I think people need to realize that Melee's development was an extremely different time for Smash. It was when the series was still in its experimenal grassroots stage.

But now the series has become far larger and the expectations/standards of character inclusions have become much higher. I think it's safe to say that if characters like Ice Climbers and Mr. Game & Watch weren't included in Melee, they would of never been playable in later games would just be assist trophies at best.

Admittedly, Fire Emblem is a different case, though what I was saying is that Smash made a perfect introduction to it (although not the main reason it was released in the west, advance wars success also played a part). Still, the inclusion of Fire Emblem characters in Smash made the franchise more known outside of Japan and made it easier for people to recognize it when it was on the shelves, the problem in the 00s was that they released a lot of games at the same time and perma-death made a lot of casuals stay away from it, the fact that the last two games before awakening were remakes and the last one wasn't released outside of Japan didn't help (though honestly, the waifus in Awakening probably saved the series more than casual mode).

my only remaining hope for smash is the mii costume. outside of smash, i hope he makes a return elsewhere. i just want him back, smash or not. he has so much potential that was never used (unlike mallow, who got a whole arc and his fullest potential realized).

god, same. it's such a charming game. sure, the later mario rpgs are better, but smrpg was great for its time and is still fun to play today. its characters are so charming, too, not just geno. mallow is adorable, yaridovich was cool, jonathan jones is awesome, croco is a hoot, frogfucius is based, etc. such a shame that a cast like that ends up getting the shaft, and that'd honestly apply whether they belonged to square or not, given nintendo's track record.
