the nylund ones are kino as fuck, the flood is ok if you skip the chief parts, dunno about the forerunner trilogy or kilo-five.

>halofag
you don't belong here, either. start with the greeks

They're pretty solid, those three anyway. Virtually every one to come after those are steam-pressed ass, though.

Fall of Reach is Good

First Strike is decent

Flood is shit

I read all 3 during my family trip to Cape Cod circa 2006

Fall of Reach is the best Halo book hands down. First Strike is pretty good, as is Ghosts of Onyx. The Flood is really dry, but it does add a lot of context to things happening between the levels of the first game which is pretty cool. I liked Cole Protocol but I really don't remember anything about it. Contact Harvest was pretty meh, and that's all I've read.

Have fun with your jumping and woo hoping

I actually just finished the master chief collection. I borrowing an an Xbox one. 4 made no sense and people told me to read the books. Are those the ones they're referring to?

Fall of Reach, First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx are definitely worth reading.

Imagine reading a book with an xbox logo on it.

Woo hooing*

No, they're referring to the newer Karen Traviss novels about the forerunners. It's schlock, don't bother.

yikes

based

Good: Contact Harvest, Fall of Reach, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx

OK: The Cole Protocol, The Flood

Shit: The rest

Just read Fall of Reach, First Strike, and maybe Ghosts of Onyx.

Pic unrelated.

Erik is god.

>The Flood
>not the pinnacle of shittyness
It's nothing more than a text let's play without commentary.

The Flood is so weird, it's like if you had a person just narrate their actions as they played CE and put that to text. "He shot two grunts, then turned to the right and shot another one" etc

They are okay. Have some serious plot holes in some of them but if you overlook them they are pretty damn good for video game novels.

second post best post

ok user time for a breakdown, I haven't read every book but I fucking love halo.
>fall of reach 8/10 required reading
>first strike, 7/10 not as good as fall of reach but interesting
>the flood 5/10 not very well written but does have some lore tidbits and character building
>ghosts of onyx 9/10 really damn good
>contact harvest 8/10 has some good lore about different parts of the halo universe and a good story
>cole protocol 7/10 not bad
>halo forerunner trilogy by greg bear, 8/10 a bit long winded but really well written and actually required to fully understand halo 4
>hunters in the dark 7/10 not badly written, and you get to see elite characters
>halo evolutions, not bad short stories, 7/10
>halo smoke and shadow 7/10 short, firefly ripoff
as for the rest there's a bunch of new ones that have varying reception, but some good ones i've heard of like envoy. karen traviss trilogy is supposed to suck.

Fall of Reach is great, The Flood is good, First Strike is very good. I also enjoyed Contact Harvest and Cole Protocol, never read any other books like the Forerunner stuff.

Read the first trilogy, then Contact harvest, Ghosts of Onyx, Cole Protocol, and Evolutions vol 1 in that order. It doesn't follow the timeline exactly, but it makes more sense that way.

fall of reach is the only decent one.

Came here to say essentially this

Ghosts of Onyx and Fall of Reach are by far the best two Halo books ever produced

First Strike and Contact Harvest are very solid

Kilo-five is all new shit, but has some good moments

Cole protocol is basically the kilo-five but only the good parts and set before everything except Contact Harvest. Some boring parts though

Forerunner triology is.... an interesting sci-fi read for people EXTREMELY invested in halo lore, but don’t touch it if you aren’t

The parts with the other marines and Captain Keyes was decent.
I'd be willing to downgrade it though, the author was kinda retarded.
>two people (an officer and a pilot) betraying everyone else to the Covenant
>this is after they have just finished glassing Reach
>Keyes leaving someone hogtied to be either torn apart alive by jackals or be useful to the enemy instead of just shooting them

The only part of the Flood that I really remember is the stuff that was about Keyes after he had been infected.

Oh yeah Evolutions has a lot of great short stories too

Overall I liked Forerunner trilogy, though the second book is a bit of a drag. I love the third because it goes into 40k-style grimdark cosmic horror story

Shame we never got anything about Red Team. Enjoyed their banter in Halo Wars. And would enjoy seeing a game based on their adventures fucking up the covenant.

damn that game looks tough
i've never been good at making the right moves under pressure like that webm

They need to make ODST-like games between every mainline Halo game with just different stories during the human-covenant war. They need to be big budget games. Just story driven campaigns with a bare bones MP

You didn't like Flood? I thought it was at least decent. What did you not like about it?

Fall of Reach is babby's first Starship Troopers but its solid. First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx are worth reading if you liked Fall of Reach. The Flood is pretty meh though it has some cool parts that detail what happens outside of what the game portrays.

Not him, but it reads like video gayme adaptation. It retreads a lot of the same shit as the game (which, ironically, so Halo 1 for the end half of the campaign) so it feels kinda bland compared to the Fall of Reach and First Strike (which are almost entirely original).

I agree completely

Pretty much every bungie book except Contact harvest and Cole protocol have been retconned in some way.

Also fuck niggers, fucks spics, and fuck jannies.

Yes! Anything by Nylund is great. The Flood is just a retelling of Halo 1. Contact Harvest is also good. Then you should try out the Cryptun. If you like That then read the other two forerunner books.

Can someone explain to me why the Greg Bear novels are often disliked? Is it just the retconning that 343 made him do?

Unironically this. That’s the best part abd orobably only great part of that book. It’s honestly too good for it. So good that I think it was made into a terminal in H1A

I thought they were VHS tapes for some reason and got all nostalgic
