Because vampires in Fledgling aren't human beings. They're a cousin species of unknown origin called Ina, who from Europe and the Middle East. They can't convert human beings into vampires.
One family of Ina works on genetic engineering with their human companions, and eventually they produce some dark skinned vampires that don't conk out the moment the sun comes up, and take longer to burn in the sun. However, racist vampires take offense to A: mixing genetically with humans, and B: mixing genetically with fucking niggers. They proceed to kill the entire family with the exception of the protagonist, who escapes to a cave and wakes up amnesiac on account of massive head injuries and burns and shit.
It's a really good novel. A shame the author died a year after it was published. We might have gotten a sequel. Octavia Butler wrote some amazing stuff, and died too soon.

I get that the pronoun could affect how NPC talk to your character but what could me make I a hundred years old vampire give a shit about how you want me to address you?
