Sorry user. At first I thought the game would be just a cash grab with gacha shit, but playing with your friends and getting to know new people again is very nice. In 2000, I returned to my hometown for the summer (my family moved across the country due to work) and went to my friend's house. I spent the night and woke up to see him playing Ragnarok. I saw other players also playing in the same world. An online RPG where you can co-op, chat with friends? The possibilities seemed endless.

At that time, Ragnarok was in alpha. The only hats were the pink hat, some cat ears, and maybe the bunny ears? No 'quests', only grinding.

I continued to play online with my friend for years. I met many people in the game including a girl that ended up becoming a long distance relationship. I didn't know what she looked like until a year after we met because webcams were not as big yet and we had to use MSN messenger to take advantage of it.

I probably played every day up until PVP was introduced. A truly magical time. Remember those "rollbacks"? A friend of mine got a Baphomet card and it was rolled back and he shrugged it off. I would've flipped shit.

Anyway, nostalgia is intensely strong for this game. The music can make me cry.

i miss the scouring of all the merchants if you were looking for something. felt much more personal and rewarding to find that deal than just going to an auction house, typing in what you want, and buy it. its just robotic.

I've been thinking about it and I think you may be using the wrong words.
We became adults, we learnt how these games work, we memorized game loops and tropes, we lack the ignorance we had as kids, the wonder of discovery isn't that easy to achieve for us now as we can take a fairly accurate guess to what we'll get due to our experience.
This is why I find it hard to return to MU, the wonder of what would come next became extinct once I got there, thus the same experience can't be reachieved.
Our inner adventurous mind is craving something beyond all that, but god help us as we may never figure out what we're actually craving for until we find it

I mean, my own experience was only fiddling with RPG Maker 2k3 and XP back in the days as well as writing innumerous design documents for dream games but why the fuck not?

There was a command to search the item you were looking for in all the merchants stock in the map, dont know if it was an external add-on but i know i used it a couple times

Fuck I remember getting out the tutorial and then being asked by a literally who to help him out with the next quest. We were both legitimately new at the game. We acquired 2 party members later on, who were each playing solo. No smurfs and we were (presumably) retarded kids who didn't know how to Google or use gamefaqs. Figured everything out through the game and talking with other players. Our schedules seemed to align and we played everyday after school. Playing Ragnarok was the shit and I made some great memories. Then life happened and I stopped playing less and less. Same thing happened to them. I wish I asked them about other contact info outside of the game, we communicated solely through text (this was around early to mid 2000s). Anime like Log Horizon really brought that feeling back.
