The worst thing about Cross is that its plot is complete garbage by its own merits even without the connections to Trigger.

People love to harp on the Chrono Trigger stuff that's largely at the end of the game but it really fell apart as early as the end of Viper Manor when it stopped following Radical Dreamers' outline.

He's like Frog, he is a human first who got turned into a frog creature, he could have had that scar before he was changed.

It only takes a few hours to finish and it's a very unique experience.

Serge isn't a silent protagonist in it, so you get a lot from his point of view. He's actually character that has a lot of depth, especially when it comes to Kid. If you liked the dynamic between Serge and Kid in Chross, you'll love Radical Dreamers.

Parallel universe where Kid, Serge, and a guy named Gil have to steal the Frozen Flame from Lynx's mansion. It plays like a text adventure, so you might be turned off. If not, there's multiple endings to get and the writting is pretty good.

Parallel universe from Cross, with some of the prototype concepts executed differently. It's about Serge, Kid, and a sorcerer called Magil invading Vipor Manor, a ruin owned by General Lynx, to steal the Frozen Flame.
It's a visual novel with some rudimentary VN formatted combat.

My only complaints about CC are that it alludes to the idea that Crono, Marle, & Lucca are dead (which makes 0 sense considering the rather recently-made drawings of the entire CT cast in Lucca's Orphanage shortly before Mother/FATE/Lynx torched it - Dalton allegedly killed Crono & Marle when he stole the Masamune 4 years prior), the poor redesigns of the CT cast (specifically Schala), and that the entire final hour or two of the game is an exposition dump.
On the other hand, it does neatly reveal how Marle is related to the Zeal Kingdom & how Schala's pendant became a family heirloom of the Guardia Kingdom/Royal line, even if it doesn't really reveal HOW that happened (beyond the obvious "Project Kid" temporal experiment used to enact CC).
Bah, I'd still love a 3rd game, but I have a sick feeling a lot of the ideas for a "Chrono Break" were used by Final Fantasy XIII-2...

Nah, she was part of Balthasar's Project Kid time experiment designed to force/trick a corrupted Schala to create Kid so Serge could go back in time to save Kid so they could both free Schala. Well, the problem is it CAN'T exist in a vacuum. At least not when disc 2 happens. It tries pretty hard to force itself into the Chrono canon. But by doing so, it recontextualizes all the events of CT in a way it didn't really need to - turning a kid-friendly time traveling adventure into a navel gazing fest about the nature of consequences and causality. It's too convoluted and weird for its own good.

I love both, but I think I lean more towards Cross if I had to be honest with you. Toriyama's art style is great in CT and why I loved it (and why I wanted a CT anime to exist so badly)

The Lavos that strikes the "Earth" in CT had decided that the proto-humans (Ayla, etc.) would be the best creatures to allow to flourish so it would strengthen and create spawn of itself to repeat the process on some other world. This indicates strongly that Lavos is able to both see the future AND see multiple futures/realities.
Now, the Lavos that became the Time Devourer was an early spawn of the original, that got trapped in a temporal portal with Schala and at least a part of the Mammon Machine - a device design to empower Lavos. Over time (pun intended), the Spawn would eventually become so twisted and powerful that it would exceed all other Lavos/Spawn and be able to destroy space & time itself. The CT DS version pretty well spells this all out.
As far as a Planet Lavos... anything's possible. They gotta originate somewhere.

I'm not going to lie, I missed out on CT my whole life and have been a long time FF fantasy fanboy. I played every FF from 5 onwards since I was a kid, and only played CT a few months ago. My nostalgia should all be for FF but even I see CT as a better game. The way they do encounters feels 100x better than FF random encounters and the battles feel way more interesting. Each of your characters gets only one element, and enemies actually get stunned and weakened and made vulnerable by hitting them with the proper element, or they counter attack if hit with the improper element. In CT you get into a battle and you have to attack the enemies in the proper order with the proper element or you'll do 0 damage and get counter attacked unnecessarily. In FF you have one black mage who casts whatever element the enemy is weak against from his list of every elemental spell and it does slightly more damage than all your other guys attacks. There's no unique responses to certain elements and there's no one who's invulnerable to physical or magic, it's just do damage or do slightly more damage. CT is unironically the better battle system by far and I'm biased towards FF

I mean, what people consider "edgy" is always going to be subjective, but nothing about Cross' story is particularly shocking, and it all follows the same theme of ripple effects and dimension hopping to save the day. The only difference is Cross' take isn't as consistently upbeat as Trigger's.
Time travel in fiction has existed for a long time, as has the idea that you might not actually be altering timelines, only creating new ones. Every plot development in Cross can follow logically from what Trigger set up, the only issue is a lot of people miss it because the game never really comes out and explains what's happening, only leaves subtle hints and indecipherable journal entries. People see the CT crew's time ghosts and assume they died. People read Lucca's letter and assume the journey in CT was pointless.

I like Chrono Trigger plenty but honestly, if you've played Live-A-Live, there's no way you can really look at Trigger and honestly believe it deserved more praise.

It's ugly, the sprites are small, the monster sprites never move, the story sucks and the characters aren't interesting. I throw some of that critique to FF5 and 6.

To me it was far more advanced as a video game, CT felt generic in comparison, and it got a 4 year head start. They came compiled in the same disc so the comparing is valid.

Isn't metacritic something after Cross's time? There were two other ones I remember back then, one of them being GameRankings. And like I said Cross's score was either at 97 or 98 on one of them.

To be honest, as someone who thinks time travel is often a terribly executed convoluted trope, I thought Trigger handled it really well. But I liked Cross's way of dealing with it more. Just 2 separate realities.

Not sure, but Cross is on there with a score of 94. The DS version of Chrono Trigger, which is honestly the definitive version of Chrono Trigger at this point, carries a metascore of 92.

Not just the definitive version but also hindsight with all its reputation. The older you go back for Cross, the higher the score. On wiki it's state it got a perfect 10 by gamespot, only 1 of about 10 ever. Back when 10/10s were extremely rare and always a huge deal. Reviewers were also legit back then too.

Radical Dreamers is a SNES Satellaview (a literal sattellite peripheral for the snes that let you download games). It was a direct sequel to Chrono Trigger staring Serge, Kidd, and Gil (who was actually Magus) sneaking into the same mansion in Chrono Cross to find the same Frozen Flame from Chrono Cross. It does not hide it's connection to Chrono Trigger in anyway. The trio even fight Lynx.

Ultimately, since nobody had the SNES Satellaview, they remade the game into Chrono Cross for the PS1

Said it's not a reason *not* to play it. Meaning it shouldn't turn you away, and I meant an original run-through. Also, I don't really remember mutliple endings. I thought there was just mayyybe 3 at most, but a definitive best ending which doesn't matter how many characters you get. You just needed all of a certain item and to beat the final boss a certain way. The problem is if you don't, there;s like no ending at all. I feel like most people got that ending which might explain some people's issue with the game because the true ending is beautiful including the song in my top quote. I forgot who it was that said they cried upon beating the game when the song played. I think Mitsuda.

Chrono Cross features twelve endings, two of which can be had on a normal playthrough (the other ten being accessible through a New Game +). Similar to Chrono Trigger's, Cross's endings reflect on humorous situations or what might have happened if the game had truly ended at the point a particular ending was accessed. Because of this, the endings seem to fall outside the realm of canon, but the more serious endings do offer insight and character development at times.

Weird that I didn't know that. I definitely checked Gamewinners a lot for this game. I remember when I printed out the entire guide for all the characters. Never got around to trying for them all. I've been wanting to replay this game for a long ass time but for some reason lost it.

It even has the same ending as Chrono Trigger where it's a developer room type thing and you can walk around and talk to everyone that made the game.

Is it weird that I'm not a fan of so many endings? I feel like it makes all of them less impactful/meaningful. Of course a designated canon ending helps, but I think the max should be 3.

And it should also be something obvious that changes the ending, like a very important decision. Not some random requirement like some endings are.

After playing FFVI, I cannot trust anything that goes into double digits with its party members. I understand that the only way they can flesh out party members with 16 characters (at least I assume there's 16 based off the space when you actually get to pick you party for once, 8 per row with 2 columns) is by constantly changing your team for you, or removing certain characters or forcing certain characters, whatever, but it was annoying as fuck and made me drop the game only like 6 or 7 hours in, on top of other gripes.
Sure, you say a bunch are missable in Cross, but even if say 25 were missable, 19 is still too damn many.

The other thing that puts me off from Cross is that its supposed to be a sequel to Trigger, but from what I remember hearing, they basically killed off all of Trigger's characters except Magus. There's literally no value in it for me if all of the characters I gave a shit about are dead.
