The economics don't favor Epic. Traditionally we have only Sony and Microsoft that take huge financial chances and eat losses. Why? Because both rake in billions without videogames. Nintendo can't afford a $500 million loss (don't fucking bring up cash on hand, all that shows is they have nothing in heavy R&D) and we hate EA and Activision for killing games over poor sales. Epic doesn't have another revenue stream. Fortnite isn't going to rake it in forever.

That's not to say Steam can do it either. They are better positioned but again, they are a vertical as fuck system. If the one thing they do doesn't turn a profit they're fucked. Microsoft has probably never made a penny on hardware and less than any competitor on software. Doesn't matter. MS actually needs losses to ensure lower taxes, so they pump money in games knowing it can be written off and the amount is irrelevant because Office alone would cover operating expenses for the entire company. Add Windows and they could pay us for games and not feel it.

Point is Epic right now is relying on heavy investment to expand quickly before Steam can respond. It's a good idea as long as the investors stick it out.

This is called doing business. $5 million is pocket change for them but for the indie devs getting $30k each for their project is a massive boost.
If even a few of those projects turn out to be huge hits it's great promotion for Epic's engine. And Epic will eventually get their cut from engine licensing cuts even when there are no up-front costs.

It's not even really about benevolence. Communism as described is a stateless, moneyless, classless society. It's an ~anarchical direct democracy where people make the decisions directly instead of electing someone to make them.
The problem is that most people have no clue how to run a country. This is somewhat a problem in some representative democracies as well because people good at winning popularity contests are necessarily good at running the country. But in a lot of them the popularity contest winners then delegate all their jobs to semi-competent experts and the country is actually run by unelected nobodies.

Current late-stage capitalism would work just fine for that if tweaked a bit. Implement UBI high enough that anyone can live somewhat comfortably without working and let corporations do almost whatever the fuck they want. They can run eachother into the ground for all you care, they're only "employing" robots anyway. As long as your total tax revenue is stable enough to pay your citizens to live while doing nothing there's no problem.
And this type of society produces a great amount of the perfect type of consumer and corporations would probably be happy paying a bit more to take care of the people in exchange for nearly total market freedom.
