Modern music is actually really good, mostly because the "mainstream" is being destroyed. Instead of having everyone crowd around the same few radio stations, now there are lots of specialized pockets where artists can enter with very little resistance and contribute in depth without having to do crowd-pleasing bullshit. You're not even really complaining about music as a whole, just Top 40, but that's always been pretty hit or miss. The decades of boomer golden era were full of Top 40 songs that are unbearably awful and instantly forgettable, just as they currently are.
