There are still japanese players online surprisingly. Majority of them are on Light vs Dark mode though, with broken weapon sets

That explains the group of queued Japs I played against a while ago. Never encountered Japs again after that, and dropped multiplayer as soon as I realized I was playing against bots.

Honestly I don't think a sequel will every be able to do the original justice. The controls were near perfect in the original, no other control scheme would give you the same level of precision and speed that the stylus + circlepad gave. If they wanted to create a sequel with twin sticks + gyro controls like Splatoon, they'd need to slow down the gameplay. It's just a shame that so many people couldn't appreciate the controls because they were unorthodox.

honestly with all these shitty worthless switch ports it makes me think what would be more likely, a port of a sequel? ill honestly take either. the campaign would be great with updated graphics, and they'd get a chance to balance some of the more broken aspects of an otherwise addicting fucking mp.

Neither. I unironically don't think we'll ever get another Kid Icarus game. Even though it sold well and is arguably more popular now than it was when it came out thanks to Smash and Youtube, Sakurai has deconfirmed both a sequel and a port. This wouldn't be a problem if the chances of somebody else taking the reigns wasn't so low.
