I'd say Van was the best villain in the series.

The problem is that there's plenty of blame to go around. But the party didn't want to acknowledge their own mistakes. Or that the people they trusted were monsters who were at least partly responsible for what happened.

Case in point the Luke's uncle and father knew what was going to happen and they sent Luke there hoping that he'd not only destroy Azeriuth but also that he'd die in the process so they could start a war with Malkuth.

Hell Luke wasn't even in control of his body when it happened, and the only reason why Vaan was able to control Luke's body is because Asch decided to act high and mighty and decided to force Luke to use Hyper resonance on the boat to kill Tear. Luke pointing out that he's not to blame is actually a factual truth.

Asch is the original Luke is the clone, and it's Asch who endangers the cause with his insistence on not working with the party.

Yep, they both his uncle and his father on separate occasions even tell Luke to his face that they were using him just to start a war that they were prophecized to win. Luke's father even going so far as to admit that he's not Luke's father, Luke was just a tool to him. Guy wanted to murder Luke's father and the king for it and it's hard to disagree with his reasoning.

The party was aware that Luke wasn't fully at fault, especially Anise, Asch, and Jade. They found out about Luke's true age right at the time that Azeriuth happened. They had no excuse, they blame him because it's easy.

As Guy pointed out to Natalia they were all at fault and so they were wrong for trying to have Luke take all the blame.

Jade admits that the only reason he didn't say anything was because he's genuinely a sociopath and thought that it was too much work to explain shit.

Jade never really gets shit on despite being a huge asshole and only mildly backing off by the end of the game. It's what makes him entertaining but he absolutely caused lots of their problems and just sort of shrugs it off.

It only works if they have the body to pull it off.

this is one of the reasons why I find the story really frustrating in hindsight, but also why I enjoy it
the story is basically a bunch of deeply flawed people trying to fix their mistakes, they do things that are pretty terrible and try to deny and deflect blame on themselves, it only adds to the tragedy
my only problem is that some characters get off much easier than others, like Jade and Anise, when I think there really should have been a moment when they get torn down over the shit they pulled

Because as his sister pointed out, Jade is an actual sociopath who didn't understand that torturing small animals and people, and creating replicas were bad until his teacher told him so in the first instance, and Peony kicked his shit in the second.

I love how there are people that say Jade is the best Tales character in the series. Hell there are people that said he should have been the main character. The fuck is wrong with these people, did we play the same game?

Jade gets torn down in a sidequest and later on admits that he was partially responsible for Azeriuth and Luke getting tricked. And that he should have paid more attention to Luke after choral castle.

Jade at the very least is better than Anise, Asch, and Natalia because he actually admits to being responsible for Azeriuth and even gets annoyed by Asch's constant bitching.

After Luke tells Jade about Vaan controlling his body, Jade loses his patience with Asch.

But he can't carry a story, the whole point of him is that he's a genius sociopath attempting to live a normal life.

On top of that it was Tears fault Luke even had to leave the castle, and a spy who most likely told Mohs everything about the party. And Guy was planning to murder him. Talk about a bunch of dysfunctional dicks.

Oh and Jade. But he's a self proclaimed sociopath so at least he has an excuse.

I mean no one really straight up calls Jade out for causing basically the whole plot to kick off but he does get some shit from Peony and slowly realizes himself that he did cause a good amount of shit happening whether it be replicas being a thing or Luke being tricked by Van, though you only see this in a sidequest. The only people in Kimlasca that Guy even respected are Luke, Luke's Mom, and Natalia those three are the only reason why he didn't through with his revenge,

I have no nostalgic connection to this game, as I didn't play it until the 3ds version, but Luke easily became one of my favorite protags in the series right next to Yuri. Unlike Yuri though, he's got a lot more demons to contend with, guy's a literal 7 year old despite his appearance, and way too much is asked of him, and he's expected to deal with way too much for his age. The fact that he comes out alright in the end is really satisfying. Best boy.
