I'm always surprised when I see Undertale get flack on here, even if it's only ironic shitposting,
A big complaint a lot of hardcore rpg fans have these days is that most role playing games don't let you actually role play. Fallout 4, for example; you can do awful or evil things, but there's no real karma or impact/reactions from the other factions in the game. Your decisions don't really matter.
Yet, in Undertale, the genocide vs pacifist runs really do feel like completely different games, and the death scenes (like toriel and papyrus) have a lot of weight to them. You'd think even the most hardcore of Yea Forums contrarians would appreciate how similar it is to the older games they idolize. It's not a huge game, but it's a nice, compact return to form for the genre.

Where is HK?

Based wholesome/sincerity poster

Behold the autism that is undertale fanbase

It's literally just /r/the_donald-tier neckbeards upset that tumblr also likes the game. Morons completely immersed in identity politics to the extent that they allow them to dictate their tastes in video games and everything else. In places like Japan where this sort of thing doesn't exist, people fucking love Undertale and there is no retarded politically-driven stigma attached to it.

is celeste worth playing

It's the best Super Meat Boy esque / unforgivable 2D side-scroller to come out recently. If you want your fill of that kind of gameplay, it's definitely worth playing.
Also, it has super cozy music / art direction, even though the game is an allegory for depression.

You just KNOW Cuphead will be in there next year

Huh, just realized deltarune is an anagram.

>Also, it has super cozy music / art direction

>beautiful looking game
Factually wrong.

Mechanically it's excellent. Give it a play

It does, though:

What games have art direction you enjoy, user?

>Hollow Knight
Over 1m copies despite being niche
>Stardew Valley
Over 2m copies
>Gold Story
500k copies on one platform
>Dead Cells
Over 1m copies in less than 6 months

>Celeste
Only 500k copies on 4 platforms, over a year since release, universal shilling, and being on sale repeatedly

How come Celeste didn't do as well as the games media wanted?

Not really. It's shit.

Not him, but I found it a bit off-putting how the game was a mixture of HD artwork/assets and fairly low fidelity spritework. It's like they couldn't settle on a cohesive aesthetic and just said whatever. I also wasn't a fan of how character sprites didn't have FACES, what could've been a cute little redhead looks like a mannequin instead.

t. some pedantic prick

It's a demanding platformer and has an icky grill on the cover

Kill yourselves

I don't think it had the necessary humor/meme appeal for a general audience, compared to similar platformers like Super Meat Boy (it sold 1m its first year).
Still, for the size of their studio, 500k is not too shabby. The developer is working on some more difficult bonus levels for the game, so maybe it'll see a boost in sales then. Who knows.

>It's a demanding platformer
It has probably the most egregious implementation of an easy mode I've ever seen.

>Hollow Knight
kino game that attracts many audiences. Metroidvania fans, platforming fans, megaman fans, soulsfags, etc. plus has a great artstyle, music, design and gameplay.
>Stardew Valley
/comfy/ game that anyone can pick up and play. Simple yet addicting gameplay
>Golf Story
unique take on RPG games, fun and easy to get into while also having a lot of mechanics to take in and master
>Dead Cells
pretty much the same as hollow knight
>Celeste
Generic indie pixelshit "hard" platforming game with honestly pretty bad graphics. Brings nothing new to the table nor combines elements from popular titles. Super Meat Boy over a decade late, and without the charm. Plus trannies

I don't think the coverage for Celeste was quite on par with the quality of the game. It didn't live up to the hype. Game like Dead Cells, Undertale, SV, etc, sold well because of word of mouth, not because journos were pushing them down people's throats.

Only ninnies play easy mode and ninnies wouldn't want to buy a demanding platformer in the first place

Turbo mode helps gungeon's biggest problem (being slow as fuck), but now that nuclear throne is on switch there's no reason to play etg or isaac anymore

Cope.

>Celeste made the list
>the devs have said that Celeste has only sold 500k across all platforms
>it must've sold less than 500k on the Switch for that to work out, most likely around 200k
>most of the indies on there aren't even close assuming that Celeste isn't on the bottom of that top 10
so are most indies flops or something?

>A big complaint a lot of hardcore rpg fans have these days is that most role playing games don't let you actually role play.
How does Undertale let you role play? The mechanics are completely disconnected from the narrative. In other rpgs, non-violent conflict resolution is handled through dedicated mechanics like stealth and diplomacy. Undertale just has this completely abstract bullet hell mini game. How does that even make sense?
There's not even any character building or specializations to choose from like in any normal RPG.

I honestly don't understand the appeal of Undertale. The writing and humor is so painfully forced and tumblr-y (or whatever fandom this thing originated from). It somehow manages to be more obnoxious than a Borderlands game. I didn't laugh once during my entire playthrough of it, but I rolled my eyes countless times.

It will also age terribly because of alll the dated pop culture references. Like, there's one part of the game where that scientist interrupts you with messages/calls every few steps you take, which is obviously parodying Facebook message updates. Not only does this show a child's understanding of how comedy works, but that segment is excruciating to play through, because you get interrupted every few steps.

The twist is supposed to be that monsters are actually peaceful and just afraid of you. But then why do they immediately try to murder you? Why don't they approach you peacefully first and see if they can reason with you? Or at least run away?

Why is there a village of monsters who don't attack you? This village is inhabited by monsters interact with you peacefully, so why can't the other monsters do that?

Why are you labeled as a genocidal maniac for fighting back in self-defense (and since the game has invisible random encounters, you can't avoid these enemies and you get assaulted by them just by walking around)?

The whole thing falls apart under the slightest scrutiny.

Attached: 1553096619953.png (894x894, 97K)

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it, user. Would you like to post some vidya music for us to listen to instead?

I can understand that point - a pixelated style with HD assets has a very loud look to it. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, I guess I just didn't mind it personally.

I remember buying this at a time when I was very busy, and stopped playing because I wasn't up to the grind. Maybe I'll go back and try it.

>so are most indies flops or something?
Most indies aren't made by SoCal/San Francisco hipsters with expensive life styles.

>plus trannies
Got it, you didn't even look at the game lmao

>Switch is an indie haven

How is this meme a thing? Most of these games premiered on other system way earlier or at the exact same time when they popped up in the eShop.

The art direction is actually the one thing I would criticize. The pixel art looks okay albeit very played out at this point, but then the character portraits are HD art, as are the text boxes? And the main menu is a low poly 3D model of the mountain? It just does a bunch of different things at once that don't really mesh together that well. I think it would've been better if they chose one of these styles and stuck with it instead of trying to use all of them at once.

Damn no BOI?

>he's talking about things that have zero effect on the actual game

>indirectly funding trannies

No peepee poopoo game (cuz it sux)

If those trannies are making fun platformers I got no problem funding them

The controversy is more entertaining, but it isn’t a bad game

how many copies did undertale sell? 2mil?

Without hesitation, yes. The platforming feels as close to perfection as you can get, and the music sticks with you. The way the story is told feels too much like the writers are hiding from its themes behind cutesy characters and uguu kawaii dialogue and faces, but everything else is excellent and among some of the best out there.

I even ordered the physical version that's coming out from Limited Run. That's how good it is.

>by July 2018, the game had an estimated total of three and a half million players on Steam.

That's just on Steam.

Hey, if a game is fun to play I don't give a fuck who makes it.

Overcooked is the shit

What controversy?

>The mechanics are completely disconnected from the narrative. In other rpgs, non-violent conflict resolution is handled through dedicated mechanics like stealth and diplomacy. Undertale just has this completely abstract bullet hell mini game.
Sure, it's not Baldur's Gate, but I thought the bullet hell was an interesting addition that hadn't really been done like that in an RPG. It doesn't have any narrative cohesion, but in terms of gameplay and tone, I thought it fit perfectly.

>The writing and humor is so painfully forced and tumblr-y
It didn't feel like that to me at all. It felt more like a self-aware 80s/90s cartoon, with the bizarre multiverse lore bits sprinkled throughout.

> Like, there's one part of the game where that scientist interrupts you with messages/calls every few steps you take, which is obviously parodying Facebook message updates
This reminded me of Metal Gear more than anything, so I don't think it'll easily date itself.

>The twist is supposed to be that monsters are actually peaceful and just afraid of you. But then why do they immediately try to murder you? Why don't they approach you peacefully first
>Why is there a village of monsters who don't attack you? This village is inhabited by monsters interact with you peacefully, so why can't the other monsters do that?
The village is an example of monsters who do exactly that, they react differently. There are also random encounters in the wild that are largely dialogue based throughout the game (although they only spawn under certain fun values).

>The whole thing falls apart under the slightest scrutiny.
Maybe I'm reaching here, but I felt like it held up pretty well under scrutiny.
There are some things that I do question, like the point about self defense that you brought up. Yet, overall, the game does what it sets out to do, which is to explore how messy and dense ethics and morality really are. I enjoyed that aspect.

Attached: 1433760042037.jpg (500x295, 59K)

and in 2017 it sold more then 100k copies on the ps4 in japan alone

Attached: huh3.png (577x465, 251K)

Who gives a fuck, half of this board jerks off to trannies while cross-dressing themselves.

Attached: 1359564644283.jpg (352x315, 41K)

>not playing quality games because of dev' s identity

If the game is good then that's all that should matter. I bet you think Judas Priest is a shot band.

>peepee poopoo game
KEK

but the games only calls you out if you do the grun hell the only times that sans insults you is if you kill his brother

You opine about RPG mechanics in a game with a very simple narrative fork, and basically built so you only see 1 ending on your first playthrough. The game is grindy as fuck if you want to do an evil run. It is not good as a JRPG so it'd be painful to attempt it, and the final boss battle is an absurd difficulty spike. There's no grand set of options or paths to play as. You must never play RPGs to arrive at this opinion.

Undertale's writing and characters have the sophistication of a 90's Nickelodeon cartoon.

I enjoyed Undertale, but my head isn't so far up my own ass that I can't see its flaws or understand the criticisms.

It's my favorite Metroidvania that isn't Metroid or Castlevania. The music, art, and gunplay flow together beautifully and you really feel like you're in this pulsing, fleshy mass of a planet.

>1965
On this day in 1965, the Moroccan army shot at demonstrators, killing over 100 civilians.

Attached: 1439276073669.jpg (863x752, 96K)

>not wanting to be dommed by daddy halford

>beautiful looking game
It's legitimately one of the ugliest games I've ever had the displeasure of looking at.

Nice projection homo.

Undertale fucking sucks

Not him but it's exceedingly rare that I see a criticism directed at the game that doesn't involve tumblr somehow.

-Epic Store ruined their launch
-the team’s publisher owes them a large sum of money

Its sad to see japan accept this cringefest

Seems like good games to me

I conceded to some of your criticisms, user, and agree that it's not a terribly sophisticated or complex game.
My point was that, even in this streamlined form (I agree with you on that, 100%), I think it achieves a lot more than most modern rpgs do, in terms of how different one playthrough looks compared to another, narrative / dialogue wise.
Doing a genocide run in Undertale feels dirty, as characters beg for their lives and are shocked that they're about to die, and you were the one to kill them. I haven't played many games recently that tap into those vibes, so I found it refreshing.

I like undertale, but it is pretty ugly.
I need to say, that the battle screen style is incredibly iconic, though

i want more rpgs like undertale and golf story thats have a twist on the rpg formula like adding bullet hell and the golfing care to recommend me some

so is nutdealer

Try inazuma eleven on ds/3ds

Not indie but theyre soccer rpgs
You might enjoy them

Yeah, I agree on this. The genocide run was raw and actually what made me like the game. But the appeal of Undertale imo is entirely resting on its story. It's going to get shit from people who don't resonate with the pacifist themes, or people who took the RPG/retro hype at face value and wanted just that.

oh i remember watching the anime didnt know it had a game thanks user
same the genocide run was the shit i love it when games make me feel guilty when i do bad stuff like this and lisa

Attached: I think it looks kinda cute.png (640x480, 14K)

its cute but ugly user

I can accept that description

Attached: 1411483816189.jpg (500x666, 94K)

Why is the player character's overworld sprite work noticably shittier than everyone else's? They couldn't decide whether to give them skinny legs with a big gap or thicker legs with an outline gap so they did both? Those baby arms?

good now listening to this youtube.com/watch?v=zyRIylopG9M still cant believe that this aired on japenece tv

cuz toby made it and he is a shit artist

I still cant tell if frisk is a boi or a grill

>Inconsistent shading
>Inconsistent perspective
>No actual shadows
>Frisk looks like a 9 year old's first attempt at spritework

That's intentional

The undertale artbook actually explains this. He intentionally made some parts of the game look worse/left some parts of the game drawn by him because otherwise everything he'd draw would stick out like a sore fucking thumb because he knows he's a shit artist. There were a whole bunch of Papyrus sprites and an alternate gameover screen that he completely scrapped solely because they looked too good compared to everything else and it made everything look weird.
I think he says in the artbook that the only boss fight he didn't have any help with drawing at all was Asriel's.

I bought Celeste last week and holy fuck, what a game
Also Madeline and Theo definitely fucked

I thought the same when I played the game for the first time.
Dunno what changed, maybe I'm just used to it now, but I kinda like the design. It's hideously iconic.

Hearing this properly orchestrated is something else. I don't know how Toby was able to crank out so many bangers.

Also, just for proof, here's a pastebin containing a MEGA link to the artbook.
pastebin.com/1MRmU0Gk

The colour palette looks comfy, reminds me of Pokemon G/S/C

I honestly love that even with Temmie doing most of the work for the Deltarune sprites, she still kept the weird legs from the Frisk sprite when drawing Kris.

Overcooked is fun, HK is decent but not great desu.

Nooooooooo Japan what the fuck stop! You have to hate this game!
