steam stores some data locally on your machine which includes things like

>more

steam ALSO has an API for third party companies to find out a steam users friendslist, steam explicitly also says that the local data is not intended for use by anything other than steam.

Epic thinks they're important enough to NOT use the api, citing "muh security flaws" and decides to scrape fucking all of it without telling you.

That's just a normal thing for companies and the government to do in China, it's just a part of their culture.
