Baby park is only good in Double Dash, it's nearly pointless in all the other games. The entire point of the course is to have a cramped clusterfuck of all the special items like bowser shells, fireballs and yoshi eggs fucking everything up, which other games just don't have

The MKDS version of Baby Park has to be the biggest bastardization of the original out of any retro course.

I find Sunshine Airport to be incredibly boring and am baffled that it always seemed to get at least 8 votes when it showed up back when I played MK8.

Pic related is my least favorite, at least in 8, just because of how weirdly staggered the last section is; the last lap has that very long stretch with almost no chance to come back if you get hit at the start of it

The only time you hear anyone talk about SNES MK in a good light is RR and some of the Ghost Valley maps, and people only like Ghost maps because of the shortcuts in which case if you have a boner for that sort of shit just play MK Wii.

I choose to believe that MK8's real RR is the N64's one.

Some of them make great early game tracks. GBA Mario Circuit in 8 is fantastic. Simple, but fun. Has a nice classic contrast to MK8s usual aesthetic too.

They added fucking guardrails on the inside, plus they neutered the items. There's no more ruckus from the opposite end of the track, which was what made Baby Park in Double Dash so chaotic in the first place.

My vote goes to Dry Dry Desert. It was just a so-so map in Double Dash, but it really sucks in MK8 when there’s nothing interesting or unique about it (especially related to anything MK8 introduces, like bumper boosts and anti-grav). No idea why they brought this one back. Sand levels just suck in general.

Worst part is that it used to be space themed, they changed it to a desert for no reason. I really liked a lot of MK8's reimaginings of retro tracks, but that was definitely one of the lesser ones. Same with making DS Wario Stadium take place at day instead of night.

Such wasted potential. I have to agree with Baby Park unfortunately, I love it in DD due to the absolute chaos but that chaos isn't really present in this iteration. The anti-gravity negates the issue of bumping into other racers and the items aren't nearly as large or dangerous. Plus, it was funny watching your partner cling on to the back of the kart in DD after getting hit.

Sky Garden was my jam back in the MKDS days.

Desert Hills is fucking stupid, I hate the fucking dark sand that makes no sense as an out of bounds and is way too close to the track

It's the least offensive Desert track, actually attempting to give it a sense aesthetic and make it look somewhat interesting. The map layout is also fine too.

SNES Rainbow Road is kino, and so is the music. It's a lot of fun in 8 because it's one of the few courses that are a genuine shitshow due to it being fair but hard rather than being bullshit. Doing a perfect run and cutting corners on that stage feels amazing.

The zero-G gameplay probably removes most of the fun that track had.

CTGP adds new courses and modes and while you will see Funky Kong Flamerunner and Daisy Mach Bikes alot, the community loves using dumbass vehicles like the Piranha Prowler for fun

The SNES tracks usually don't make very good tracks as retro courses. They are made far too big and wide. This combined with the lack of slopes and stuff makes them pretty boring. However, SNES tracks in their original game are fucking awesome. Everything is a lot narrower and tighter, actually makes for exciting intense racing.

Honestly, Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart is interchangeable with AM2R as my favorite fan game of all time, and I had low expectations going in. I don't like the new friction changes ruining drift boost shortcuts over rough terrain in 1.0.4. That took the wind out of my sails trying to speed run Green Hills Zone. Regardless, it's absolutely worth playing.

Desert levels in general tend to be boring for me.
If I had to pick a specific level though, it'd probably be Dolphin Shoals. Turns are too tight and overall something about it doesn't gel with me.

It really wasn't, it was easy, it could take up to 8-9 minutes normally and it had no variety, the reason most people remenber it is because of that jump that lets you skip a great portion of the track.

Smash Ultimate is "New" in that it's a Dream Match type game and so put more emphasis on revamping characters and stages.

It's more like if a new Mario Kart came out with a majority of the old tracks revamped to MK8 standards, but only had one new cup to compensate.

Maple Treeway & Grumble Volcano made the Star Cup in Wii so good, Koopa Cape was fine if a bit boring and Daisy Circuit had some good layout overall, definitely the best cup in that game.

I'm 33. MK64's Rainbow Road has always been complete shit. The entire track having a fucking railing is more than enough reason for me to condemn it. Rainbow Road is supposed to be the ultimate test of your Mario Kart skills, there's no skill in driving along an absurdly long track where there's zero danger of falling off.

Fuck no, this is my favorite track in the series because it takes elements from Toad highway from 64 and expands upon them. The course design is so great you can predict the car locations by maintaining your speed. The aesthetics also remind me a mountain pass so I always liked to blast eurobeat while playing it.

Heavy weights are broken in 8 and even more so in deluxe somehow. It freaking sucks too

I have no idea what was going on for the majority of MK7's music, especially because the composer is apparently the same person who did MK64's music. Maybe Retro just had very little quality control in terms of the soundtrack. The music was really almost Sonic Chronicles tier in the way it sounds like someone's just mindlessly slapping an electric keyboard half the time.

Rainbow Road 64 is legitimately the only track in 8 I'll never willing pick. It's terrible to play on. I enjoy the 200cc version but it's too damn rare online like 200cc in general.

Kinda agree with this guy The problem with them adding on more and more of these gimmicks (gliders/underwater/antigravity) is that they'll all have to keep being brought over to the next game so that classic stages from 7 and 8 can return without being gimped. But honestly, I'd be fine with seeing those things disappear so that they can focus on something completely different and fresh. After all, we'd be 9 games in by now, and I know it's fucking Mario Kart and all, but they can't expect us to keep eating up the same slop without doing anything to set each entry apart. In my opinion, MK8 already feels enough like MK7 2.0 as it is.

Also I'd be completely fine with them removing buildable karts. I fucking hate building a kart before every race. It's the complete antithesis of the pick-up-and-play multiplayer experience that the old Mario Kart games did so well. It just bores casuals who just want to get onto the game, and it makes tryhards think too carefully about their stat spread, and creates an uncomfortable rift when you're a semi-tryhard sitting down to play with your casual friends/family. At least dial it back to the Double Dash/DS/Wii style of choosing your own kart without having to put together parts. And why the fuck even bother letting us pick gliders when there are only two barely different stat alterations for gliders anyway? It feels like someone just wanted to throw a third component into the customization process to make it seem deeper, without wanting to give players too much control over "min-maxing" their vehicle.

There’s only like 10 stages missing, and most of them are either bad or redundant.

it's hard because it's long and at the end of a series of long tracks. by the time you get to rainbow road 64 you've just played the three of the longest tracks in the game, only to be greeted by THE longest track in the game. It's an endurance match.

There's no reason for those karts to make you spin out as if you got hit by a bill. Hell they shouldn't have made you spun out at all and simple bumped you away

there's literally nothing wrong with mk8. after getting used to 200cc, it's honestly hard to go back to games without it.

Why is it that whenever Nintendo remake a track they always, ALWAYS fuck it up. They always make changes for the worse, outright remove aspects like shortcuts and the tracks don't mesh well with the new mechanics of the game they've been brought back in.

The DS version of Luigi Circuit is oddly technical, with a ton of shortcuts through dirt covered turns to shave off time on

This is probably my least favourite Mario Kart track post-SNES. I never have fun on this track and I hope they never bring it back. Mario Circuit in 7 is also pretty shitty now that I think about it.

All the sand levels in 8 are fucking ass because of the low traction on sand so you slide way more, which was never a thing in any game before it. I liked it in DD but I agree the version in 8 is terrible and probably one of the worst tracks in the game.

You could say that about most of 7's non-retro tracks. There's only like 4 new tracks in 7 that I actually enjoy playing on.

Wii only, and only with disc. It's an anti-cheat thing. The old version works on Dolphin though if you wanna try it out without online features.

I like it. Sort of like the Double Dash version but set by the sea.

Compare to the minimalist clusterfuck that is the Kart 7 one.

I don't want planes but I do want them to drop gliders. They aren't fun and ruin otherwise good tracks. Gliding makes you extremely vulnerable to items since if you get hit you get an extra time loss from the fall (even worse if it's not a death pit below you) and there's no way to avoid it since often the gliding sections are mandatory. You can't even use the gliding for fun skips since if you try that the hang-glider will disappear 90% of the time and you can't turn worth a damn with it. The only fun skip I've actually managed to do with gliding is skipping the last section of Mushroom Gorge in 7 and even that requires at least 2 mushrooms to do.

It's short.
It's boring, both track design wise and with its visuals.
The music sucks too.
