It was a few strings of code that got datamined in smash, the first datamine was for three possible dlc character files but they had codenames. One was for piranha plant one of them was called “brave” people are trying to figure out and one was code named jack which people assumed is for joker. Somewhere else in the file jack was linked with mementos so that basically confirmed jack is the name for joker in the code and his stage will likely be mementos. Thy also found some code that link with the costumes for characters and one of them for jack has the name “Jane” and “pony tail” as code that matches hair coding for characters so it was assumed joker may have a female alternate costume in smash and likely why we haven’t seen anything of joker in smash yet is because they are waiting for the female option to be announced in one of the new persona games.

If you were a member of the Phantom Thieves and someone asked you what you thought of them you probably would say that

Well yeah, if she's a skin for Joker, then that means she'll fight like Joker right? I don't play Smash so I dunno how it works, but I assume she'll have his moves, and use a dagger like him too. And he'll almost certainly have Arsene, which means she'll get some kind of skin of that too.

Basically being a skin for Joker means she's gonna have a lot of similarity to him, it's not like they'd reskin him as Ann or someone if it meant swinging a dagger around and fighting with Arsene. And they wouldn't do that for this new character if she's not gonna be like that in the new game.

There are a bunch of Japanese games that do this. The biggest offender in my opinion would be Kingdom Hearts. So many final mixes and rereleases and HD upgrades.

Female Protagonist caused them to completely redo the story from scratch, which is why it's taking over 9 months assuming the Joker reveal was anything to go by since Nintendo had planned the DLC months prior to they revealed anyone, meaning they knew about all of the ports & games coming to the Switch. That would be an insane amount of time for what would have been a simple remaster with added content. Because if it was a PS4 exclusive & the girl was simply a side character while everything else was remained unchanged then it would already be released by now. None of them really look like our cast though except for Ryuji and Ann, and she’s only and outcast because Japan is xenophobic and happas probablly don’t get treated super well in school. That said Yusuke only looks outcast because he doesn’t wear the same school uniform as the other. Makoto and Haru look so generic it hardly matters. I could see arguments for Makoto being a moe-gap thing with how she acts so different in battle compared to in school, but I think everyone can agree Haru was awful and had almost no time to build a character.
