I haven't read any other light novels so I can't put them in comparison with Slayers writing, but the writing itself is really basic, 12 year old reading material. It's all in the first person from Lina's perspective which is the biggest thing. The first 8 novels were adapted into the anime, the last 7 have never had an adaption. It's not an even cut though, Slayers is based on volumes 1 and 3, Next takes bits and pieces of 2, 4, 6 and all of 7 & 8. Revolution is based partly on 5. It's not hard to get your hands on the fan translations of the last 7 volumes, but the quality of the translations is not very good.
Personally, I'd say that the anime (Slayers and Next) is the definitive verson of Slayers.
