i can't even relate to gamers my age when they talk about their best cod/minecraft memories because i had to be the weird fuckin idiot playing banjo-kazooie on the xbox live arcade.

From my experience kids in the 6-8 range would go for this (Fortnite fans keep getting younger it seems) but for the middle-school demographic I assume the book is going for it would probably come off as laughable.

that's not ~entirely~ true. take Japanese games for example, they had to adapt to the modern, globalized world. gone are the days of custom engines, everything has the same plastic UE look now. and that's on the technical side, God forbid they show a nipple because Sony California would go on a hunger strike.
indie games are making sort of a comeback thanks to 3D but they've been saturated for the longest time. and the very definition of "indie" implies certain limitations, no matter how good Blasphemous turns out to be it'll never be able to compete with SotN.
these are just some examples. modern gaming is riddled with issues, political, technical, monetary. it's a mess. whereas back then you could just blindly pick a random tittle and at least enjoy it to some degree, nowadays companies would have to pay me to even try their blockbusters because I know I'll come across the same bullshit as the last one.
