Main reason is because Joel was such an easier character for normalfags to gravitate and give
sympathy and empathy for, killing his daughter early was a way to communicate to the audience that it's gonna be hard for him and you feel bad for him.
With Ellie being present you can also see what they're setting up for, Joel opens up to Ellie and he treats her like his daughter or whatever.
It was a very, very, very easy written dynamic of characters. That's why it's so praised.
It was a easy written character with simple plain and understandable dynamics.

I think that comes with the territory of Movie-style games and I don't mean that as an insult. There's a minimum quality threshold (with graphics, lighting, voices, story, etc.) that gives it the "Wow" factor and becomes impressive to most people. Sort of like in Hollywood how you can get general good reviews just by following particular formulas even if the film itself is nothing special. So TLOU didn't have to have innovative gameplay, or a deeply complex story. It just had to be better than other videogames at doing what it did, and wrap it up into an appealing package for the average consumer.

I've never played tlou, but Undertale and BotW are both 7/10 at best.

If it's a mediocre game that trashed the series' classic formula in favor of a big empty open world and horrible gameplay design like botw did, then yes.
It's not just a game getting its dick sucked by reviewers that pisses people off, it's why that matters. If tlou was praised and paraded around purely for the fact that it was progressive while the game itself is mediocre, that's going to irritate people.

It came at the peak of "Zombie" saturation and combined elements of both The Walking Dead and The Road. The story about a father figure doing everything in their power for a child gets people moist. The gameplay was lackluster and repetitive, but very easy for even the most brainless to follow. Most reviews were probably done via the tech builds that looked amazing in comparison to the actual product.

Why does this game buttblast Yea Forums? The kind of sci fi premise for the infection I think is original (see: all the other zombie games where the infection is just a boring disease), and it makes the enemy design for the infected very cool and aesthetic, along with the infection and "reclaiming of nature" making the world very beautiful. Also has an actually semi realistic take on how the infection took over, with the government declaring martial law and there being a resistance and whatnot. It's a good parent guardian type story, and the characters motivations and bond is shown in a simple but hard hitting way. Like, it's horror, so one can't expect too much in terms of story, I mean, we even have the "she happens to be immune" trope. BUT they take that trope and divert expectations by Joel ending up being the bad guy, and having to make the choice of choosing saving everyone in the world from suffering forever, or not letting go of the only thing he's been able to care about since his daughter died. Like that's huge- you don't just get the option to cure the infection and save the world in these type of stories, but he said fuck that for his own emotional gain. Yes linear, but it has a lot of thrilling gameplay sequences, and just has a good balance of good survival horror mechanics, i.e. resource management, crafting, upgrades, and it has some of the best weapon selection UI in a survival horror game, and the holster system is really good. Level design and enemy placement is great. The combat is great, the stealth is very consistent and fluid, and good stealth is pretty absent in the genre so I appreciate it. You can whine about listen mode "ruining it", but harder difficulties don't let you use it, and makes the game a lot more intense. Also, the multiplayer alone is insanely good. Tlou 2 will beat out your favorite game, and saying the reviews or fake or it's a movie game won't put a dent in it. See you then!

I thought it was fun, even if the story was over-hyped I still enjoyed the general gamplay. Don't see the need to hate on it simply because it was popular.

I don't think this is a good argument due to the way the game handles it. You find out one of the recordings state that Ellie's blood produces normal cordyceps infection after being cultivated in vitro. Also they immediately want to just open her and take out the brain without thorough testing. This is after knowing well that the fireflies are a bunch of incompetent idiots that are being rekt by the official gubmint left and right and especially after finding out that they had immune subjects before and they surprise surprise failed to produce the cure. Also the anesthesia procedure and the way the entire operating personnel is portrayed is just wrong (I used to work in pediatric operating room) but I give you that this is probably just Naughty Dog not doing their homework (judging by how Joel just takes her away and she wakes up instead of dying) and Joel wouldn't know anyways. All in all there is no reason to believe that the fireflies are not just mindlessly butchering a girl and there is no sliver of imagination left to believe they would manage to produce anything, even useful information. The most probable explanation to Ellie's immunity is being born one with the ability to be in symbiosis with cordyceps and you can't replicate that.
