It's good when it's done well. The problem is it can often be summarised as

>Do abusable and repeatable actions that character likes
>Wow I love you, user!

Characters are usually never aware of what public fuckery they'd disagree with that you've done when they weren't with you, despite the world making it apparently obvious that the whole world knows. You can also subvert negative reactions by just abusing likeable actions.

Sounds like you're describing F4 companion system.
But what about romance like Witcher 3 where it's shaped by key decision you can't abuse?

it also is written well because characters got a very long backstory, good romance comes down to "written well" too bad writing in RPGs is in decline again

Sure? Not a fan of it personally but I think romance in games or stories is always more believable than real life where everything is just random so it feels more engaging.
