The game is not dead, but it will be in the next 5 months.
Why?
Because the last relevant piece of original game content they released was last summer.
Almost 8 months later, we're still playing recycled events\gamemodes with outsourced skins, with two new "heroes" and a new map that is pure visual gonorrhea.
They didn't fix shit.
Goats has been the meta for almost a year now.
They just don't care.
And when asked about, they reply with "we're working on a lot of new secret things that we cannot talk about".

The game is easily at its lowest since 2016 in terms of game balance and gameplay variety.

TF2 has players, but what it lacks is quality, fun, updates, or any remaining soul.

Why 5 months specifically? It's obviously in some state of decline if not stagnation but I don't think its as close to dead as we think. I get 5 minute q's in solo qp once in awhile but I'm not sure how competitive is faring (haven't played in a couple seasons.

Overwatch probably has about 60k players on at any given time, but they split them between 3 platforms and 5 regions and a ton of skill ratings and game modes. I can sit for 30 minutes in a GM queue to queue against the only other 15 players in my bracket that are online.

It's horribly unbalanced, it's super bloated and bogged down performance wise, even when Valve did give a shit about it it was getting awful updates and bad changes, half the people playing are either bots or on some retarded Minecraft server, and every single map has the exact same playstyle with the exact same trick and exact same progression of events. There's no variety, no tactics, no strategy, no thought.

I'll admit, it was fun for a long time for me, but were I to go back and have it all fresh again, knowing what I know, I wouldn't have fucking touched it. It's literal trash.

I've played attack torb, won, and ended with all golds multiple times. Skill is big on how you do.
In contrast TF2 you can be the best engineer in the world but on a map not specifically made for engineer you will always without exception be dunked on by the optimal classes.
And even on maps made for him those optimal classes will still be better than you.
In OW I can play torb if I want to try to hamper an enemy push and harass their squishies.
In TF2 I can play engi if I want to fuck around and do nothing.
This is the fundamenetal difference and why as someone who's played TF2 since 2007, OW is a superior game.

Yeah but the game has always struggled with a meta. Because League babbies and Dota dorks can't play a game without having some pros tell them who to play. As soon as a comp scene formed everyone rushed to the forums and started defining a meta for a game that didn't need it. Whenever the devs change the game, everyone complains because they have to learn a new meta. The devs come right and say that non-comp players trying to play the game according to comp metas is stupid idea. Players whined and argued back.

The game should have been purely competitive or not have a comp mode at all. The fanbase is absolutely retarded and needs a list of acceptable heroes fed to them. When devs change things to make non-meta heroes viable in the meta culture, they get blamed for breaking the game. There was a literal mental meltdown when Mercy was reworked so everyone would stop making the game all about her. It must be extremely frustrating being a dev for such a shitty community. And because it's Activision, that makes it much worse. Everyone expects blizzard to do what the community wants because of WoW patches. For a good part of its lifetime TF2 was the -only- option for class based arena shooting, and the very few alternatives were either really bad or too old to appeal to a larger audience. Note the exodus of a lot of veteran players between 2012 and 2014, called the "Cash Out", when more options started coming to market.

Not saying good or bad on TF2 itself, but if your only option for entertainment is shit, it's still your only option and you'll still play it. When I was a wee m8 I had only a few discs of mostly shitty games to play on my Windows 98. I still played the fuck out of them.

I'm already nostalgic for pre competitive Overwatch to be honest. Gonna sound like a boomer here but things WERE much more simple then.
