feels like lackluster compared to DMC3, 4 and 5. It just wasn't as engaging to keep spamming dodge without any risk involved compared to DMCs juggling and knowing when to retreat.
