Imagine if you will a timeline where Robin was the only fire emblem character added in the base game of smash 4 with roy added back in as dlc later. The game reaches its natural lifespan and smash ultimate gets revealed. Alongside the trailer for Ridley, corrin is revealed. And later after that there is no chrom.

Corrin isn’t a bad inclusion at all. He was included badly, being released before his game came out outside of japan as a brand new character alongside he likes of bayonetta, ryu and cloud in a series that already crossed the line with lucina, robin and roy already being in the same game.

The only thing that has me confused is that his inclusion wasn’t marketed as “Super Smash Bros. X Shin Megami Tensei”, but instead as “Super Smash Bros. X Persona 5”. If it was the former, I could see why they would choose Joker, since he’s probably a lot more recognizable and marketable today compared to say Aleph, Flynn, Nanashi, or even Jack Frost. But specifically saying that the crossover is just with P5 seems so strange to me. It also kind of bums me out since it means there’s going to be no SMT content added unless Joker summons Personae other than Arsene, or through Spirits. Even then, the Spirits will be labeled as coming from P5 over SMT. It’s super autistic, but it still irks me

Playstyle is fun as fuck with side b meaning I have a wario fart on a stick at all times. I like the spacing that playing a sword brings but Corrin is filled with satisfying aerial combos alongside that. Side b mobility is fun to play around with. Compared to other characters it feels like he had more care put into how each of his abilities interact with eachother that playing has more of a flow to it than winning neutral 700 times until it knocks them off.
In terms of aesthetics the animation for stuff like jab and neutral b is beautiful. The concept of having a character whose hands turn into lances is fucking awesome. Helmets with antlers are never not cool. He can transform into fucking arceus. I haven’t played the games but years of RP have given me a fondness for mary sues and having a half dragon prince with a magic chainsaw sword is right up my alley. From what I’ve heard about the character reminds me of myself as a kid. I like the contrast in his taunts with the female version in that it deliberately doesn’t have him showing any outright malice to his opponents; I hate it when characters are presented as good guys while being really smug or angry all the time.

His recovery is very unique among the roster, he has a counter that works as a buff, and his command grab has 3 different outcomes. Add onto his grappler style throws and you actually have a pretty unique wrestling style character. His backthrow is the best killthrow in the game even.

Then they also have stuff about them like a history with Nintendo, and representing gaming history as a whole. Cloud and Joker come in, and all of a sudden it’s “just Final Fantasy VII”. It’s “just Persona 5”. Why is Cloud not being added to represent JRPGs as a whole, and to rep his whole franchise? Ryu appears in pretty much every Street Fighter and while Simon doesn't appear in every Castlevania, he's appeared in a great deal and most of the classic games play similarly anyway (even then, he took inspiration from Richter who, in turn, is his echo).
Cloud and Joker come from specific games and presumably can't fill that niche as well. There's also how willing the companies are at playing ball given how draconian Squeenix appears to be, given the lack of FFVII content, much less FF in general.

I will never understand the hate for Corrin as a fighter inclusion, I would rather have Corrin than literally any of the straight-up Marth clones from that series. Personally, for me, I think it's more the context behind it. We know for a fact that Solid Snake was Sakurai getting begged by Kojima to do it and he was too late for Melee, so he was resolved to do it for Brawl. It's a very personal exchange and makes it feel like it means something beyond just "we want to appeal to x crowd."

Joker was part of a shortlist given to him by the suits at Nintendo, and while we know Sakurai loves P5 to an incredible degree, it's still a different feel from someone like Snake.

That's not to say that I dislike Joker, far from it, just applying logic to it is all. When you think about it, the 3rd party slot is usually a really big deal, and the ones that get it are usually personal cases like Snake, or really big icons in gaming as a whole, like Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, etc.
