On one hand all this stuff hasn't been explained in the anime yet and this is what I've read in the threads from people who have actually read the LN/manga, but it really annoys me how obviously people just want to talk bullshit about the show for the sake of it

Ignore the hype, you'll end up disappointed.
The books start with MC's merry band of bandits raping several underage girls after having massacred their whole village. After, things get worse before they get better. The edge is real, and you can feel its full brunt due to the first-person narration of 13yo Dark Flame Master himself.
That said, the prose is incredibly readable, MC's platitudes and bravado are genuinely entertaining, and the world remains intriguing throughout. The second book's plot is amazingly put together and I can't believe he actually pulled it off. The conclusion to the series is satisfactory, I'd say.
Try to read the first book, it's really short and if you end up liking it even a little, keep reading on.
The Prince of Fools trilogy is set on the same world but I read that book first and it doesn't do a great job of establishing the world, even if the main cast is a lot more agreeable.

As a manga reader, that part made sense, and was really engaging watching him try to underdog despite his significant lack of skill, and with the impending times when he would be forced to team up with the other heroes.

Coincidentally I'm one of the few that have played it. It has RPG-like stats but isn't an RPG at all. I'd compare it more to a tower defense or maybe RTS. You build up a little town, usually with some AI townspeople to help, and then either defend against waves of enemies or go to war with other towns depending on what mode you're playing. I found the defense mode to be quite fun, but the war mode is kind of annoying in multiplayer because your characters are persistent and there's no level cap so some people are insanely powerful. As the host you have the ability to kick people, but it's kind of a downer.

Yeah, not all isekai properties are gutless trash like you/ some other user implied. Naofumi leaves behind dozens, if not hundreds of children, many of them with squirrel girl, so I'm glad she didn't stay a permaloli.

Despite the barely mediocre writing there's something really fun and satisfying about the show. I still wish the other heroes got some more depth, there's always hints of it but then they just go back to being dumb assholes again.
Like how sword-guy, who seemed like the token edgelord loner, is actually the one who's the most open-minded towards shield. Or bow suprisingly enough being kind of a cunt despite seeming the nicest at first. Or Lance doubling down on everything despite not necessarily being evil.
Feels like they could do a lot with it but at the end of every episode they just serve as the idiots for Shield to look better in comparison. I really wish he'd bro up with Sword at least

Sword, in the novels, is depicted as a very insecure faggot who literally doesn't know how to make friends. He's Kirito except portrayed honestly, in that he's completely anti-social without even necessarily meaning to be, because he's socially retarded, and he knows that, so he masks it by pretending to be an edgelord solo-only kind of 'player', since he constantly thinks of the world as a video game. So, him grouping with Naofumi wouldn't make the most sense for him since he doesn't even know how to deal with basic people, let alone someone with as much baggage and as many trust issues as Naofumi.

Bowfag shota is just a purityfag idealist who sees the world in black and white and assumed the woman was telling the truth, then he never got over it. He desperately wants to play the role of a true protagonist, not some anithero or anything like that, and it clouds his judgement hard.

Spear is just a womanizing retard douche who's kind of into games but he's mostly just a jock, and he died to wind up being reincarnated by the hero-summoning spell after being stabbed by a woman he was cheating on in the real world.

Sword's the only truly decent person amongst the lot but he's on the autism spectrum in a very real way.

To be honest most of that is the writing's fault too. I mean do they even explain the bullshit reason the heroes can't be in the same group? All we get is a "oh it can't be done so let's not do it" in the anime. It makes no sense tho since in the waves they will be fighting together anyways.

Apparently, hero powers reduce XP gain when acting in concert. For the best effect, the heroes need to split up and train their own teams.

And yet, they get tons of time to grind out of waves, not mentioning the fact that the waves themselves are a huge grindfest.

Generally it's just a prophecy that their personalities clash so violently on average that it's better for them to just make their own groups. That's not a good explanation, but hey, with how Naofumi is with Spearfag and Bowfag, it seems right most of the time.

Waves are more like raids. That's why it's important for the heroes to train with their own groups between them, without taking the XP penalty - otherwise, they won't have the levels / skills / special gear unlocks to beat the bosses. Of course, the heroes who aren't the main character have consistently failed to do that despite working on their own, so the logic for continuing to do so hasn't really held up.

I agree with this, but at the same time Naofumi seems like the kind of guy that would happily accept pussy being thrown at him upon getting a magical power-boost. He isn't some purity dude who would stick to just one person in such a scenario. It's more honest and realistic than it would be if they tried to write him that way, because it just wouldn't fit his personality well.

Either way, he focuses 90% of his time on Raphtalia. The others are just his dick-warming nut-dump baby-ovens on the side.
