The more you die, the more NPCs get infected and eventually die. Story and quest wise, it pretty much punishes you for dying.

People say that you can try to save them on NG+, but that's not really guaranteed with this system anyway. Plus I can't really see myself replaying the game, it's fun but limited, you'd pretty much be doing the exact same thing again without new weapons or builds.

This is what I did in the Souls series to beat bosses. I'd always make a copy of my save right before a fog gate so I could just challenge the boss over and over again without wasting time running back.

I remember it not mattering too much in DS3 though. After the guy who splits into a shadow clone, the bosses all became drastically easier. Even he only took a handful of attempts. The guy who rides on a dragon was a pain in the ass though, and made me resort to cheese with a bow. I found my inputs weren't responsive when rolling as melee vs him.

You can turn infinite items on and constantly use the item that reduces damage, I guess.

I don't know why people cheat in a single player game. Just watch the cutscenes on youtube if you're not willing to play the game.

There are skills (special attacks and new moves, not abilities like in an RPG). You kill enemies and they give you experience to your next skill point. If you die, you lose half of your progress to your next skill point. So ideally you throw yourself at a boss when you just gained a skill point and don't have any progress to lose.

you unlock a skill point if you fill the xp bar and you can spend them on skills like new moves or passives
