I legitimately don't understand what anyone's problem with this is. In the past examples I can understand it feels like a bait and switch, since they backed for a Steam key, and were instead given an Epic one. But with this it's literally just saying it's going to come out on another launcher. Everyone's complaining about the "balkanization" of the PC market and exclusivity as if the requirement isn't as simple as taking 5minutes to download another launcher and get the game.

Steam is shitty DRM just the same, we've hated on Steam for years now. Seeing so many people upset that someone's fucking Steam over is just baffling to me.

Steam is a convenient and established ecosystem for games and game releases where you can get all the information you need on the state of the game you are interested in purchasing. You have a community with an established ruling on refunds for games you buy that you would like your money back on for various reasons, whereas Epic games store is the opposite of that and there are many cases of people not being able to get a refund that would be legitimate on the steam store.

And if you think it is okay for a game store that takes your credit card information for game purchases to spy on your browser and local files, a game store is practically owned by the chinese government, than you are far gone from being reasoned with

Plus I have hundreds of really good games in my backlog on steam/3ds/vita/ps4 not to mention emu stuff.
And if they did get a game I'm interested in as an exclusive, then I would just be put off of the game. Its not like I'm dying to add something else to the backlog.

Obsidian didn't make one good game since New Vegas.

Avellone was treated unfairly due to office politics and the really bad practice of having spouses as HR and leadership, which means there's a big conflict of interest waiting to happen, which leads to drama and office politics. I am thinking that if the Microsoft deal happened before Avellone quit the situation would have been handled much better due to less financial stress etc.

Still, I have faith in the development side of Obsidian, especially Tim Cain.

No it wasn't. KoTOR 2 shipped unfinished, Alpha Protocol was a broken mess that was borderline unplayable. Neverwinter Nights 2 is a hot mess and a nightmare to play. The only reason why anyone should play their games is because they were daring and tried something new. Not the case anymore.

Stick of Truth was garbage from the game point of view. Brainded JRPG, even for a JRPG. The only saving grace was having South Park writers make the entire game. And even with that it was mediocre.
PoE is not good. It's the very game that made me hate Obsidian even before they've fucked wit Avellone. Easily one of the most mediocre RPG's out there. Generic, boring, by-the book fantasy adventure. Almost everything about the game was a letdown: locations, quests, combat system, items, character development, plot, worldbuilding etc. The only memorable thing about the entire game were 2 companions written by Avellone, one of which was shit. PoE is literally the anti-thesis of anything Obsidian had done before.
And when I see Outer Worlds I see Pillars of Eternity 2.0: a safe game for everyone to enjoy with boomer "cult" dev attached to make it look like it's something more.

I actually liked that game. Avellone really did show his talents as a writer (I'm perplexed he doesen't write straight up novels) and gave playing the light side weight and meaning. How? By making it a form of rebellion against your master who tried proselytizing you to her philosophy which ran counter to everything the Jedi stood for. Not only that, but it did indeed show a galaxy torn apart by the never ending wars between the Jedi and Sith (and, before them, Spess Mongols).

So when you strove to do good, you both had purpose and meaning in the plot. By striving to make the galaxy a better place, you both prove Avellone/Kreia wrong and give the Jedi meaning in spite of the troublesome parts of SW. That's how you deconstruct something, that's how you breathe life into a dead franchise, not Disney's 'subverting our expectations' line of bullshit. That being said, the game was buggy as shit and half the game was missing.

Since it was Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, who made Fallout, probably? Them not remembering how to super optimally play a game they made 22 years ago (but instead remembering a lot more pertinent details about the design and development decisions, which makes sense as they *made the game* but didn't necessarily play it recently) doesn't really detract from that. I've replayed Fallout 1 and 2 many times so I am very used to the interface and controls, but that doesn't go for everyone.

People argue that a game being literally bought off to stay off a platform is not coming from a place of good will on a morale compass. Not to mention it is coming to a platform that is striving to be as anti-consumer as possible in as few features as possible. On top of that, information in relation to success is hidden away and comes off as a marketing tactic. Publishers are making money off the supposed costs to be on the store. On top of that, while complaining about letting the shit gates open on Steam, Epic has not approached upon any solution to expand its store. The rate of games being added to it is slow, which hey, if you're fine with, then that's great. Finally, its coming to the Windows store despite everything, which is easily considered the worst platform of them all, but not Steam.
