>pick it up for sale for $20 >go in expecting a """cinematic""" walking simulator about FEELINGS >get a surprisingly competent ARPG with good combat, an interesting story, a kid that manages to not be too hateable and based Mimir bantz
Have any games surprised you for the better lately, Yea Forums?
It's pretty good but there are a lot of flaws with the combat and level design. It's not bad but with the pedigree of their studio I didn't expect so many amateur mistakes
Justin Lewis
Yea Forums is full of shill anyway it's the place where the shill come to get their paidcheck
Joshua Rodriguez
I still haven't finished this game. It's shit. Got just past the giant's corpse and dropped it. They should have kept the combat system from the real GoW games.
Kayden Jones
You're stupid for listening to Nintendo tards that don't know shit. Part 2 is gonna be even better.
Noah Campbell
For like a week Yea Forums liked it, then it got too much praise and became too popular so the people who couldn't / wouldn't play it got very vocal about how they wanted everyone else to shut up about it. Only now a year later am I seeing some people lighten up on it finally
Grayson Ortiz
I don't like the camera
Gavin Walker
Yea Forums is also full of english illiterates, such as yourself.
You fight the same reskinned boss 10 times, and the kid is fucking retarded towards the end of the game.
Tyler Watson
Kinda the same as DMC5 and Sekiro, then.
Noah Walker
It's a blend of a hack-and-slash with an ARPG
Noah Sanchez
I liked it but it feels it didn't do enough with its story because they wanted to save it all for the next games. Also
Liam Cruz
The ogres are not necesarily a boss, more like a stronger enemy you fight sometimes
The game needed more enemy variety, i agree to that
Anthony Walker
/thread
Logan Roberts
You also fight Magni & Modi, Baldur, dark elf general, a dragon, 8 valkyries, ancients in addition to the trolls
Jackson Brown
>a kid that manages to not be too hateable
Nah, that little fucker ruins the game.
Jayden Campbell
I really liked the sound effects. You can hear the vibration resonating through the shield when you parry, also that metallic whooshing noise when you heavy-swing your axe. Sony's AAA games generally have awesome sound design, I loved the robot noises from HZD as well
Daniel Flores
Re: the trolls
I wonder if they were supposed to have a bigger role in the story early on in development. In the first gameplay reveal, the troll said something like "No, please, wait!" when Kratos killed him, and it kind of ties into the implications in the Elf world about the Dark Elves not actually being evil.
Jace Lewis
Enemy variety was its weakest point. Other than that really solid game, easy 8 and will gladly play the next part.
Brody Green
you fight one boss three times in DMC5, and it's a different fight every time. The only truly repeated boss is Vergil, and that still has you fight him with two different characters.
Colton Rogers
The old GoW ran out of steam that ascension game is the worst in the series, they did everything they could with greek mythology and the old camera view
Aiden Martinez
I'm not saying there aren't other unique enemies in the game, just that they throw the same things at you over and over again between them.
Daniel Parker
the movement is slow but the blocking is immediate. if kratos would just swing his axe faster and dodge better it would be bearable when playing blind in god of war mode. unfortunately, im totally burned out on the game
Ayden Howard
>God of War >Infamous Second Son >Breath of the Wild >Horizon Zero Dawn >Gravity Rush 2 Had fun with every single one of these. 90% of Yea Forumsermin shitting on games is the work of poor Brazilians who can't afford to play them.
>boss behavior is exactly the same against Nero and Dante >"no no no, can't count this because you can't win the fight" >"V is a different character so reskinned boss don't count" Okay retard....
Jaxson Gray
Every Xbone title is on multiple platforms. The moment I need one I'll add one.
Henry Parker
Second Son can go fuck itself in its faggot ass, but I agree otherwise.
Gabriel Campbell
The story was actually awful, have no idea why it got so much love. Just 'go to mountain, something is in the way, go get something to clear that something', repeat repeat. The characters are simply okay until Atreus suddenly spergs out near the end and ruins any care you have for him. The villain is actually fucking awful.
Combat was better than I was expecting. Not amazing, but good enough to carry the main story.
Jack Nguyen
>playing blind in god of war mode This was your mistake. Just play it on hard mode blind and play NG+ in GMGOW, it's way more fun
Gabriel Gonzalez
God of War mode is pure bullshit to be desu
Benjamin Rodriguez
Atreus acts like any boy would after finding out they're a literal god. First thing he says is "can I fly or turn into an animal?". Of course he gets a little out of hand and has to be given a talking to.
Ayden Smith
Hardest mode is a big waste of potential. With the way combat works, you literally have to go through every single combat encounter in a linear fashion. This means the devs could redesign the enemy group on the higher difficulty to make it truly harder. Instead, all we got was higher damage and super enemy mode.
Noah Campbell
As a Nintendo fan I TOTALLY respect and admire some of Sony's most popluar IPs so I can tell you this game is surprisingly good. Hoping the Ghost of Sparta escapes fate again after seeing the end of it Also yeah Mimir is 400% based
Absolutely this
Lincoln Johnson
That part was fine and cute. The part where he suddenly becomes a murderous psychopath was so forced I was laughing. It came out of nowhere and ended just as abruptly. It was clear they wanted one last little arc with Atreus but ran out of space storywise or development time.
Cooper Stewart
That guy kept talking shit about his mom right to the end and being the spawn of Kratos makes him have some rage problems. He was already acting up before that and got set off.
Angel Rodriguez
>didn't play blind in God of War mode
Colton Reyes
Getting your ass kicked is never fun, GMGOW is only good if you're owning it. But if you are owning it, it's super fun IMO
Thomas Cooper
for that demo they just needed a sort of boss fight to end it on a high
the trolls still have their language and shit, there was something about tyr fucking up their culture so they started killing each other until there were only very few of them left
also, them becoming mini bosses had health bar reasons
Benjamin Smith
I just don't like GMGOW and Master Mode in one very specific area >Dude if you leave this enemy alone for even a second everything goes to hell lmoa Hard mode should be about enemies having improved behavior and attacks and needing to be on top of your game to beat them all. Not babysitting HP sponges from 1st hit till death because they'll refill, or the in the case of god of war, refill AND become stronger.
James Thompson
>pic unrelated
Wyatt Wood
I was pleasently surprised as well but the game isn't the GOAT masterpiece it's said to be.
>The camera is really a hassle and the combat isn't as well thought out as it could. >The story is pretty much non-existent and it's basically a framing device for character development. Character development is surprisingly weak besides some few spots. >more bad walking segments than good ones >The two dwarves are uneeded comedic relief and should be removed from the game >Armor/Crafting system could be removed and have just the buying skills function >timed puzzles are retarded
But other than that, I was really surprised at this. The game is like a modern version of Zelda with the way it's structured and how you go into old temples and tombs and open a lot of fucking chests. The game even had one good walking segment where Kratos was inside the light, it's one of the few times the game achieves the narrative style it wants.
Basically, when the game works, it's fucking amazing. The combat flows well, you're pulling some sick shit, doing quick and satisfying puzzles, raiding tombs and having some nice banter with your boy. For the rest, it's like a chore.
Jose Hill
The fucking dark elf boss fight pissed me off so badly.
You need to get boy to fire arrows at them when they're in the air it stuns them long enough to get some good hits. Upgrading the boy wonder really pays off in general.
That is some peak brainlet interpretation of the story.
Thomas Morgan
>Competent ARPG
The RPG elements were tacked on as hell. NuGoW wasn't as bad as I was expecting and the writing wasn't completely cringy like TLoU but it's far from perfect. Hopefully the next game has some actual enemy variety
Kevin Kelly
It's pretty much the best any western AAA can get in this day and age.
Landon Watson
Nothing is more bullshit than red wulver Miss one backstep and instant death
Connor Powell
None of the God of War games are bad and the only weakest one in the series was Ascencion but since most people never played it let alone most of the games in the series it very commen to see this shit. 4 is on par with 2 and 3 it has some issues but it was never a step down from the series that people only on Yea Forums keep complaining about. It was a Good 9/10
William Miller
Is the Mario one now.
Benjamin Nelson
They got that Dark Souls delay, you have to wait a sec before you dodge or they'll catch you. In my experience doing loops of Niflheim on GMGOW, it's usually the black ones that are a serious problem. They immediately get on all fours and start rushing at you from across the map with that unblockable shoulder bash attack. Other wulvers you have to hurt them and let them morph their claws before they start fighting like that
Game was nothing like they advertised it, it was pretty lighthearted with characters poking at Kratos being so uptight. There were even some good threads about it.
Joshua Miller
Nah, except for one guy everyone agrees that Left Alive and Andromeda are as awful as the critics rate them.
I would say "It's okay if Japan does it", but then again, Left Alive was ripped apart since the Japan release.
Aaron Johnson
dmc5 is a sequel done right, this is not. please stop, the game is a 7 one and done kind of game. I wouldn't ever replay it.
Grayson Hughes
Yea Forums in a nutshell: >Wow that gameplay footage looked like shit! Random Twitch Player just spammed the same moves. Shit game! >game releases with good scores/praise >Haha no the game plays like shit, paid reviews >proceeds to never play the game and decides to chime in with their baseless opinion of a game they didn’t play
Jayden Martin
>blatantly incorrect opinions based on assumptions and fake info >becomes the board's consensus I need to get the fuck off this board
>please stop, the game is a 7 one and done kind of game. I wouldn't ever replay it. So just like DMC5? though I guess you do have to replay it at least once since the """main story""" is about 5 hours
Evan Clark
GoW is a solid game for sure, I think the combat takes about 10 hours to even get decent though. You are so barebones for so fucking long. I would also have liked loadouts or something to swap Relics mid combat. There is like 20-25 of them and you don't get a chance to use gimmick shit because they are just dogshit compared to the handful of good ones
Jayden Hughes
What are objectively the best runic attacks? I don't remember any particular one of them being far superior to the others, except maybe hyperion grapple just because it did so much damage to single targets (then they nerfed it). A couple of them sucked though and would usually get you killed trying them, like that frost beam one
Liam Scott
I really liked the charged up throw runic ability, knocks down Valkyries and gives you invulnerability while your aiming to make sure you get your target and not be hit at the same time. The other one is that Heavy one that is a repeatable smash, good for bosses. The AOE smash you get early on was solid the entire game. I haven't played since launch so I don't even remember most of them.
Christian Wood
>Have any games surprised you for the better lately, Yea Forums? No, because I don't listen to Yea Forums shitposters for opinion but I suspect you weren't surprised and just had to start the thread this way in order to have a discussion. I doubt anyone coming to this place lacks the ability to judge a game from a simple gameplay video. I certainly wasn't surprised by this game and it delivered exactly what I expected. I hope the history will repeat itself and the sequel will be as amazing as GoW 2 was to the first game now that they have the engine and more resources for the actual game.
James Parker
I found the one that drops the axe on the ground and makes a freezing AoE broken as fuck, basically a free safe zone and does quite nice damage. The slashes for the light runic attack are pretty good too. I used the spin a lot as well.
Hudson Robinson
I didn't like those two for GMGOW, especially the repeating smash one. It leaves you so open to being killed as you do it. Neither give you invulnerability, only the shield bash runic attacks can do that. The thrown one would be better if it took less time to regenerate or if it did more damage. For me, the faster and more AOE it was the better. Or if it was just a fast raw damage dealer. The one where you drag your axe on the ground and it sent out ice spikes could do massive damage if it carried the enemy along with the spikes. For the blades, the one where you cross them like you're sharpening knives and blast out that explosion is the best light-attack one IMO. Most of the other light ones lasted too long and if they didn't break an enemy's poise, they would just go full ham on you as you did it.
Jace Bell
>Hoping the Ghost of Sparta escapes fate again after seeing the end of it I think it is a ticket to the Valhalla so that the white spartan can gather the valkyries and then rape the Allfather with an army of his own. They swore allegiance to him after all. I hope Memer is in the sequel as well.
Zachary Mitchell
>anything that has stats is an RPG >only two weapons >terrible enemy variety >mandatory slow sections >obligatory sequel bait >cameraman following Kratos the whole time
Game would be 10x better if they improved and fleshed out GOW3 instead of throwing it away.
Nathan Harris
>the one that drops the axe on the ground and makes a freezing AoE yeah, Ivaldi's Anvil, that one is very effective vs groups. So is this one (webm) for a light runic, I can't remember what it's called though
>Not babysitting HP sponges from 1st hit till death because they'll refill, or the in the case of god of war, refill AND become stronger. This. GMGoW simply is not fun because the enemies are bullet sponges. I would love to custom set enemy hp bars (I'd probably lower them to 50%). Hard is generally a good first time experience but I missed the enemy placements and their extra AI/abilities/leveling up from GMGoW.
Gabriel Sullivan
You really don't need lots of weapons if you have lots of useful moves for the weapons that you do have. The only useless regular move in the game is the aimed R2 whip-slash attack with the blades. I guess you're supposed to use it to set groups on fire as the fight starts, but it's not strong and leaves you quite open until the animation finishes
Leo Smith
if you're good and use the right moves, you can melt through even the spongiest enemies on GMGOW and not even care whether or not they devil-trigger; it's just a slight inconvenience. Like these swirling axe attacks in this webm do as much damage as like 6 normal R1 strikes to each enemy around you for each cycle if you can catch them inside it. Going full ham on one specific somewhat-dazed enemy with the objective of stunning and and insta killing him is also a very effective way to thin the herd, especially since stun grab kills are like special AOE/damage/status attacks to everyone else around. You are also encouraged to get ring-outs wherever you can, or use heavy axe throws to pin enemies to the wall / shatter them for insta-kills that make their sponginess meaningless
The combat is fine but it's nothing to write home about. Altheim and the dark elves are easily the worst garbage in the game. Currently playing through GMGOW, confused why Artreus can tank 4 or 5 mobs at a time since he's invincible.
Sebastian Bailey
Whats so bad about Alfheim? I liked how the lesser elves seemed to be cowardly in their fighting style, trying to keep you away / get at your back and quickly taking turns rushing / poking you if they land a hit and start feeling confident, then the stronger types got progressively more brave. They were also very vulnerable to being stunned, which is always fun
That's all fine but the first 1/3 of the game is not fun on GMGoW because you simply don't have the means to do any of the things you describe. The best difficulty balance was in GoW 2 (titan) which had enemy collision damage with the same modifier as their attack damage (5x in case of titan) and it turned the gameplay into a more varied and strategic experience since you had to weaken an enemy for that sweet throw. Also GoW 4 doesn't have fun bosses outside of optional content. Magni and Modi are bullet sponges that do the same thing for 8 fucking minutes. Compare that to the barbarian king who has 4 or 5 phases and each one takes 1 minute. That 1 minute is enough to prove if you have what it takes to survive the titan difficulty.
Dominic Bailey
>soi of war is an ARPG The genre of the game is action-adventure, fucking sóylent factory
Play on GMGoW. After you get past the opening section and get better skills and equipment the game opens up into an amazingly challenging and rewarding experience.
Dylan Johnson
>That shield smash hitbox was'it always that big? I don't remember't so big
>That's all fine but the first 1/3 of the game is not fun on GMGoW because you simply don't have the means to do any of the things you describe This I do agree with, but you can still do the stun grab / ring-outs and the heavy-axe-throw stuff for insta-kills then. It's just hard to know how to effectively do any of that shit or even that you can do it at all (regarding the axe throw stuff), especially when playing blind. Magni and Modi do actually get more moves with each of their 3 phases, but IMO the stupid checkpoints and cinematics and shit they use to divide up the boss fights in the game make all of the good story bosses much worse. It's far more rewarding to beat a boss in one long try, like with the Valkyries
Yeah fuck that part in particular. Hardest regular encounter in the game, even compared to in NG+ GMGOW where like in this fight ( ) they make every single draugr there have fast-legs, an unblockable lava sword, and an exploding fire jump-attack that shields them from one hit. That stupid "breaking through the wall!" fight on regular GMGOW is still harder
Evan Sullivan
One of my favorite games from last year. The depiction of Yggdrasil was especially cool.
Jose Reed
This makes a lot more sense than I'm comfortable to admit so I'll just call you cringe and bluepilled instead
>I disagree so I'll insult it Very mature Also it's an ARPG in the same way Witcher 3 was, equippable gear that changes playstil, skilltrees and different upgradeable stats.
Landon Johnson
Why can't developers understand that just making the numbers higher for a higher difficulty isn't fun?
Elijah Kelly
>the game opens up into an amazingly challenging and rewarding experience.
How much did you get paid for this post?
Anthony Hughes
Yes. Kratos is a god, he's so fucking strong. Pushing the bridge with zero leverage like he did is equivalent to moving about 1,774,000 tons according to Barlog. I like to think that the only reason he doesn't just uppercut every enemy into orbit in this game is to give Atreus the opportunity for more training, but then again he was just as strong in the other games and had no such reason to hold back
Grayson King
Fact:God of War 1 and 2 are much better games than DMC 1 and 2 while new GoW is worse than DMC5 from a pure gameplay perspective
I thought it was ok. The entire ending sequence got me excited for a sequel.
Hunter Hernandez
>GoW 1 & 2 >Better than DmC 1
Just no.
GoW 2 may be close, but though DmC1 wasn’t as deep as 3 onwards, It was a full action/adventure game in the vein of Ninja Gaiden. The overall game was honestly much better than GoW.
The rest I can agree with.
Andrew Edwards
1 and 2 are both amazing games (2 is my favorite in the franchise) but you forgot Ghost of Sparta which is on par with 2.
It's not the game's fault that you picked easy difficulty.
Landon Smith
I think I can agree on GoW1 not being as good as DMC 1 but I honestly believe the weapon and magic options as well as the combo opportunities in GoW2 are much better and more fun than DMC1, even if they are held back by the restrictive magic meter compared to DT. Yeah GoS and even CoO were fun, but not quite as good as the mainline titles.
Charles Ward
No, it was mash square square triangle. If you didn't do the triangle heavy attacks as combo finishers, the enemies would just attack you through your square light attacks, because the heavies bounced them off the floor like basketballs and kept them under control. GOW1 was all about herding + keeping all the enemies in a big group and bouncing them like that as long as possible, though still a lot of enemies were immune to being bounced. Also he's right, they were both (arguably) better than DMC1 and *definitely* better than DMC2. He never mentioned DMC3, which is where the series really started to get good
Aiden James
Oh, DMC 3 and 4 are much more complex and fun than GoW for sure, But DMC also predates GoW by four years, so it's no wonder it eventually evolved into something better. I guess my point is that with the amount of time Santa Monica had I was hoping for a jump in quality similar from DMC 2 to 3 or 4 to 5. Instead we got stagnation or even a sort of regretion with the new gameplay mechanics.
Camden Gutierrez
It's actually very fun if you git gud. Enemies start to feel like they're made of paper on every other difficulty once you reach that level of skill.
It's neither stagnation nor regression, it's just different. Personally I think the removal of air combos was a good thing because you can just hang in the air and freely juggle an enemy like a sandbag safely out-of-reach to all the ground enemies until you land. No jumping is a loss but I kind of understand why they removed it, as it makes it too easy to reposition and makes all the enemies far less threatening. With the player and all enemies being planted on the same plane, it becomes much more like Chivalry or football or something, with enemies cutting you off and bodyblocking you from quickly repositioning. Jumping over their heads would also make it quite easy to just start slapping them in the back and get fast stun grabs for instant kills; you are supposed to work for those
Jayden Gutierrez
>Yeah GoS and even CoO were fun, but not quite as good as the mainline titles. What? That's very surprising to read. Generally people have either 2 or GoS as their favorite, this is the first time I see somebody say that it wasn't as good as the other games. I agree with CoO being weaker, my personal is: 2 > 1 = GoS > 3 > CoO > Ascension.
David Jackson
Fair point I guess, though I am a bit muffed about the limited options you get compared to a fully kitted Dante in DMC5. I think it's 2>3>GoS>CoO>1>Ascension for me, I just try to block out 1 because of the jumping puzzles
Evan Perry
Objectively the game's biggest flaw. I still found fighting them over and over to be pretty fun though. Hopefully next game they will have much more in that area since they spent a lot of the dev time for this one just making the fundamental stuff
Juan Campbell
I try to block out 3 because it did fuckall with the story and ruined massive potential that was established with 2. The good thing about it is that we will now get that "3" by Barlog and I wonder how much is he going to change his original intentions for Kratos.
Julian Nelson
Why didn't Barlog just make GOW3? It says he worked on it for the first 8 months and then left for some reason
Dylan Phillips
Yeah he did the opening which is also much better than the rest of the game (except arguably some bosses). Directing GoW 2 rekt him (you can see how fucked up he is in the making of GoW 2 documentary) and he needed a time for himself and for something fresh (he also worked on 1 together with Jaffe).
