I took it seriously from 06 to 08. After that I forgot about it for a while then it came back as a meme. Now I don't know what to believe.

I stopped waiting when Valve announced L4D2

as long as it's hasn't been cancelled officially it could still happen, even 20 years later, maybe they want to make a game that would be revolutionary and the hardware still isn't good enough

Problem is that everybody was hoping it would happen with Source 2 but we got nothing. There's all their VR projects but it'd be corporate suicide for them to release Half-Life on such a niche platform. Valve will probably never satisfied with new hardware and will just procrastinate on it until hell freezes over.

Play it on hard. Also play Black Mesa instead as there's no reason not to with you having no nostalgia.

Both half life games were tech demos for new engines.
We're not getting hl3 until we eat least have Source Engine 3 with some fancy new revolutionary gfx tech.
And considering that hardware and gfx have been basically the same since 2012, were gonna be here a while.
We're in an era where game devs would rather shit out an unoptimized piece of shit that looks like a phone game instead.

As long as Valve continues to exist without finishing the story it can be presumed to be in some low level of development. It seems likely they've developed several different iterations of 'what HL3 could be', but never managed to ship any due to internal process/politics problems.
