Wh-what are you doing Soken-san?!
Succeeding you, Uematsu-sensei..
I personally find Uematsu's work on pretty much anything after Playstation extremely hit or miss. FF7's OST is one-third amazing, two-thirds painfully boring while Blue Dragon is mostly just loud and obnoxious.

Lost Odyssey was his last good work, everything after that has been passable at best.

Only tangentially related, but I thought this is interesting

>Most of the music in this game is comprised of multiple source audio files playing at once, to give it a self-composing feel. The number of puzzles solved in the current age determines which set of music files plays. If none or all four of the puzzles are solved, then the files are drawn from the resource folder LI_T, EN_T, or MA_T, where LI stands for Edanna (life), EN stands for Voltaic (energy), and MA stands for Amateria (matter). Otherwise, the music is drawn from the folder LI_M, EN_M, or MA_M. Each file within these folders has a 1, 2, or 3 in the filename to specify exactly how many puzzles must be solved in that age for that file to play. Here's how the music is "composed". Usually, a file denoted as the "pad" loops indefinitely (though in some cases two different pad files are used). On top of that plays a sequence of "mldy" files, usually timed to harmonize with the pad (sometimes another label such as "pipe" is used). Various effects such as "stinger", "bells", "drum", and "squeal" chime in randomly throughout. Some examples of filenames are LI_THEME_pad2.wav, EN_M3_noise4.wav, and MA_M2_mldy5.mp3. Many of the tracks in the Official Soundtrack are special arrangements and embellishments of the compositions within in game, particularly those found in the M folders. Therefore, these tracks are not actually present within the game, at least not in their exact form.
I'm a big fan of Hitoshi Sakimoto and Michiru Yamane. Both have produced my favorite vidya OSTs. The only one with the same recognition as Uematsu in the public eye is Koji Kondo though. They all produce fantastic OSTs though.
As an aside, I'm surprised I can't name any western composers on the same level, besides Tim Follin, in vidya OSTs.
Liking both, I'll go on record saying, that Frank Klepacki has far wider range than Uematsu.

Shoji Meguro is the fucking man.
Shimamura, Soken, and Iwadare.
I can't get into Uematsu's music. Mitsuda is far better imo.
>As an aside, I'm surprised I can't name any western composers on the same level, besides Tim Follin, in vidya OSTs.
Uh, David Motherfucking Wise?
ACE.
Uematsu peaked at FFIX, which is still probably my favorite vidya OST.
This is the greatest soundtrack ever composed for a video game or movie ever
youtu.be
The composer is not Samuragochi though
>implying soule isn't the hans zimmer of video game music
keeps making the same soundtrack for what now? 20 years?
Wouldn't hurt to mix up the instruments a bit. I thought I was playing Morrowind when Guild Wars 2 came out.
>chrono cross has the best soundtrack ever made
*youtube.com
>not 1st Movement
shit taste
>ACE
They have only made 2 OSTs
You know, I had forgotten he had existed despite listening to the Donkey Kong OSTs this morning. I feel kind of bad about that. I still think I resonate more with Japanese composers than Western ones for the most part though.
Kenji Ito
Shinji Hosoe+Ayako Saso ULTIMATE COMBO

Tsuyoshi Sekito
Noriyuki Asakura
Yoko Shimomura
Ryuji Sasai
Satoshi Kadokura
Masashi Hamauzu
Tetsuya Shibata
Daisuke Ishiwatari
Noriyuki Kamikura
Just to name a few.
That's because western video game soundtracks are all a joke and are just all discount John Williams (except indie games).
hows that TES VI soundtrack coming?
Oh wait
hamazu is objectively better

FFVI's OST is still fucking a ride
UHHH Is this supposed to be bad? Sounds like a jam to me.
I know a lot of indie devs commission musicians too. I wonder if the musicians design to the game or the devs design around the music given to them. Maybe that's too silly of a question.
I listened to "Balance is Restored" on the way home from work during a rough period in my life. I almost died from fighting the tears. It was a catalyst for me to help move past some of the shit I'd been dealing with.
I prefer Yoko Shimomura, but I admit Uematsu has more variety
my man
Is that Kylo Ren?
Get some real spanish guitar in there, buddy.
That shit makes me fall asleep.

Is this the cringe weeb thread?
Is it bad that I think the original soundtrack from FFXII sounds better than Zodiac Age?
can you watch the whole video and still like it? because that will repeat for the next 60 hours you'll be playing the damn game
posting the best boyz
I really hate how the worst song in the game is the one you hear the most. With that said, he's right, CC has a great OST. Not "best OST" in the overall, I really don't like its overreliance on the classic CT motif, but still some real bangers.

First post, best post. Uematsu's still the man, though.
You must be deaf if you can't tell difference between each TES and GW.
If Todd won't invite Soule it will be the biggest fuck up of his.
Yeah it means you're a 30 year old boomer whose ears have been ruined by beep boop music, and who has probably never heard live orchestral music in person, and likely has a shit sound setup.
>Hamauzu
>Nothing from Saga Frontier 2

I play Chrono Cross every year or so and always find a new track I didn't pay attention much that I end up loving.
>No Masafumi Takada so far.

You're just uncultured and don't know what instruments actually sound like.
>No one said Koichi Sugiyama in this thread.
True plebeians. All of you.
What ever happened to Kyd? He used to be amazing with Hitman, FF, Darksiders, and Asscreed.
SaGa Frontier 2 and Unlimited SaGa are peak Hamauzu.
The sheer variety of genre hopping in Unlimited is mindblowing.

His fucking up with Fallout - secondary series. Fucking up with TES will bury the studio
Maybe I am. It's not like music structure matters more anyway, right?
I've only listened to the OST. Is Unlimited Saga worth my time to play?
I would say no. He's had some weaker sound tracks especially in recent years. But if you were to take every song/soundtrack that every vidya composer has done and ranked them, I'm sure that Nobuo would have the highest quality per song and per soundtrack on average.
Plenty of composers have struck gold once or twice on some great soundtracks, but I don't think anyone has put out as much work of such a consistently high quality as him.
What do you mean music structure, are you retarded? It's an identical song, just witch different instrumentation (one with synthesized instruments and the other with live). It's okay, there are tons of people who don't know what real instruments sound like, its a big issue.
>Rockband made of the Dev Team is making tracks for the game
I love the Primals seeing them live with Yoshida is always a bliss
This, Uematsu is a god through and through but Mitsuda has surpassed reality itself with soundtracks like Chrono Trigger/Cross, and Xenogears.
CT with it being a combo of Mitsuda and Uematsu is far and away the greatest vidya OST that ever has been or will be.
Not him, but I sure as hell can.
Also fuck dwarves.

>Is Unlimited Saga worth my time to play?
Unlimited is an absolutely fantastic game if you're REALLY into SaGa's own brand of weirdness and REALLY into tabletop.
It's one of those games you can only enjoy if you're willing to put a lot of time into understanding it and aren't afraid of something that is actually unique, I personally love it, but it's not for everyone and definitely not for a casual audience.
You are the one making a huge deal out of me preferring the way synthetized FFXII's ost sounds over orchestral. Why does that bother you so much?
>Tekken 7 OST
>Weeb shit
>Is Unlimited Saga worth my time to play?
Confusing and barely explained game mechanics, RNG up the ass, extremely unbalanced difficulty, graphics pretty much nonexistant and story is underwhelming.
I personally find the tabletop aesthetic super comfy but even once you get through the awful entry barrier (it took me like two days of starting and restarting the game to get the basic gist), I still can't get over the retarded RNG.
Never played XII and the originals sound better to me
>Uematu openly stated that he wanted to be him
Him and DQ overall are really underappreciated.

I enjoyed Shimomura's work on XV, it was the first Final Fantasy since IX where I actually paid attention to the music and it wasn't just a background moodsetter. I wouldn't say she's better than him, but I would not have a problem if she kept doing work for the future games since the poor man's slowing down
This user also deserves a (You) though, because Sakimoto is goat and the Tactics Ogre soundtrack is absolutely top notch. Weird how he dropped the ball so hard when composing for XII.
this entire thread is full of JRPG music and you call me out on being a weeb what the fug
>implying anyone cares about him after the DQ11 fiasco
good shit.
kazuyas tekken 2 theme is one of my favourite tracks
Oh I thought you were that guy, yeah you right. I thought you were him saying the synthesized version were better because they were somehow different.
I like Mick Gordon. DOOM had a great OST, but I think this is his best track.
never played it. should I?
Mainline FF isn't weebshit like God fucking Eater
Good stuff
youtube.com
tekken2 kazuya theme sounds pretty similar to terra's theme from ff6
fpbp just like that
mediocre game, sick music. his theme for jago is great as well.

i also really enjoy the final boss music from wolfenstein 2, youtube.com
turn those knobs mickey
I haven't enjoyed a Uematsu soundtrack since X. But what he did back was great.
Now I'm more into Okabe, Shimomura, and Kajiura (new game with music by Kajiura when?)
Frank's really one of my favorites, he's always got at least a few good tracks on each album.
>Beltan Zipper isn't weebshit
Whatever you say, user-kun.
First, there were The Black Mages. Now there's The Primals. It's like poetry, it rhymes.
How can you not enjoy modern Uematsu?

Lost Odyssey's soundtrack is stellar too.
user... these games are 13 and 12 years old...
No. he is the best one.

Hidenori Shoji, anyone?
Sakimoto isn't the best of them all, but damn if I'm not starving for more osts by him.

Too cheesy for me. Can't stand the vocals.
Jesper Kyd did some really good stuff

Kenji Ito, Yoko Shimomura and Michiru Yamane are all better than him but I won't deny Uematsu's legendary work on FF. Theatrhythm is prob still my favorite rhythm game cause of the music.
>Samples the drumline from Ballroom Blitz
Is there anything this man won't do
>tfw we'll never get Xenosaga IV with Kajiura's top tier music

It hurts. Keep ACE/Mitsuda for the mainline Xenoblade games, make Kajiura and Sawano work together on the Xenoblade X series.
I dislike original XII OST, but remaster sounds just horrible.
