also there was that that a few seasons ago where all the girls had some phone app, I dropped it a few episodes in when it became clear everyone was gonna fucking die. wixoss is shitty card games version of madoka. madoka really just crossed a ton of genres and made them all terrible, it was a horrible idea and the person who wrote it should feel ashamed of themselves for fucking with an entertainment medium due to dumb luck with popularity, arguably on par with the damage evangelion did due to the exact same circumstances of "its new, it must be more intelligent than it appears at first glance, lets ignore the fact that the author is a dropout from a college program designed to create decent mangaka"

Well, first of all, did you miss the whole plot involving government censorship and the elites of society being part of this theocracy thing?
It's sacrifice in the context of "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." which is the only thing that anime deconstructs.
It presents characters acting heroically out of your own will as good and acting heroically out of pressure from the government and others as bad. You can't force someone to sacrifice themselves.
One of the last things the MC says is "have some faith in your own people" and every bureaucrat/officer/priest who was fine with sending young people to war dies in the last episode, being denied their heaven.
It's a straightforward plot that just gets complicated if you think there is a deeper theme than GOVERNMENT BAD. It manages to do something Madoka doesn't, which is to land an actual message, but it does it in such a boring way it might as well not have tried.
